Morris East

I’ve always wanted to go to Morris East and I’ve finally went for my birthday this year! Morris East definitely lived up to its expectations and I’m excited to return to try more items from the menu. The food was delicious, the service was decent, and the ambience was great!
For food, two of us ordered the Mexi Layer Dip to share and my other friend ordered the Chips ‘N’ Dip for herself as starters. For our main meals, we ordered the daily soup, the Mushroom pizza, and the Spicy Pepperoni pizza. The Mexi Layer Dip was basically flatbread with a bean/​sour cream dip. It was considerably tasty and a good choice for bean lovers (like myself!). The Chips ‘N’ Dip appetizer however, was not quite as good. It is definitely not an appetizer to share as it was quite small and the dipping sauce, a lemon caper sour cream, tasted a lot like moisturizer. Although, the Chips ‘N’ Dip was half the price as the Mexi Layer Dip and the chips were similar to the kettle chips served at Tim Hortons (which are so good). For our main meals, I ordered the Mushroom pizza for myself. The pizza was delicious however, the mushrooms made the pizza a bit sickening. It was overloaded with three different types of mushrooms, and it was difficult for me to eat, even though I love mushrooms. I added banana peppers to mine, but next time I would probably add some type of meat. The crust was also covered in flour and it sometimes affected the taste of the pizza itself. My friends ordered the soup of the day and the Spicy Pepperoni pizza for themselves. The soup, which was a black bean purée had an odd taste to it. I can’t describe it, but it was unpleasant. However, the texture was perfect and there was quite a bit in the bowl. The Spicy Pepperoni pizza on the other hand was quite spicy. The mixture of pepperoni and banana peppers made it difficult for people who can’t handle highly spicy foods. Finally, the price for their food was pushing it a bit. Their pizzas ranged from $ 15 — $ 19 while additional toppings were $ 1.50 for veggies and $ 2.50 (!!!) for meat. Overall, the food was great. It was enough to fill me up and have leftovers as well!
Additionally, the service at Morris East was decent. The servers were generally friendly. However, our server in particular. She was a bit snobby and clearly did not want to serve us. On a positive note, she didn’t harass us on our outing and she was quick and polite. The service didn’t affect my experience at all.
Lastly, the ambience of Morris East is like a clash of class and casual. This made me feel much more comfortable. The environment and customers were mostly classy (as well as snobby!) while the dress code, soundtrack, etc were all casual. It has a great atmosphere and I definitely want to return for a second time!
Verdict: Good place for small groups and people who love pizza.

I loved my glass of wine, but my pizza fell apart as soon as I picked it up. it was very difficult to eat.

Came here with my crew for brunch after reading the fab reviews on it. And I’m glad we did! The food was delicious, portion sizes were perfect and the flavours stood out!
They use local produce which is fresh and natural.
The sausage is gluten free without fillers and the earl grey tea was loose leaf from a local tea shop, and it tasted so smooth and strong!
Our server is super friendly and has a contagious positive attitude with a beautiful smile.
The décor is simple and funky, comfortable and open.
I’d highly recommend this place!
So I came back for lunch before I left Halifax and they have an excellent GF crust for their pizza. Throughly enjoyed my lunch.

This place is delicious and the service is awesome. I definitely recommend coming here with a date or family for dinner. My favorites are the mushroom pizza, margarita pizza, mexi dip, and salted caramel tart!

This place is a must! One of the best dinners we had while in Halifax. A friend suggested it and we were not disappointed. The pizzas are as good as any. There Caesar salad with sour dough croutons was excellent.

Tiny only describes floorspace. We ordered the calamari and mushroom pizza with sausage — both were great. Dessert was the highlight though! Don’t miss the Etons Mess — whipped cream, meringue and fresh berries. Nice evening made better by Cynthia, the friendliest server ever.

Morris East is always a five-​star pizza experience in my books: thin, crispy wood-​fired crust, fresh creative toppings — so hard to choose (…blue cheese or peach? Why not one of each and take the rest home?!) Top off that beautiful ‘Za with a drizzle of the house-​made chili oil and you, my friend, have just tasted a little bite of heaven.
This past Sunday was a hot day, so we sat outside in the sun lingering over refreshing glasses of rhubarb sangria — HOLY YUM!
And a huge thank you to our knowledgeable server who not only recommended the Caesar salad but assured us the Morris East twist on this classic menu item would heal the lingering scars of the heavy cream dressing, wilty-​leaved renditions we’ve come to know and loath. This lemony vinaigrette version, with light crispy croutons and large Parm shavings was not so garlicky that you’d be afraid to speak to someone after. Absolutely Outstanding! New fans of that salad for sure!

