Maxwell’s Plum English Pub

No host, bitter bartender, just all around bad service. Trashy bathrooms and dirty glasses. Avoid at all costs.

Just had lunch at Maxwell’s Plum. The atmosphere is typical for an English pub, comfortable and cozy. Lots of beverages to choose from, and a decent menu. I ordered the onion soup, which was very tasty. One of my dining partners had the Friday special, fish and chips, which was huge and, according to him, excellent. My other dining partner had the burger platter. He said, while the burger was overcooked, it tasted really good, and the fries were good as well. Our server was friendly and efficient. Our complaint was the price of the pop. We were really surprised that we were charged for refills, considering the size of the glass (about 175ml). $ 5 for 350ml of fountain pop is absurd.
We’ll probably return to MP again, but next time we’re getting water.

Best Bunch price in town if you’re looking for a standard, filling breakfast. From 11am-​3pm on Saturdays they’ll fill you up with 3 eggs, 2 toast, 5 bacon and home cut fries for a mere $ 3.99! Beverage purchase is required, but what is breakfast without a cup-​a-​joe? Coffee and brunch for under $ 10 is a great way to start your Saturday. If you’re looking for something more to wet your whistle Maxwell’s has the largest selection of brews and ciders in town, with specials every day of the week. The atmosphere is a traditional pub so jeans and a tee fit right in here. My only complaint would be that depending on who’s serving up sometimes you get a heap of fries and sometimes just a sprinkle.

Beer menu is awesome. Food available at half price between 9 to 11 and what a menu they have. One of the best nachos I have ever had anywhere outside.
Place is not to noisy so you don’t need to scream a lot for general conversation.

It’s not fancy but it’s hard to argue with the pretty good deals.

If you’re baby faced, be prepared to be asked for two pieces of ID or get kicked out.
If you arrive after 9, there is a menu of items you can order for half off. Amazing! Four bucks for a plate of mussels. They also offer escargot which surprised me greatly. On this particular occasion my chicken quesadilla had rotten lettuce on it, but the server was nice about it and took it off my bill. The manager joked that he was going to get one for lunch but now he’s changed his mind. As someone with social anxiety, I appreciated that, as I always feel like crap when I have to send something back.
The beer here is pretty cheap. It’s our go to place because it’s reasonable and close to home. The servers are nice and there are some good deals on food. It can be a little noisy sometimes and they only serve pub style food, but if you can handle that, it’s a good place to sit and throw back a pitcher or two with a group of friends.

The main thing I liked about Maxwell’s was the location. It is pretty much right in the middle of everything. No matter what you are doing or where you are it is fairly close. I visited on Thanksgiving so it wasn’t very busy. I sat at the bar and received good service despite the fact that it was a Holiday. The girls helping me were nice about offering suggestions and letting me try a few of the beers before I committed to a selection. The beer list was very good with plenty of local choices. I didn’t eat but the food smelled good!

This used to be a great pub but they’ve recently adopted a new menu and it is more expensive and less tasty. The last time I was there, the waitress was grouchy and quite slow with the service. It is nice that the apps are a deal after 9, but there are many other pubs downtown that are better.

I wouldn’t eat here but the vibe is pretty cool and down to earth.

Great menu, great selection of beers, inexpensive, and a really great atmosphere. Whenever we’re in Halifax we always make a point of going here. In fact, we used to stay at the Marriott across the street long after its quality took a downturn just because of the close proximity to Maxwell’s Plum. A great east coast location that this west coaster really enjoys.

Great daily specials. Steak and fries for $ 8.99 reg $ 15 when we were there on Thursday. (Steak was delicious but a little too fatty. Onions, mushrooms and poutine extra though meh.). Beach chair lager 80 oz brewtenders for $ 20 were great too. Good beer. Been here a few times. 80 inch TV in upstairs area. This area is quite dark, which was fine. more of a party/​sports theme hence the 80 inch TV. The TV had a standard definition channel on it EEEKKK. actually ALL of the TVs in the restaurant had the same awful standard definition (sports net east with eastlink) channel on them!. annoying… Lots of beer on tap, friendly staff. The place does get busy, and staff sometimes have a hard time bouncing around and taking care of everybody.

