History

Established in 1994.

The Friendly Stranger borrowed its name from the «Reefer Madness» propaganda that created marijuana prohibition. It was intended to scare people into believing that cannabis is an evil and deadly substance that should be avoided at all costs.

Truth is, this disinformation campaign worked! Prohibition is still in place. Every day we spread the truth about cannabis and work towards dispelling the myths and lies that are ingrained and perpetuated in our society.

It is our intention to reverse the damage caused by this type of disinformation campaign, and to restore cannabis to its rightful place in society: a substance that is recognized as far less harmful and definitely more socially acceptable than alcohol or tobacco.

Upset with the legal issues surrounding Cannabis, we set out to establish a constant voice in favour of Cannabis decriminalization. As activists, it was hard to get our message out and generate an income. While promoting hemp products and spreading the word, we came up with the idea of opening a store where people could come to us to learn about Cannabis and the challenging issues surrounding this valuable plant. What began as a small 200 square foot, second floor space, has blossomed into a full fledged Cannabis Culture Shop in the heart of Toronto’s busiest tourist district, Queen Street West. Our 3000 square foot shop caters to Cannabis Connoisseur’s from around the world. With over 21 Years of Service, we continue to develop and expand our vision as we head towards full-​on Cannabis Legalization in the next couple of years. We appreciate your support and continue to provide the friendliest service available anywhere!