Great food, though chicken sticks starter was a bit tough, pizza’s were terrific. Both caramel and s’moor desserts were great.
Jeremy, our waiter, was very kind and warm. He specifically requested a mention ‘to show his boss that he’s awesome, he needs to know that’. Therefore… here ya go Jeremy! ;)

Good little spot.
Food (2.25÷3 stars) A delicious variety of Pizza’s that have some great ingredients. Pizza’s best friend (salads) we’re a bit disappointing (lack of dressing, mostly lettuce). And the homemade ice cream wasn’t any better than store bought. I definitely recommend ordering pizza.
Atmosphere = (¹⁄₁ star) A pretty cool little spot which makes the most of it’s space. Great for dates or small getaways.
Service (¹⁄₁ star) Friendly, helpful and outgoing. Makes me feel welcome.

Dined here with friends on a Friday evening. I chose from the selections that were featured as part of their Dine Around special. $ 29 dollars for app, entrée & dessert. I opted for the Caesar salad, Lamb gnocchi & sundae.
The salad lacked enough dressing but was otherwise presentable. The gnocchi was the biggest disappointment. There was no sauce at all served in this version of fried gnocchi with pulled pork style lamb bits. I’ve had many different versions of gnocchi but never without some kind of sauce (cream, tomato, etc.) It lacked any kind of flavour and was very firm. The sundae was a welcome delight but anything with sugar is usually tasty.
I’ve been here a couple of times before with mixed results… don’t know when I’ll go back.

I am a big fan of the Morris East on Larry Uteck (been there at least half a dozen times), so figured the downtown Halifax location would be the same. It’s much smaller, but other than that, just as good. Ten tables in total? Similar atmosphere with simple modern décor (some ‘cartoony’ city artwork, brickwork, etc). Surprisingly though, on a sunny Friday in January, there were only two other tables occupied while we were there from about 4−6pm. Just figured it would be busier. Tried the Garlic Dots (bread knots, tossed and baked in herbed garlic butter, with sopressata and parmesan served with marinara sauce. $ 8) which were delicious (served as one mass of bread in a hot skillet that you tear apart and dip). The Morris East Shaved Salad was very good. (shaved root vegetables, shaved onion, cilantro, lemon +caper vinaigrette. $ 9), with the veggies sliced paper-​thin and cut into perfect circles, first time I’ve seen that. Partner had the daily pizza special (chicken bbq with fennel) and loved it as much as he loves their Hawaiian — officially his favorite pizza place in HRM. Very friendly service.
Second visit: 7pm on a Friday during the DineAround Savour food festival with another couple. Called in advance to see about reservations, told they don’t take any, but that the place fills up around 6:30. Luckily we got there to grab the last table for four. Felt a bit squished between the other tables, but can’t really complain since we did arrive at that peak time. Service was good this time as well. We all came for the three-​course $ 29 prix fix menu. I got the WINTER KALE SALAD (Local kale, roasted parsnip, squash & beet, nasturtium vinaigrette) which was light on the dressing, but that’s how I like mine, so enjoyed this. Had the mushroom pizza as my entrée, which I’ve had before and love. Tried a delicious sundae for dessert with caramel and that hard crunchy stuff that I forget the name of (Crunchie bars are made of it). My partner loved his STEAK FRITES PIZZA (Shaved grass fed beef, peppercorn demi, mushrooms, gruyère, topped with housemade potato chips & green onion) as he loves every Morris East pizza he’s ever tried. A friend in our party didn’t love the ROASTED LAMB GNOCCHI (cooked in our wood-​fired oven), noting that it barely had any sauce on it at all.
Overall I like it here a lot and will be back. I wish they had a patio for the summer.

We went here back in July. The service was very good, and the owner was very friendly. We sat on the patio and liked the ambiance, despite our corner table being extremely close to the neighboring one.
I ordered the Kentucky Blitz specialty drink; I didn’t like it, but my wife loved it; owner was nice and comped me a beer.
The food was very enjoyable, but was nothing incredible. We thought the food was a bit overpriced for what one got.

There are few times in life when a drink is over the top. The pepperberry fiz rocks and what sets it apart is the fact that it’s made with love! Ooh fresh grapefruit juice, fresh mint, great gin… and I haven’t even gotten to the whole wheat amazing crust pizza!

