I give ginger grass 5 stars for a number of reasons. We used to order food from ginger grass for out student council meetings. I have literally eaten everything on their menu and it is ALLDELICIOUS. Service is always prompt and quick for both dine in and take out(even if I ordered over 200 $ worth of food it never took more than 20 – 25 minutes which is impressive). Everyone is always SO friendly especially the owner /manager — very sweet lady and she really makes you feel like you’re at home. Great place for Thai /Vietnamese food in halifax.

Serisouly one of the best, if not the best, thaï in town. If you dont like spicey food dont forget to ask«no spice» when you order your dish because it will be still well seasoned and very tasty. Otherwhise it can be too, hot for you Price are very fair too. Recommended!

Was there is past Saturday, food was excellent and prompt and service despite the host saying they were short staffed due to the waitresses pipes bursting was a reasonable wait time for a very busy Saturday evening.

Great food but make sure you have a lot of water, even mild spice was way too hot for me. Was an overall great experience to be there

Was in Halifax visiting in October 2012(my former home), and needed somewhere good to go for lunch with some ladies. I did a simple down town google search, read this, it sounded good, so we tried it. It helped that it was at the intersection of Morris St, so we knew parking would be much easier than ‘downtown’ per se. Small, casual atmosphere, with a few Asian touches. Maybe a dozen tables that I could see? Bright from windows on both sides. Standard, simple service. Typical fried veggie spring rolls. Delicious though, as I find they are at most places. Excellent tofu basil noodle entrée.(NT3) Big enough portion that I was full, but not bursting at the seams. I wish I could remember what the others ordered, but both were satisfied if that means anything. A three-year-old at the table asked for plain noodles, and they obliged, so thumb’s up to that obviously. Next visit: Mar 2015. Mild, overcast lunch in March. Same decent veggie spring rolls, but they looked like they had chicken in them when I bit into it. I didn’t actually taste chicken, so let it go. I had not realized I already reviewed this place from the visit mentioned above, so ordered the exact same dish this time as last, without remembering what I’d had that time. It was just as good. The friend today had the curry chicken and commented that she did enjoy. The place was full upon arrival at 12:30, with us getting the last table, but it cleared mostly out within the hour. Definitely I would go back and most likely try the pad thai next time, but I think especially if I lived in the neighborhood, this would become a regular take-out joint for me.

This place is dynamite! I haven’t been taken by a restaurant in a while. I am, for the most part, a pretty meat and potatoes type guy. Meaning that I don’t typically step out of my comfort zone and try restaurants that I am not familiar with. That said i do enjoy a wide range of food at home etc. The service was pleasent and friendly and the food came quick. The place was seemingly at capacity so this was worth mentioning for sure. The food was not only delicious it was perfectly heated and fresh. I had the Cashew Chicken, medium heat. I like spicy food and would more then likely step up the heat next time. My friend got the Pad Thai and seemed to have no issue as he ate everything and also enjoyed his. I highly reccomend this place and will 100% be returning!

This was like being in a Vietnamese family for a few moments the food was hot and had a lot hart in the preparation of it. The service was friendly and quick. The phở was delicious.

This place is awesome. The owners are really friendly and take pride in their business. Every time you spend $ 10 before tax you get to put your name in a weekly draw for a $ 25 gift certificate. They keep the 52 winners’ names throughout the year and do a second draw for a trip to Thailand or Vietnam. They’ve been doing this for 4 years now. It’s pretty amazing if you ask me. As for the food. It’s just as awesome. Everything tastes totally fresh and there’s no shortage of menu items to choose from. There’s something for every type of diet, which is important to me as a vegetarian. For every reason in the book I recommend you give this place a try. Great service? Check. Great food? Check? Great prices? Check? Friendly environment? Check? Chance to win free food and trips? Check.

Gingergrass tends to be my go to place when dining solo on a break from work, and I always end up ordering the same thing. This time, I took three longshoremen with me and they were clearly uncomfortable with the myriad of choices avail on the menu. Usually the meat and potato crowd, I explained the intracies of the flavours and the cuisine. Each one of us tried a different lunch combo, and they were easily won over. I usually go for the Chicken Phở, but this time tried the Beef. I am a huge fan of the broth, and the beef gave it a different flavour. I am glad I tried it, but will stay with the chicken from here on out. I also ordered some crab rangoons which were fabulous. They were hot, perfectly filled, and the thai dipping sauce was a wonderful addtion to the sweetness of the crab and green onion. I really like the owner here– she is engaged and hands on. They were drawing for a trip to Thailand and it was nice that she thanked me for continuing to support her business. This is a super touch, and I will keep coming here as long as they continue the high quality of food and service I recieve here. If she can leave four longshoremen smiling and content, they are doing something right here.