While the beer is good the wait staff are clueless I have actually officially boycotted this bar I have never had them get the tables bills correct and they will try to force you to pay other peoples orders when they discharge them and have already left the bar … Great beer mind you love the brewtenders just need to stop hiring the type of applicants they have been for at least the last 9 years

An amazing pub feel. Great staff. Always fun as soon as you walk in.

Go-​to spot for cheap pub food and great drinks! Whether your a cocktail drinker or a beer lover, this place is the best! With so many beers on tap, a full list of appetizers you can’t go wrong with this place! I’ve been here. like 8+ times? And i haven’t had a problem! Love it!

I am writing this a bit late, but I’ve yet to forget the experience I had. A couple Saturdays ago I went to Maxwell’s to eat and grab drinks with friends (I had maybe been there once before, years ago). The place was packed, as are most places downtown on a Saturday — so I don’t believe there is any excuse for the following service we received.
It was probably 15 minutes before we had our drink order taken and another 15 for the drinks to arrive. My drink came another 15 minutes and 2 reminders after everyone else’s (yes I’m saying it was 45 minutes after arriving before I had my drink). From our first interaction with our server, we requested food menus. We then proceeded to request them from multiple servers as they were helping other people and bringing other food and drinks to tables. On over 5 occasions we were told «I’ll go find some». After over an hour we finally had menus at our table. I have NEVER been at any food establishment were it took 30 – 45 minutes to get a drink and OVER AN HOUR to get a food MENU (not even the food!).
I doubt I will ever go to Maxwell’s again, at least NEVER on the weekend.

It’s a drinking spot. So the food is good when you have a group of people and a few brew tenders going…

I love Maxwell’s Plum for 4 reasons; good atmosphere, good pub food, and good prices. I dislike it for one and only one, the services. The Maxwell girls aren’t the sweetest bunch I have seen except for the odd few.

Normally, I like to leave any negative aspects of a review until the end; however, I was disappointed to see Maxwell’s charge $ 8.00 for a Mike’s Cranberry. It had been several months since I was to this spot, so it was a bit of a let-​down to be charged such an outrageous amount for 1 drink.
With that out of the way, I do enjoy coming to this place as it has a lot of character to it and the staff are quite friendly. My friend and I decided to go to the bottom level for dinner and some football as the NFL Playoffs were taking place. There were very few people in the pub, so we had the downstairs basically to ourselves.
I ordered the clubhouse and fries while my buddy had the steak sandwich; the meal was quite tasty and it arrived quickly, which wasn’t too much of a surprise since there were only around 12 – 15 people in the pub. The turkey was a tiny bit scorched, but it was a minor inconvenience; in addition, my friend thoroughly enjoyed his steak sandwich.
The pub’s bathrooms are located on the top floor, so it is a bit of a walk, but you’ll be able to work your calf muscles if you need to go. The bathroom is unique in that it is has automatic soap and water ready to be dispensed for you, while the shape of the sink is long and rectangular. I joked with my friend that the sink would be perfect to give a small dog a nice sponge bath, but I don’t endorse such behaviour at a pub.
Overall, it was great coming back to Maxwell’s and I would have given the visit 4 stars, but for the price of the cooler.

$ 2.50 breakfast on Saturday. Need I say more? No? Well, I will. You get eggs, toast, fries, and meat (bacon or sausage or whatevs) for $ 2.50 plus a drink. It’s good, it’s fast, and it’s cheap. Get there a little before 11 to get a table and if warm milk isn’t your thing, get a coffee.
All in all, worth every penny.
Oh, and they have a ton of beer.

Vous voulez prendre une bonne bière et essayer autant des bières locales qu’importées et bien c’est la place idéale à Halifax.
Le décor est bien celui d’un pub anglais, il y a une petite terrasse très intéressante mais pas de soleil vers 16:00…
Bref super place pour boire et festoyer!
