For a pub named the Union Jack one would hope to find a least one British beer on tap but alas this place ranks as OK if you’re in the neighborhood. Staff was friendly but patrons during the afternoon when I dropped in were a mixture of blue collar working class which was great but also long term welfare and unemployed over intoxicated and sharing their thoughts and telephone calls with the entire bar. I ordered a triple decker clubhouse sandwich with a couple of pints of domestic beer. Beer needs to be colder but the sandwich was great. Place is OK if you’re in the neighborhood but don’t make a special trip to come here.

Decent food for decent prices. Friendly staff. Nice but somewhat confused décor. Not much of a draught beer selection,(Steel and Oak guys! Come on!) I would recommend going for the half price appies or for dinner, but would definitely not advise staying any later on the weekends. The crowd seems to get a little sketchy past 8pm. They also have bands on Friday and Saturday so if you’re going out to have a pint with some friends and catch up, it is not the place.

So I walk in to this place for the first time since it was remodeled and I was not impressed. Everything is the same even after it was gutted and rebuilt. Sure there are different tables but the seating chart is about the same with the same upper level. There are at least 9TV screens in there… why? It’s so small and there’s a huge screen on the wall. I noticed the Budweiser red light which is cool but it does nothing now since hockey is over. I had food and a beer. Both way below par. Parmesan chicken and spaghetti on special so I went for it. It came fast and that makes me wonder how long it was sitting on the warmer for. The breaded chicken did not taste like Parmesan. It had cheese melted on top of it… ok great. The spaghetti… the spaghetti… I’ve made better spaghetti than that. The sauce tasted like it came from a can and had little flavour. The bread that came with is the same bread you buy at Safeway for a buck or two. Artisan French bread or something like it. It wasn’t very garlicy/flavorful. The beer tasted watered down a bit and it was not as cold as it should be. One beer, one meal and I hit the ground running. I don’t see myself going back. Moonrakers food was better and the beer was colder. Service was good for the 20 people that were in there… but upon payment with the debit machine she was very close and possibly looked at the tip amount along with my pin. I wish I could take the whole tip back after that.

I’m going to KISS this review, because it’s a pub… and I’m having a particularly uncreative Monday Morning. The beef dip was delicious, the service was as refreshing as the beer and I love that they have a Brown’s booze strategy with cheap house wine and beer.

It seems that some people are anonymously trying to give this place a bad name.(M.P. hint hint) The accusations are ridiculous and about as funny as drop kicking puppies. The food is excellent and the price points are good. There’s different entertainment every week… why would varied entertainment be a problem with people… and from what I’ve witnessed the staff and service are great. Why don’t you give a ‘real review’ and quit slamming the place? You don’t have to slag this place for no good reason.

Went here last night with friends for dinner and drinks. Appys were very good, dinner was great, beer was cold and pretty red headed waitress was awesome and helpful. Prices were also good.

I personally do not care for this place at all. I thought that the renovation would result in better food, service and overall experience. But NOT! The food is horrible(especially their sheppards pie) and what’s worse they increased the prices to make up for their renovation. I find the patrons are often obnoxious drunks. The staff are very unprofessional and SKETCHY — especially the Liquor Store next door. You almost have to have a shower after leaving there. I am not kidding you — the older«cranky» staff — especially the Assistant Manager — Kathy/Cathy. I purchased a product that was punctured and created a mess in my fridge. In trying to explain the situation, she was completely unempathetic and disgustingly rude! Take a course in customer service. If this is the kind of management the establishment aspires to have run the place… their days are numbered in terms of being a solid choice of entertainment. Icky, Icky. The feel is old, cranky and sketchy. I recommend taking your business elsewhere and supporting local business that CARES about their patrons in a real way!

This place, and the previous Moonrakers, benefits from it’s location — surrounded by high rises and seniors who don’t want to go too far for their Sunday Night specials… We kept trying to like this place, but our experiences wouldn’t allow for us to give it more than a «meh.» It looks like the owners couldn’t figure out if they wanted a country bar, rock bar, or British pub. Just choose one!!! The décor fits either higher end rock or country bar, the food is a mix of all three, and you can’t get more British than Union Jack… Come on, we’re in the«Royal City», yes, but a little more creativity might be nice. Food has never impressed us, and unfortunately, you’re selling yourself WAY short if this is what you consider tasty pub food(just wander a couple blocks down and you’ll find what i’m talking about). I don’t know if the other reviewers’ taste buds have been burnt off, or what, but the dishes we’ve tried haven’t been anything to write home(or on Unilocal) about. Service is also very so-so… Drinks are the only thing that I would suggest ordering if you do head there.