So I went to Morris East Twice in one week because I wanted to try 2 things on the menu.
First Day: I was greet by a sweet waitress who seated me at a nice little table with fresh carnation flowers, The Place was rather busy and a bit rowdy but it’s a nice place to go with your partner or even a group of friends [if they’re not bothered by noise since it can be either pretty quiet or very busy]
Anyways I had the Due of Dips with Flat bread, with Ranchioli Dip, I had a caesar salad, Glass of cola and for Dessert. Peanut Butter Tart with chocolate Ganche served with ice cream. Well I LOVED the Duo Dips and long for the Ranchioli sauce again [they have different dips during the day]. I thought the salad was a bit sour and not my thing but the freshly made sourdough croutons helped a lot. now for the dessert it was interesting but BE WARNED if you have fragile teeth it is NOT for you because the candy caramel peanuts are tough and can cause damage to weak teeth and also the ice cream isn’t really that much [shot glass with fresh fruit] but was good quality ice cream though. Also the waitress tried her very best to try and exclude my salad and dessert from my bill because it didn’t please me but we kinda had a «kindness argument» which lead to her removing it from my bill and me increasing her tip to the exact amount and trying to say it’s already in her hand I’m not taking nay money back xP
Second Day: Now this day was the best day and the meal I had made me bring this rating to 5 stars instead of 4. I had the Margarita Pizza and let me tell ya. it was wonderful, didn’t eat the garnish of large basil leaves but I can order without it, but anyways Fun fact with me is I scrap the toppings off pizza and eat the sauce and bread [yes strange I know] but in my entire life, this is the first pizza I didn’t do that to. The Cheese, the Sauce, the classic bread was AWESOME! and now whenever I’m in Halifax with money I go down there for it. So all in all sweet staff, awesome food, not bad of price tag and easy to find [literally go across the road from Snappy Tomato on Barrington.]

Man do I ever love the pizza here!
It’s not your traditional mom n’ pop or pizza franchise type of pizza though. So those who are looking for that kind of pizza, you’re probably better off heading over to Pizzatown or another chain.
Also, I was going to give them a 4-​star rating because I found the service was a bit slow — but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. It was supper time on a Saturday night and the place was pretty much full. So I guess that’s to be expected.
I ordered the Three Mongers pizza… it was just SO good. I ordered it on traditional crust but our server brought one out on whole wheat — she quickly realized her mistake as soon as she put down my plate. Apogolized and came back with a traditional one within a few minutes.
Finished up the pizza and a few of the others ordered dessert — I passed on it but quickly regretted my decision once all the desserts came out… the peanut butter and chocolate dessert looked by far the best… I’m still regretting my decision 2 days later!

Stopped in last night for the last night of Dina Around Halifax. I’ve only ever had the pizza here so I was anxious about order the spatzle with beef bourguignon. It was awesome, I could tell the spatzle was made to order because the fresh herbs inside where still bright green and the beef bourguignon tasted like it was braised inside the wood burning oven (Dutch oven style?). The serving was huge and I gave myself a bellyache but I had to eat the whole thing. My husband had the dunk confit pizza, that was great too but they mistakenly made it on a white crust instead of while wheat. Busy as usual, get there before 7pm on a Friday.

I am very surprised this is my first review of Morris east. I have been dinning here for several years now. This review will be about last night. It was the last day of dine around menu and for those who do not know it is a special menu and price select restaurants offer for the month of February. Morris east is always in the lineup and often has the most interesting menu and at the lowest price. So we went last night and were totally blown away. The kale and Brussels sprout salad was amazing so impressive in plating presentation and the main course I went for the duck confit pizza OMG it was good. My wife had the beef Spaetzle it looked good big portion size. The desert was a candy bar trio of crunchy bar, peanut butter cup and caramel chocolate ball. They were presented in miniature size and plated very nicely.
The only thing that could have been better was on the service end. The server had asked us if we wanted anything to drink. We asked for water. She came back with the water and again asked if we wanted anything to drink. I found this to be very pushy and rude no means no. When asked if I wanted whole wheat crust or white I said whole wheat and what came to my table white crust. I am not asking for the server to change the colour of the table napkin to match my wife’s dress like is done at the four seasons or to have a man in a tuxedo standing by with a straight razor type device and small tray to wipe crumbs from our table between courses which is done at the ritz carlton. I am only asking for the server to pay a little more attention to the answers of questions she asked us.

