We spent three lovely days with our home base as Ava and Marty’s cozy cabin along the western coast of Vancouver Island. We couldn’t have had nicer hosts; Ava welcomed us and provided delicious breakfast fixins en suite, so we could enjoy light, healthy treats at our leisure. The home made bread and locally roasted coffee were particularly delicious, as were fresh fruits from their own garden! Marty provided a demonstration of his blacksmithing artistry, and both hosts were very helpful with suggestions for places to visit in the area. The accommodations are simple, attractive, clean, extremely comfortable and surrounded by natural and man-made beauty. Literally a 10 minute walk from French Beach, and easy access to endless coastal hikes along the San Juan de Fuca trail, the location and atmosphere is perfect for couples looking for day hike activities and early nights in a very comfy bed. Over the course of 2.5 days in September, we spotted the following, not more than 20 miles from this spot: 2 orcas, 1 grey whale, mama black bear with cubs, harbor seals, a sea lion, bunnies!, quail, bald eagles, another black bear, deer, more deer, countless sea birds, stellar jays, woodpeckers, and the two resident giant dogs and a cat named Princess. You can’t miss the entry to the B&B, as it is guarded by wrought iron dragons, just a few of the creative manifestations of the blacksmith’s hammer. Available on site: Lots of guidebooks, full minikitchen, art gallery of metalsmith work, free wifi, beautiful views, outdoor fireplace, and more to discover. Things to consider bringing: camera, good shoes, light snacks for lunches if you plan on spending a couple of days, as area restaurants are few — but what is available is excellent! We hope to return again soon, perhaps to try another season in this beautiful location.

I’ve been to the BnB here a couple times now, and it’s simply amazing! The Gilbertsons who run the place are just like Ma and Pa and will make you feel relaxed and right at home. If you stay for more than a few days, the price goes down as well. so if you’re planning a lot of backpacking trips or sightseeing in the area, then this place would be perfect for you. There are now two different units, and they’ve been recently upgraded. The front«bungalow» unit is small but really cozy. There’s a kitchenette with basic amenities. There’s also a private bathroom with basic soaps, shampoo, and towels for use. The back unit is quite a bit bigger and has a separate kitchen/dining area and a larger bathroom. It’s connected to the main house, but you’ll still have full privacy from the owners. Marty also runs a blacksmith workshop right on the property, so you’ll be able to take a peek at him working and check out the adjacent art gallery. Be advised theres a huge dog, Sally, that lives on the property but she’s a total sweetheart and mellow and won’t bother you at all. It’s a beautiful area, and I am sure you’ll love the experience.
