Do My Hair & Esthetics

I bought a Groupon to this place to try it out as I’ve walked by it in the past and been curious about it. Long story short — the hair cut I had was ok — it wasn’t a good cut but it wasn’t a horrible cut either (given the poor reviews) but I can see why this place has been receiving poor reviews. When I arrived, I waited over 15 mins with no one greeting me or acknowledging me but not big deal, I flipped through a couple magazines until Élan, the person I booked with was ready. Here was where the experience because a bit amateurish. Élan was friendly enough and directly me quickly to the hair washing sink. Usually the hair dresser has a quick consult with me, asks me about how I want my hair and takes a look to see what kind of hair I have and confirms with me the length I want it cut to (before it gets wet). In this case, half way through may hair wash, he asked me how I wanted my hair and if I wanted a coffee or tea (?) in the middle of my wash. The rest of the hair cut had the same slightly sloppy, rushed, feel about it — since he didn’t put a plastic coat on me and have the towel correctly put on, my front of my shirt of course steadily got wet from my soaking hair which wasn’t properly dried before he started cutting it. The tools he used seem a bit unclean as they were sloppily stored in a drawer and instead of clipping my hair neatly while he cut other parts, he just slopped it over the slide and throughout the hair cut, it keep on falling askew and he kept on slapping back to the side. In actuality, the hair cut itself wasn’t that bad — I had asked for a simple shoulder length bob though. He didn’t asked me how I wanted my bangs cut so I simply had to ask for him to trim my bangs after he had blown dry my hair which he happily did (and that was fine). The blow out he gave me after, however, was good. In summary, there was nothing horrible per say about the salon — the cut was not bad, but you can tell the hair dressers here are perhaps not as professionally trained as other salons.
While I was there, I did notice a steady stream of customers asking for Sarah (who I meant briefly and seemed very friendly) who I believe does esthetics — I think the esthetics business here might be their stronger suit so I may try a brow wax here the next time.
UPDATE: I have to say that despite the first impression from the salon, the cut that I got from Élan was actually quite good. A couple weeks later, the cut is holding up well, air drys wonderfully (alot of the time with his cut I can actually wash and go whereas previously I flat ironed my hair on a regular basis). I think I will keep this salon in my regular rotation going forward!

The guy made rude comments the entire time and put me down. I was treating myself for my birthday, so that wasn’t great. Apparently «A Line Long Bob, shorter in the back» means blunt, boxy mom bob that dries like a helmet regardless of how many times you run a tourmaline iron through it. I’ll have to go get my hair fixed. :/​Maybe next time I’ll bring photos with me. It could’ve just been miscommunication.

I don’t understand the poor reviews, and I’m glad I still gave this place a try despite the reviews. I arrived on time, Leslie introduced himself and I told him what I wanted. He washed my hair just perfectly considering I have a lot of hair, he was easy to chat with and he spent the next 40 minutes drying and styling my hair. He used just the right amount of products and a touch of hairspray for every curl. I was done in exactly 1 hour and I know that because that’s how much I paid the meter.
The salon was impeccably clean and it’s an easy location to park/​find.
I also bought the deal for 2 blow outs and I’m glad I did because I will definitely come back for my second blow out!

I bought a Groupon from this place a while back and was excited to get my hair done in Toronto for a night out. We got there 15 minutes late due to traffic and construction, I’m not from the city and didn’t realize how long it would take, I called to inform them I would be late and I thought it would be no big deal. When my friend and I got there the guy who was styling my hair was very rude and styled my hair like I was from the 80’s, I was not impressed. I could tell that he was rushing and didn’t really care to give me my money’s worth. I then got my makeup done by a really nice girl and she made me look beautiful minus the hair. I’m glad a got something good from the experience.
Furthermore, when I told the owner upon checkout that I was not happy with my hair and that I thought he rushed me she told me he really wanted to leave. What… great customer service?!? Anyways I’ve been to Blo several times and would recommend them hands down. It’s too bad because this place is beautiful, but the staff is rude.

I had my make up done and hair styled in an updo at Do My Hair for my wedding, plus the hair and make up of my bridal party. I also had a trial run a couple of weeks before the wedding, which they strongly encouraged.
Unfortunately I found out on my wedding day that they lost the photos they took of the hair style that we decided on and lost the notes they had taken on the makeup. So there really was no point in doing the trial after all. Also they rescheduled the start time for a couple of us to 30 minutes earlier, without telling us, which caused a bit of rushing around.
They did a pretty good job of the hair and make up, but you have to be very firm with the stylists and make up artist. Some (older) members of the bridal party felt that they were pressured into getting a «look» that they were not comfortable with (ie much bolder makeup than they have ever worn). In the end, most of the bridal party was relatively satisfied with their hair.
My biggest complaint was when it was time to leave. The total bill seemed higher than I expected. I told them that before paying and they assured me it was correct, but they were unable to give me an itemized print out of what I had been charged for. They claimed that their computer system did not allow them to provide a tally, only a total. I left the store and was walking to my car, when I started to feel, for lack of a better term, ripped off. I returned to the store and got them to bust out a calculator to justify the bill, which they did reluctantly. It turns out that they had charged me for over $ 100 worth of make up to «take home». Interestingly enough, I never agreed to buy any make up and they never gave me this make up when I left the store the first time. The entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I resented having to bicker with them after spending so much and on my wedding day! My recommendation to other bridal parties considering Do My Hair is to clearly and explicitly agree on all charges and the total before sitting down.

Really? Really? I paid for someone to blow dry my hair quickly and poorly? I can do a better job at home.
Disclaimer: I have never had a «blow out» before. I do not have curly hair. So, my need for a blow out is very low on the grand scheme of things. But, I had heard good things from my gal Kat F about getting a blow out and I love being pampered so, I wanted to try it out and treat myself.

When I walked in, I noticed it was an older gentleman that was doing the blow outs. Okay — different, but I thought perhaps he is the hair whisperer or something. Plus, the owner lady told me I was in good hands with Frank. Frank washed my hair — no nice massage. This was my first disappointment. Frank also told me that his hair is similar to mine (fine, limp and greasy) and that he can go 4 days without washing after using these products. I can’t — one of the reasons I get my hair dyed is to dry it out. If I don’t wash my hair every other day, I would be able to change the oil in my car by just bending over the hood.
I digress… As I wanted to see what Frank could do for me, I said do what you like. As the owner of my scalp and hair, I know I need to work my roots to get any volume. Dude didn’t touch the roots. By the time he used a round brush to dry the ends, and then almost gave me 80’s curl under bangs (I have long light bangs that I wear to the side… which he saw when I walked in). After I told him that I wear the hair to the side, he did push them puppies over, but in a horrid way.
He had also said he was going to give me a poof or something at the back. Great I thought, I can handle big volume hair. I have no idea if he was taking something and saw a bump that I didn’t see, but there was no bump. I could have used a bumpit and jazzed it up Texas style myself.
I know I should have said something in the moment, I should have asked for more. But, he was so pleased with himself and proud. I didn’t want to either burst his bubble or perhaps I am way off in what a blow out for my hair should be.
I am going to take Kat F’s suggestion and go to Civello to try again.
