This isn’t a lawyers office! It’s the best salon and dye job I’ve ever had.
I’ve been back and forth from blonde to my natural dark brown for more than a decade. I’ve had my share of terrible brassy, chunky, unnatural blonde dyes and thought it could never be possible to look expensive with dyed blonde on my hair.
In recovery from a terrible balayage misshap, I was debating whether to mask it all and go back natural or give the blonde another chance. I had a consultation with Carl who said he could fix it and try his best. HE DID IT. Above and beyond!
He understood my vision, that I wanted some root with a natural sun kissed transition to the blonde and to rid the Orange brassiness left from previous color corrections. Carl is a hair God. I’m so thankful I finally found a salon I’m confident to reco and keep going back to as my regular spot.

Moved around here about 6 months ago and been trying to find a decent salon that is not too pricey, and I actually enjoy my hair colour. Right when I walked in my hairdresser Karly, was waiting and took my coat. She was so sweet and showed me all the different hair colours and combinations. I was served coffee and teas thoughout my visit and we were chatting the entire time.
The décor is very fashion forward with a street sign saying «Fashion Ave.» All of the hairdressers were funky and very nice.
I am definitely making this my go to place! So happy with the price and my experience!
Just a tip, go on their website before and check out their hairdressers, they all have a different price range.

I was looking for a new hair salon after I got a bad perm and needed a cut to get rid of my fried hair. I called and got an appointment for the next day with Sean .
Sean was professional and friendly and paid attention to detail. I went from long hair to a bob with bangs and it looks really good .
I will be returning to this salon for sure, also prices are very reasonable.

I love this place! I used to get my hair coloured by Christopher — who is awesome! We recently moved to MTL and there’s no place like this. Please open one here! I miss Jenna and the other friendly staff. And you always leave with a fantastic blow dry :)

Love this place. Took a gamble and won. Carl is amazing. He is so professional and awesome. The whole salon is very professional and has a good layout. Great customer service. The atmosphere in the salon is very cozy and nice too. Often salons can feel a little tense and yucky, but not this one. Highly recommend.

The Negative
I saw Alicia for a haircut and am not pleased with the results. I had long hair that needed a trim and asked for long swooping bangs … What I got was a hair cut that has no cohesiveness — long hair with choppy short pieces at the front that look like I am growing out my bangs. When I told her I was not happy she did not offer any solutions and seemed to only want to cut it shorter… Which I did not allow her to do. The haircut looks bad and is unflattering.
The Positive
The manager was lovely and saw that I was visibly upset and did not charge me for the cut.
I will return and get this mess fixed but will only see Sean.

I’m a guy who doesn’t usually go to salons because I never can seem to book proactively. It usually leaves me to inexpensive and unpredictable barbers who don’t speak English and end up making me look like a serial killer.
With this place, I thought I’d give it a chance since I live right around the corner. I walked in, no appointment one day, and made a funny joke something like «You charge 2x what the Chinese lady does, but can you make me twice as beautiful?» — they laughed but had no openings.
A week later I made an appointment, walk-​in again, for later that afternoon with Hugo. Bonus: they remembered me from the week prior.
After it all I looked good, my head was shiny, the beard was trimmed and shaped well (which is hard for many to do to my satisfaction).
I’ve been two times now and it’s not hard booking and the people seem pleasant.
It does cost TWICE what the Chinese lady charges me, but they did deliver on making me at least TWO TIMES as BEAUTIFUL ;)

What can I say about this salon? I love this place. It is so very important to feel good at a salon that you intend on keeping a long relationship with. I have been searching for ages for a salon and colourist that could take my dark brown hair to blonde. I have been to so many salons and spent hundreds of dollars only to have very disappointing results. I am so grateful to have found this salon and Kristopher. He is amazing at what he does. You wanna go blonde? Go see him, seriously! He listens, is patient and is sweet. Going blond is a process and he will tell you that. Do not expect to be super blonde the first day. Patience here is key and I am on my second set of highlights on the road to blond. The vibe here is very laid back and friendly which is so refreshing.

So my amazing hairstylist left the city and I was on that dreaded hunt to find a replacement. After hearing some good things about John Steinberg, I decided to give it a chance.
I called in and told them that I wanted someone who specialized in cuts, as I do not color my hair. The receptionist happily recommended Sean and scheduled me in.
Sean was amazing! He listened to what I wanted, what I didn’t want, and then executed fabulously. He is super friendly and chill.
I bought one of the products he used on my hair only to later on that evening, get a killer migraine from it (I’m highly sensitive to chemicals). I felt horrible to have to go back and try to return it and totally thought the salon would give me a hard time.
The next morning when I walked in, I immediately saw Sean and told him the situation. The owner who was sitting at the front desk, overheard and was so nice about it. We ended up having a great little chat and I fell even more in love with the salon.
Besides the exceptional service, the whole salon has this laid back, feel-​good vibe, and everyone coming in and coming out has AMAZING hair!
Oh, and did I mention their prices are still super affordable? Make sure to make up for their fair prices by tipping well!