Last time I went here it was called MoonRakers. Wow! The new owners have really classed up the joint! Just moved to New West and this was the fifth pub we’ve checked out and definitely the best so far. Prompt service, well staffed, good menu, nice atmosphere, above average décor(Donnelly style), good selection of beers, fun & original(and aptly named) cocktails. I had the backyard burger and house salad. My husband took advantage of their half price appy special and had the poutine and the fish tacos. Everything we had was pretty tasty. I’ll be back.

Solid 3.5 stars; a Vancouver-DT feel of a pub, a bit dimmed, booth seating, nice décor and friendly service. Claims their fish and chips are famous so that’s oughta lure me back one day. friendly service. Located beside Tamarind Hill.

My husband has been going here since the Moonrakers was revamped and I will say I was suspicious about it. However, last night my suspicions were relieved. Now whether that was from all the Guinness I had at the Reach, it was St. Patrick’s Day after all, or the fact that the Jack has a better feel I am not sure. The Pros: Live music(Irish Folk last night), nice staff(a daughter of a friend works here) and nice ambiance. The Cons: The bathrooms didn’t seem to have been upgraded in the reno. It has Public House in the name(Why is everything a public house now?). I will be back when it’s not so merry of an occasion and see if any of the positive changes.

So since my first review, we have been back and so glad we gave this pub another try. The service has greatly improved as has the quality of the food(though the braised short ribs were good the first time) The salads are very fresh and they are serving a better quality of french fry. The wine list unfortunately still consists of just the same 3 mediocre choices but I understand the beer choices are good.

This is the bar New West has been missing. Through a strange series of events I’ve ended up eating or drinking here 5 or 6 times over the last couple weeks, and I’ve decided I really like this place. Minus the Git-r-done neon sign, the ambiance here is pretty good. Lost of dark wood, just the right amount of TV’s and books on the wall make this a cozy place to drink. They’ve got all your pub classics covered on the menu, and a decent drink list(including some craft beers, but they could use a few more). Avoid the nacho’s(the replaced corn chips with lattice cut potatoes and it’s not really good). The club sandwich is really good and they serve some decent wings. They’re still working out the kinks in service. It can go from warm and attentive to indifferent depending on the waiter/waitress you’ve got.

Whether the patrons of the old Moonrakers like it or not, their local pub has been renovated. It’s quite a transformation, from vinyl-seated dive bar to woodsy cozy«gastropub» joint with craft beers. The idea of having a hostess for a pub seems a bit over the top. I’ve never seen that in a pub before, and I wonder how long«here let us seat you» will last. Once you do sneak in for a pint, the food is quite good. The menu features mostly classic pub fare with British dishes like Yorkshire pudding and all things deep fried. However, I do not regret going for dessert first — a decidely Elvis-like chocolate, peanut butter and banana pie with a cookie crust. This area of Uptown lacks classy dining options(most of the decent restaurants are a few blocks away), so the Union Jack should make the most of its niche as a possible date night spot. I would have never gone here much before, except as part of an ironic pub crawl, but I think the Union Jack is now a friendlier destination for female pubizens. Sorry old guys.

This place used to be the Moonrakers Pub, but it’s under new ownership and has been completely renovated. Beer was great and so was the service. No complaints there. I arrived with a full stomach, so didn’t try the food. The décor is good, with a dark wooden theme throughout. It looks more like a restaurant than a pub and there are too many TVs, but that’s the way they do things nowadays. Not sure if the Union Jack branding means the intent is to be a British themed pub, but it doesn’t look like any British pub I’ve been in. Drinks prices seem standard and you have the option of pints, rather than sleeves, which I like. They have a DJ on and the music gets cranked up when the dinner crowd leaves. The mixture is a bit odd — I was tapping my feet to classic rock tunes one minute and sticking my fingers in my ears a few minutes later. But I guess that means it tries to cater to a wide range of tastes. Being in the middle of uptown New West makes it very convenient and I’m sure I’ll be back. Their web page suggests they’ll have live music eventually, which I’m really looking forward to.