I love this little spot on the corner of Barrington and Morris St. Every time I go I leave with a big smile on my face:) Their spring rolls are absolutely to die for and they offer 2 fried options(meat and veggie) and a fresh option. They also have great lunch specials on every day for between $ 7.50 to $ 8.50; a great mixture of curries, Phở, Baan Mhi, etc. Their Phở is also one of my favorites. Their broth is nice and rich, comes with a good amount of beef and sprouts and is always sure to warm you up on a cold winter day. Whether you’re looking for a great spot for lunch, a date or some take out, I definitely suggest you check this place out!

Gingergrass was one of those places that for years I often walked past and thought«Hey, I should try this place sometime!». Well, it’s turns out that«sometime» was years later in January 2013. Go figure. Looking for a quick-ish lunch nearby both my apartment and my girlfriend’s campus, Gingergrass reared its Thai/Vietnamese head as the obvious choice. It was a slushy weekday, but there was a respectable lunch time crowd in the restaurant, although not so much that we had to wait for a table, being sat in the back area. Our server was friendly and quite helpful with showing my girlfriend which dishes didn’t have seafood in them and therefore wouldn’t cause any awkward scenes of anaphylactic shock. We stuck with the lunch specials as they had a nice diversity and the prices couldn’t be beat — daily and weekday specials all under $ 9? Yes please. Being in this Vietnamese place for the first time I figured I had to try the phở, while my other half went for the chicken coconut soup. During the short wait for our food we chatted and enjoyed the modestly decorated room, that even on a grey day had plenty of light coming in through the windows that comprise half of the place. The phở arrived in a good sized bowl; big enough to make for a filling soup-only meal, but not so gargantuan that I would be bloated with broth and beef for the rest of the day. The slices of beef were tender and there was added flavour and crunch from my beloved bean sprouts, while there was just enough cilantro to add some depth to the dish, but not smack you in the face with its fresh zip. The broth was a little lacking on its own, but stirring in the hoisin and chile sauce they give you stepped it up a notch, adding some sweetness and a kick of spice. Stealing a couple spoonfuls of my girlfriend’s coconut soup were enough to convince me that she had made the better choice, with a smooth, slightly coconutty base, with tender bits of chicken and vegetables, along with a mound of jasmine rice and a spring roll. All in all it was a solid meal and I decided that this would be a good lunch spot for work days, with my office just a couple blocks down the street. The following week I put my plan into action on one of my day shifts. Unfortunately, when I called to try and place an order ahead of time there was no answer, just a message about their hours and voice mail, so my co-worker and I had to wait while our orders were prepared. Being that I was not even halfway through a twelve hour shift, I chose to be a bit of a piggy and ordered two lunches, one for now, and another for later. For my Asian gluttony I chose the banh mi and wonton soup special, as well as the yellow curry chicken. There was a bit of a wait, but fortunately we weren’t on a tight timeline and were just going to eat at our desks anyway. Once back at the office, I settled in and chose to eat the banh mi and soup first as the chicken and rice would likely reheat better later on, compared to a soggy sandwich. The bread was good, with a slightly crusty outside and dense but soft inside that supported the fillings nicely. Alas though, this sandwich has helped me decide that I’m not a huge fan of banh mis. I’m just not a pickled daikon fan, and the cilantro doesn’t help either. It seems that banh mis just aren’t for me. The wonton soup however was really good, with soft, juicy pork wontons in a broth that was just salty enough without being overwhelming. The yellow curry I ended up saving until my shift the following night, but it lasted surprisingly well. The container was full with a ton of rice, and the chicken was still tender and juicy even after a run through the microwave. The yellow curry was flavourful and pleasantly spicy, without me feeling like my face was going to melt off ala Raiders of the Lost Ark. After making a couple trips to Gingergrass, it’s good to know of another solid dining option within a quick walk from both my home and my office, and I’m looking forward to diving further into the menu… just not into any banh mis.

I hate to give a local business such a low rating, especially when I had such high hopes for this place. You see, it is just a few minutes from my place of employment, and as soon as I found out it was there, I envisioned myself popping over there on my lunch break to pick up a quick green curry and then racing back with wings on my shoes and a theme song in the background. Because Thai food makes all days better. Unfortunately, my first(and only) experience there was such that I would never return. I went there for dinner, and ordered a combo with a green curry and a spring roll, and then had Mango with Coconut Sticky Rice for dessert. The curry was not nearly hot enough — granted, I am used to knock-your-socks-off green curries, but this one was church-potluck calibre: not even hot enough to make an elderly person sweat, much less have a heart attack.(Not that I would ever want anybody to have a heart attack, or course, but the point is that I can take the heat. .. barely.) I remembered too late that the waitress did not even ask me about the level of spice I would prefer, which is a pretty big oversight in a Thai restaurant. The spring roll was soggy, and the rice tasted as though it came straight from the bottom of the pot, so congealed it all was. The whole meal tasted like it had been microwaved, which is fine when I am dining chez moi, but not so great when I am paying to go out. To make things worse, I was still quite hungry after finishing my meal. I cannot remember the last time this has happened to me at any kind of dining establishment, and I’m not a big girl. Those portion sizes were small. The coconut sticky rice was good, and the reason for the second star, but still overpriced. In fact, the whole meal was overpriced. I would not go back again, nor would I ever recommend it to anybody who asks me about the finer eating establishments in the area(and I have to answer this question a lot, working in tourism as I do!)

