Went to Louly’s for lunch today. I was excited to try this place out after Spartan closed. Gosh I miss Spartan. Food was OK, I had a «salad» that consisted of cucumber and yogurt on top on a plate. It tasted OK, but wasn’t presented very well.. I also had the falafel, which again was OK, but nothing special. Pretty disappointed with Louly’s, and don’t really have anything good to say about it except prices are good.

The food is great. The place was completely empty at 6:30pm on a Friday night which almost make me turn around after walking through the door. The waitress was a little surprised to see us… odd considering it’s a restaurant. The food is actually really good and worth trying.

Tonight I needed something to eat after yoga, and discovered on returning to my car that I also needed a headlight bulb. So off I went to Walmart to sort out the bulb, and coming back into downtown I decided to sort out the need for a meal by finally giving Louly’s a try. The décor and layout of the place is very simple yet pleasant, another reviewer mentioned the massive TV tuned to LBC showing an old B&W show of some woman singing beautifully, mournfully in Arabic. Anyhow, the food. The menu is simple, many things you’d recognize as Middle Eastern/Mediterranean staples: hummus, falafel, etc. I decided to try something new, koshary. It is basically a mix of rice, lentils, and pasta — accompanied by a couple of spicy sauces which add a great flavor — and a simple salad with a dressing of oil, vinegar and oregano. After dinner as I got into a discussion with the young woman working(mainly about what was going on in the Middle East) I learned that this meal is sort of the mainstay of Egyptian cuisine, so it was a perfect choice. Very simple, very filling, and something new which is always great. I finished my meal with a demitasse of thick, sweet Egyptian coffee, and it was excellent. So, fair enough to say I will be back.

Half of my one-star rating is for the very cool black and white footage of trad Egyptian music that was being shown on the large wall mounted screen.(Normally I despise seeing TVs in restaurants/pubs.) The other half is for the server who agreed that the chicken I had ordered was almost still raw on the skewer.

I must say I was generally heartbroken by the closing of Spartan at this location earlier this year. Spartan had been a weekend breakfast destination for me(and when I was going through school… during the week too!) I still miss the Marias. However Louly’s is pretty close to filling the void. The new owners moved a few things around, but the inside vibe is still very much the same. If you were a fan of Spartan hash browns. GUESSWHAT! It looks as though they sold the famous recipe to the new restaurateurs. The prices have gone up slightly, but it still ranges around 6 – 7 $. Besides your standard breakfast there’s also a few new breakfast choices. As well the menu boasts some delicious looking mid-east fare that I’m dying to check out as well. Oh and the rice pudding is delicious. You can tell the staff is new to the restaurant business, but they were friendly and paid attention to detail. It wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be, but I would suspect it will pick up when word gets out… and when the students get back.

On Saturday afternoon, I was with a group of about 7 people who were ravenous and ready for a lunchtime feast. We decided it would be fun to try out this new Egyptian restaurant on Quinpool Road. The only problem was, that when we arrived there was a sign on the door stating that due to an emergency, they’d be closed until the afternoon. We peeked inside and a young man who spotted us came to apologize for the inconvenience. Apparently, the chef had cut herself and was at the hospital. We felt badly about the situation and I felt selfishly disappointed because I really wanted to test out their fare. I checked out the menu, and although there are not tons of offerings, the ones that caught my attention, sounded fairly standard and good. Louly’s has falafel wraps for $ 6, grape leaves and salads, plus a lot of meaty dishes like seafood tagine. The place has been seriously updated and had a bright welcoming feel with fresh paint and new tables. I’m looking forward to getting back in soon to have lunch or dinner. This new Egyptian restaurant is definitely a welcomed addition to the Quinpool scene. Let’s hope their dishes are as exciting as their arrival!
