The Village Grocer

Imagine a charming little farmer’s market that sells specialty, gourmet foods. Breads are baked fresh, cuts of meat and seafood are beautiful arranged, and they’ve got fancy teas and snacks everywhere. This is what the Village Grocer is, but in a nice little building in Markham. There really is no other place like this around unless you go further south into Toronto.
When you step inside, it’s just a delightful experience. You can smell the fresh foods all around you; a lot of which you can buy and eat right there in their dining area. Visually, it has a rustic and clean appeal, and evokes the feeling of being transported to a rural town market. There is so much variety and I am certain you can get specific things here that are very hard to get in other grocery stores (e.g. foie gras, exotic spices, etc.) I love to come here even when I have nothing to buy.
Something I really enjoy are their pre-​made sandwiches. I’ve been able to try 3 or 4 different types and every one of them have been delicious. They are overflowing with fresh ingredients with tons of flavour. One of my absolute favourites is the turkey and avocado. They’re also a bit on the pricier side (around $ 7 – 8), but like everything else in the store, the quality makes it well worth it.

We live nearby and love coming here for their bakery and sandwich counter. Somehow, they make the best deli sandwiches and we find ourselves visiting at least weekly to get our fix!
Friendly staff and lots of selection — lots of unique products. Regular items appear to be significantly overpriced… we tend to visit here to get the unique and not often found items or for the delicious prepared foods/​baked goods.
Definitely a favourite!

Just visited today after hearing stories about this place. It’s not that far away from me, but man is it a whole lot better of a shopping experience. Kinda like a pusatari’s, with a lot of brands that Whole Foods sells for the same or less.
Their bakery section is amazing choice for hosting guests and surprising people. Picked up their mini cheese cakes and the reviews after serving was well done. I also picked up some fresh cut bacon. They have a good selection of sauces, marinades, and boutique brands that really help add a nice edge to some home cooking. Would visit again as it’s a lot bigger than it looks. Very well laid out and the staff is very helpful.

We have been coming here at least weekly since moving to Unionville 16 years ago and still have yet to find anything less than stellar. Yes some of the items are pricy especially the butcher but you get what you pay for and this is spectacular. :) Thanks Evan !!!
PS I just noticed someone named Alfred A from Aurora mentioned that the cashiers are giving him attitude. I find that VERY hard to believe, he’s either too sensitive or just imagining things. Ive bought from them weekly for over 16 years, as I mentioned, and Ive NEVER detected even a tiny note of attitude. They are all just the perfect amount of friendly but not pushy/​helpful but not in your face/​attendant exactly as much as you would need/​and perfectly professional. Ive never had a problem at all, from any of the staff there. In fact this reminds me of a story. I was playing tennis nearby once, at a new tennis club where I didn’t know many people so I joined a Womens Round Robin. I played for an hour with a group of 3 new ladies who were lovely. Then my ball rolled onto the very very back (i.e. touching the chain link fence) of the court next to me. I waited patiently, far away from their court, until their point had ended and their ball was on the opposite side, being retrieved as it was rolling AWAY into the next court even farther away from me. I RAN to the fence and RAN back with my ball. Suddenly one of the ladies noticed what I did and screamed at my 3 fellow players to «control that chick, she can’t come onto our court to get her goddamed ball, she has to wait for us to send it back, doesn’t she know the fucking rules, etc etc etc…» She kept going and going and going. I was so shocked at this rudeness, I just stared at my girlfriends and said «Is this a joke? Is she serious?» The answer was «Yes, those cows are on the A TEAM and they just think they are god’s gift to tennis. They have so much hatred that they even yell at the VILLAGE GROCER STAFF!!!»

So THATS how friendly the staff are at VG– they are known as a stereotype for the LAST people you would ever expect to get yelled at. Because they don’t deserve it, because they are all awesome and over and above. Thanks Evan and team !!!

Although you can’t come to village grocer for everyday shopping it is great for deserts bread and excellent quality meat!

I’ve never actually been to the Village Grocer in person, but I’ve tried at least four different cakes of their’s and also their Toblerone Shortbread! I do plan to visit sometime in the future though, then my review would be more informative and accurate. The baked goods are of high quality, made beautifully– a great place to buy a birthday cake for someone than your average Chinese bakery. My favourite cake from here so far is the blueberry cheesecake, I plan to try their jelly log next time!

The Village Grocer is a regular stop on our grocery circuit.
The store is small, family owned, and family friendly.
There is lots of parking and it’s not crowded when you shop.
One of the best reasons to come here and that many of the items are made in-​store.
The bakery and dessert section is amazing!
All the cakes, muffins, scones, and hot buns are fresh baked, gorgeous, and drool-​worthy.
They sell day old scones as well which sell out by end of day.
They have adorable themed cookies and cupcakes as well.
They even have a meat room and their deli meats and sausages are excellent.
We often pick up some cold cuts and fresh baked bread (olive loaf, OMG).
Love visiting this place! :)

Pick your food items from the counter and pay at the little Café. Had a savoury pepper with some rice beans and cuppa English Breakfast tea. Perfect spring ambience surrounded by plants and blooms.