Am I missing something? It seems everyone I know loves Gingergrass but after several visits now I think it falls below-par. Hubby and I went for a quick bite last week(evening service) and ordered the fishcakes to start. I confess I’m a bit of a fishcake hussy and the menu description of these sounded pretty lusty. Sadly, the anticipated spicy-fishcake orgy was the culinary equivalent of an awkward teenage fumble. Six sad little discs pressed almost flat with a horrible rubbery texture and an overwhelming blast of lime leaves that left any other taste dead in the water. Even worse was the(egg?) coating, the texture of which can best be described as ‘squeaky’(as in, it almost squeaked against the teeth). The dipping sauce was tasty enough, but it was runny and vinegar-based and I was expecting a rich, gloopy sweet chilli-type consistency. One of the worst appies I’ve ever had that wasn’t from Maxwell’s Plum… On to the mains. I ordered the green curry with a deep-fried spring roll. I actually wanted a fresh roll but it was an extra $ 3(!). It’s only $ 5.95 for TWO if you order them off the menu! I am not cheap, but I absolutely hate it when restos impose ridiculous surcharges for minor menu substitutions so I refuse to do it on principle. Anyway, the fried roll was actually very good, with a lovely combo of savoury pork and mung bean paste. My curry was… OK. I certainly didn’t dislike it, but it lacked the depth of flavour I like in a green curry. The chicken was overcooked.(NB: one of the best green currys in the city can be found on the lunch menu of Fid Resto). Rounded out with some basic veggies and steamed rice, it was an adequate but underwhelming meal. Hubby had the chicken peanut curry, which looked pretty creamy and indulgent. He was happy enough, but I tried it and again found the flavour to be flat. Coconut milk laced with red curry paste and peanuts — all the elements were there but it didn’t hang together all that well, IMHO. I’ll probably go back, to be honest, because it’s not badly priced and it’s convenient for my place. If anyone has any recommendations that might turn my thoughts around, I’d love to hear them.

So as not to be bogged down by reviews here in Calgary, thought I would weigh in on some favourite eats across the country… well at least a throw-back to the East Coast. Especially since the culture for Thai food is yet to be found here. No offence. We have tried many spots. Thai Chili Club is the running leader so far. But that being said, looking for authentic Thai in Halifax? Head down Barrington, away from all the shops and the closed-up buildings. Yeah that way. Toward the water. Follow the graveyard and make sure it is on your right. Now stop at the traffic lights. Look to your right across the street. There it is: Gingergrass. Love. Love. Love this place. Loves it as we say in Newfoundland. Loves the owner. Loves the location. Don’t loves… love the small eating quarters. But loves everything else. Best pad Thai I have ever had — not including the time I had it @ Wreck Beach in Vancouver. Served by a Thai in nothing but a fanny pack. Hygiene aside that was the best Thai food ever. But Gingergrass is sick. In a good way. Owner talks to you. Takes your order. Serves it. Want some Thai? Get it. Got it? Good.

I am not a fan of Asian food in general(outside of egg rolls, so long as they aren’t mostly cabbage). I do enjoy stir-frys, however, so when I saw stir-fry-type items on their online menu, I agreed to accompany my friend there. Gingergrass is very small, clean and tidy. I had a good experience during both visits, with generous portions and reasonable prices. I had the chicken lemongrass on both visits and my friends had various curry dishes. All were happy with our meals. The only downside: mega-long waits for taking our plates and giving us the bill. My first visit the place was quite busy so I tried to understand when the server we flagged down said we’d have to go to the counter for our bill.(O rly?) The second visit, there was exactly one other couple in the restaurant. It still took the server an unusually long time to clear our plates and present us with the bill. If they cut down on the wait times this would be a four-star rating rather than three.

This is a cute spot. Definitely my go-to Viet/Thai place in HFX. As Joseph H. mentions, they’ve got some good lunch specials — different colors on different days. Usually they come with a spring roll, some jasmine rice, and a cucumber salad. The lady who owns it is always there and very friendly — I’ve been checking in since they first opened a few years back and have always had prompt, smiling service. Recently, I’ve gone outside of the green curry standard and tried some of the vermicelli with grilled pork. It was passable — but the pork was a little too greasy and the spring roll was a little too not greasy enough. It was good though– I’ll just be sticking with the thai thai thai stuff. The summer is especially nice @ Gingergrass — the manager lady makes a fake patio with a bunch of plants as a wall on the sidewalk. Smells great. Much better value proposition than Talay Thai up the street.