The lovely Shannon H suggested Morris East for dinner and since I clearly trust her judgement on all things Halifax I showed up without even knowing what kind of food they made. That’s right, no Unilocal previews, no menu photo hunt, just blind trust that I’d have some good stuff to put in my tummy. And Shannon did not lead me astray!
(In case you are wondering about the food it’s pizza mainly with a handful of salads and starters and a special of the day, which happened to be a burger the day I was there.)
The cocktail list is small, but stout with interesting and delicious choices. Same with the beers and wines. I opted for a local Nova Scotian wine that I thoroughly enjoyed. And while I was sorely tempted by many (MANY!) of their pizzas like the Blue (prosciutto, blue cheese, fresh arugula) or the Peach (woodfired peaches, goat cheese, shallots, prosciutto, maple rosemary aioli) I ended up ordering a custom made version with bacon and goat cheese. The bacon came in strips, rather than pieces like I was expecting, but my teeth took care of that and my tastebuds thought it was magnificent. In fact, I took my leftovers back to the hotel with the thought that I might just have to eat it for breakfast prior to my early morning flight the next day.
It was so good that I did.
Service is lovely, the desserts are divine (get the peanut butter one if it’s available), and the atmosphere is cozy. So, you know, you should go there and enjoy. Who knows? We may run into one another on my next Halifax journey.

After telling myself several times to visit this spot, I finally decided to check it out today and I’m glad I did. I really didn’t have much of an excuse as it is only 5 minutes from work, but I generally end up at PG’s Café and Grill.
Morris East is not overly large in terms of size; however, it has that cozy feel that makes you feel at home. The staff were quite friendly and patient as I asked some questions regarding the specials and their specific portions.
I decided to order the pepperoni pizza and salad with strawberry sherbet. The food arrived within 15 minutes and I was impressed with the quality of the pizza where it was cooked on the wood stove. There was very little grease on the pizza and I actually wanted to have more, but; alas, it was just about time to head back to work. The sherbet was terrific despite the $ 6.00 price tag, but sometimes you have to pay more for high quality stuff.
The female bathroom is on the upper level of the restaurant while the male bathroom is downstairs. It is a small bathroom; even so, it was pretty clean and they have a towel dispenser instead of a hot air machine.
In the end, I was pleased with my visit to Morris East; the service was some of the best I received in a long time and the food was terrific. I will definitely go back in the near future.

With fifty reviews, it almost seems pointless to yell into the void, but Morris East deserves it. And I don’t have anything to do at work right now.
Morris East has been one of those places where I’ve heard nothing but good things about and yet I’ve never gone there until last week. Despite living three blocks away. Well a couple weeks ago, I cleansed myself of this shame with a delicious meal and all around wonderful experience.
My significant other and I went here on a Thursday night, which as it turns out is their burger night. With my all research on burgers, both with my mind and mouth (ok, mostly mouth) I always like to try a new burger. Tonight the burger comprises of ground short rib with roasted jalapenos mixed in the meat, smoked cheddar and of course bacon, along with some potato wedges on the side. After our orders are taken by our friendly and attentive waitress, I sip on a Propeller pilsner and take in the sights — the place still feels new and chic with lots of exposed brick and modern interior designing. There’s an interesting mix of customers ranging from your ‘hip’ older crowd to my 20-​something peers and even a family. Good food attracts all sorts, I suppose!
Upon it’s arrival, I’m eager to try my burger. It comes open faced, allowing you to dress it to your content, with a cup of house-​made ketchup and some arugula. The burger is well executed with a nice beef flavour and the jalapenos are noticeable, although they don’t overwhelm the other toppings. Both the cheese and bacon add a nice smokiness, however I wish the burger came with more toppings of the vegetable variety to add some other flavours and textural contrasts; the sprigs of arugula that come with it don’t quite cut it.
This being a a fancy-​ish restaurant I figured I wasn’t going to receive a pile of sweet potato wedges and pondered getting an appetizer since I was famished, and alas I should have. There’s only three or four wedges and although they’re a good size, this only makes them unwieldy and outside the realm of finger food and in knife and fork land. Although being somewhat skeptical about trying to improve upon the perfection that is Heinz ketchup, the house-​made stuff grows on me and I slather it on each bite of sweet potato. It has a much more pronounced tomato flavour than commercial ketchup, and along with some spices and acidity, it has a great flavour.
To finish things off we split a peanut butter tart with honeycomb. With the aforementioned ingredients and plenty of chocolate, what’s not to love?
While I couldn’t make myself give them a five star, it should be noted that a four star for Morris East is higher than the same rating for most other restaurants; they’re in a higher class and I expect more. That said, it is a fantastic restaurant and I can’t wait to go back!