Background: I Googled around for the best cheesecake in Toronto (or Markham), and found a RedFlagDeals page that suggested The Village Grocer. I looked up their website and noticed how pretty their cakes were. I would need two for an upcoming event (serving about 15 – 20 people)
Location: Northwest corner of Kennedy and 16^th Ave. Decent amount of parking space. Great for suburbians. This grocer is higher end, lots of organic foods and premium spices etc. Definitely pricier than your typical Longos or Loblaws etc.
Quality and Price: When I first arrived, they did not have any Strawberry Cheesecake. I was told to call back and MAYBE they’d have it. So I placed my order for two large cakes, Blueberry White Chocolate, and Strawberry New York Style. When I called in the morning, I was told that only the small version was available. Which is fine, I took it.
I ordered a large Blueberry White Chocolate Cheesecake (serves 10) came out to be $ 28, and a small Strawberry New York Cheesecake (serves 5 — 6) was $ 18.
I was heading to a difficult venue and asked the bakers if they could slice the cake for me. However, they refused saying that it «would crumble» and «not be beautiful». I said I didn’t care, it would just be much more convenient for me if they could cut it. They said no unless I ordered a different cake. I was slightly annoyed by this.
At the venue, I cut the cake and it was, in fact, VERY crumbly. The cheesecakes themselves tasted very nice, but it was very messy to serve. Everyone enjoyed the cakes. I think they do live up to the hype, but just be aware that cutting the cake is going to get messy. I found that the pricing was very fair.
Service: Service was satisfactory. They didn’t go above and beyond the call of duty. It’s what you would expect to find in a higher end grocer.
Overall: Experience was okay. It met all my expectations but I wouldn’t say I was blown away at any point in time.

Always curious about this grocery store. So I walk in to see what is like and no surprise it’s expensive. I walk around and didn’t find any eggs. Everything seems very crowded and it’s hard to see because it has all kind of decoration. This just isn’t my kind of store.

We love their cakes!!! They’re delicious and decently priced! Their fruit log cake is light and so yummy. Banana cream pie is fresh as can be. A must try for sure.
Haven’t really tried their other grocery items, but they seem pretty pricey. Their wraps at the café are made daily and taste pretty healthy. I was also surprised that even their latte was so good. Of course a bit on the expensive end but I think all their items are but worth it.
Definitely our go to place for desserts from now on!!!

The Village Grocer is a beautiful grocery store. Every perishable grocery sold is the frestest. The meat /​protein area is clean (no smell). The bakery counter is the best among all grocers in Markham. The ready-​to-​eat section carries gourmet food suitable for lunch and dinner. The in-​store café serves coffee that is good enough.
The only issue I have is with the boxed and bottled groceries. They are way overpriced. I can easily find the exact same item (same brand, same size) in other stores at lower prices. Hence, if you are looking for the best, I suggest that you purchases the perishable groceries and baked items here and buy the non-​perishable items at other stores.

Food is fresh, blueberry cheese cake is awesome. But there’s something I don’t like about the attitudes of the cashiers. The Baker side they’re all very nice.

The Village grocer has been opened for awhile now and it’s just around the corner from where I live.
Awesome selection of cooked foods by their own kitchen. They make soups and mains and freeze them. Love their homemade soup. Although its expensive but it’s yummmy delicious.
I like the selections of many condiments especially the olive oil selection. It’s not a very huge supermarket, the prices are on the higher end but you won’t regret if you need to entertain guests as they will be happy.
I like where a small part of the store has been divided into an area for lunch. They make fresh and yummy sandwiches but again its a bit more on the pricey side.
All in all, It’s a good place to shop if you are looking for fresh quality produce.

The Village Grocer’s new location is nice and posh.
Great selections of cooked food, antipasto and other food great for entertaining. Prices wise is definitely on the higher end but there are not too many competition up where Village Grocer locates.
I am please with their selections of balsamic vinegar and olive oil and of course organic and natural food products.
Some of the shelves were still half empty seems like they still stocking. I will have to come back again when the Village Grocer completely ready for business!

I absolutely love this grocery store. Aside from the convenience of being a short walk away from my home, everything is of the highest quality. Something I very much enjoy, is going there for lunch. Nothing beats their fresh sandwiches, wraps, and soups. Their bakery section is also great; everything they make: their scones, pies, cakes, etc. You will find many products and brands that are hard to find in other grocery stores. All their home made ready-​to-​eat soups and dishes are delicious, and their BBQ’ing meats are amazing. You must try the marinated lamb! Their flower and garden section has a large variety of plants, they make incredibly pretty arrangements! You really feel this is a family operated business, they treat it with much love and care, and that’s passed through to the customers. The staff is warm and extremely helpful. You can order anything in advance for a party and you will impress!
Edit: The outdoor patio is now open, and it’s beautiful; covered in plants and shaded. Great for the summer!
