I’ve been looking for a linux desktop and connectors to use with a new monitor. The best deal I found was at Fortune. They gave me a good deal on a customised desktop, put together the machine at no extra cost and gave me a Linux installation disk for me to use later(I didn’t want a Windows desktop.) Their product selection is narrower than Canada Computers but they are less expensive across the board. I’m happy to buy my stuff from them if they have it in stock(buying some of these things on the internet is not worthwhile because of shipping returns hassle.) I paid with credit card(see comment.)

They sold me memory that was different than I asked for, but refunded my purchase the following day after spending 15 minutes looking through boxes of loose RAM sticks for replacements. The other small things(and one WD hard drive, still running after 2 years) that I’ve picked up there have worked without issue.

I’ve found some great deals on cheap cables or accessories, however everything on their shelves looks cheap including the packaging most products are wrapped in. I wouldn’t necessarily trust this place for any big purchases as even a couple times I’ve talked to the staff I’ve had to question their credibility in knowing what they are talking about, but this place has served up some good deals on generic smaller purchases so it at least gets 2 stars for that.

Once a upon a time… a customer walks comes in to this store trying to fix her laptop. Fortune Computers rep recommends to reformat windows and she pays the fee to get it done. One month later… The customer gets and error saying that her windows operating system is not genuine. The customer brings the laptop back to the store asking why the version is not genuine. Fortunate computers denies the customer any knowledge of doing the work even though the customer had the receipt. The end. based on a true story… ;P make your choice if you would do business with Fortune Computers or not…

For what is is(a small computer store, and one of a chain) Fortune Computer is quite good. The selection, service and prices are great, and a bit better than Future Shop or Best Buy. The staff are quite helpful when needed, the store’s located in a great place(College and Spadina) and it even has parking. All of the parts for my computer were bought here, as was the external hard drive I bought today at 4:30 in the afternoon today(July 15). All in all, a good place to buy a computer and computer parts.

Brutal experience here. I wanted to confirm that a wireless keyboard was new in box and the friendly sales clerk confirmed it. I was skeptical as the box was a little damaged and sealed with tape. Again, I asked the person at the register: «is this new?» before I handed over my credit card. She assured me it was a brand new part. Maybe you can see where this is going. When I got the keyboard was missing parts and was certainly not new. As Karl R. mentioned, obtaining a refund is like performing alchemy in places like this, but to their credit the manager granted me one since I was mislead.(And also because I started a near holy crusade at the front of the shop.) I won’t be returning here. Obligatory Title Pun: Most unFORTUNE-ate. Menu Readability: But, but, this is a computer store… I don’t… Need to mention: Seemed like a decent store otherwise. I don’t mind open box items, I just don’t like being lied to. Which I was. Twice. What this place teaches me about myself: I’m not a gambling man, so why did I walk into Fortune Computers?

Not quite as packed as Factory Direct next door, Fortune Computers is always fun to poke around and see what novel Chinese-made computer accessory they have in stock. If you need an iPod charger cable, a USB keyboard, a USB head set, Fortune Computer probably has it and for the lowest price. Also unlike Factory Direct, they focus more on computers, DVD spindles, memory, USB sticks, keyboards etc. They’re not very credit card friendly, mind you. All prices are cash/debit card price. They’ll add 3% if you try to put it on credit. Return policies are typical for the computer joints along this stretch of College street: fergetaboutit. There’s an exchange policy but no cash refunds.