Not welcoming to new clients.

I’ve been here a couple of times and had great experiences every time. I saw Coleen the first time and Brandon the second.
Neither of them have ever washed my hair because they were finishing up with other clients, but the people who’ve washed my hair didn’t do a good job. My hair is super thick and long (almost to my ass). They don’t really get into the scalp and it’s not really clean. But they do give a massage which I love… It’s not long but it’s nice cuz not all places do that. The cuts are always great and Brandon fixed my bangs so they were light and framed my face… My favourite is their patience with styling. Like I said, I have long thick hair… They take the time do round brush and curl my hair. With my thick and straight hair, I’m happy they take the time and do it properly

I finally decided to dye my hair again. I know. Not that adventurous for most women, apparently, but I have dark brown hair that looks black and most of the attempts at highlight/​colour have made me feel like I’m living in a small town where the only hair stylist/​colorist is legally blind.
I’ve had incredible luck using Unilocal for a dramatic hair cut over the last year, so I thought I’d try it again for the colour. I saw Kristopher mentioned as someone who does a magical job turning dark hair into light. And I thought, what the hell. it’s so short I can always dye it back if I look hideous.
At first, when I filled Kristopher in on the look I was going for — providing him a picture of the gorgeous model, Agyness Deyn — he looked worried. No strike that — he looked skeptical and concerned that I was off my head. In a nice way, of course. Kristopher is very lovely.
We talked a bit back and forth and then he brought out the blue goo to bleach my hair and 50 minutes later, I was walking out of there feeling like an MGM starlet from the 1950s. My hair looked like fluffy platinum cotton candy and cream soda. Awesome.
I loved the dramatic look so much that 2 months later, I got the itch again and asked Kristopher to dye it golden red, again thinking ‘this could go very wrong.’. Kristopher had to use different dyes on my hair to colour the dark roots and the lighter platinum tone to achieve a uniform colour. And he did. My head, fortunately, does NOT look like a stick of Neopolitan Ice Cream. Instead, I got the exact look I was going for.
Thanks Kristopher for making me into a total Colour Beast rather than a Jungle Beast.

I have been here twice and LOVE this place. I have been searching around for a good salon forever and have finally found this one. Both times my hair looked amazing. I got a different stylist each time but it didn’t matter they both did a great job. The place is clean, well maintained. They are super professional and make you feel really comfortable. They offer you a got drink while your getting your hair done which is a nice touch. And for the price its pretty reasonable. I paid 60+ tip so it came out to be 75 which i didn’t feel bad about at all. It was definitely worth the money. I will be coming back every three months for a trim!

I’m so bummed. I’ve been going to this salon for a few years now, and I’ve had my hair cut by Sheena all but one of those times when my hair was cut by the late, great John Steinberg himself.
Well, Sheena’s gone — moved away. This was a bummer to discover, but I agreed to see another stylist.
We did not hit it off. She was nice enough, but when I described that I wanted a redux of the short style I’d gotten a couple months earlier which I’d LOVED, she didn’t seem open to it, instead she had a handful of discouraging explanations for why it wasn’t right for me (short hair would be too hot (?) while I was running, my hairline on the back of my neck was too high for a short-​short style).
In the end, the style looked ok when she dried and styled it, but I’ve learned to hate the damn cut since then. Too long, too boring, too shapeless. I look like I’m growing my hair out, and I just had it cut a few weeks ago. Bleah.
I’m going to look elsewhere for a new salon because outside of the charming reception staff, Sheena was the warmest, most welcoming thing I found there and now that she’s gone, the place just leaves me kind of cold.

Decided to come here for a trim and a gloss a couple of months ago, mostly because this salon is located close to home. I didn’t want to spend too much so booked services with a junior stylist. The day of my appointment I received a phone call from the salon letting me know that due to a family emergency my stylist wouldn’t be available. I was given 2 options: reschedule my appointment or I could come in around the same time as my scheduled appointment and be seen by a senior stylist for the price of a junior stylist since that was the service I booked. Needless to say I decided to come in the same day to see a senior stylist.
I was a little worried about the vibe inside the salon since it is located on King West, but was pleasantly surprised by the friendly and professional atmosphere rather than one of pretentiousness. I checked in and was thanked by the reception desk for agreeing to come in and apologized to for the change of plans.
The salon was pretty busy but it seemed that everyone was working efficiently and effectively between the different services that their clients wanted. I was offered a beverage while waiting to meet with my stylist Sharon. I met with Sharon who then briefly went over how I wanted my hair trimmed and what type of gloss we would do and then I was on my way to get my hair washed. The cut, gloss and then styling took just under 2 hrs and Sherri was very friendly and chatty (but not overly).
The prices are reasonable for the location and though I’d probably prefer to pay less,
I had a great experience and will return since it’s in my neighbourhood.

The salon is very laid back, nice reception and quick to take your coat/​offer drink.
Didn’t feel rushed in anyway.
one tip: ask for a towel under your neck when shampooing!

Now THIS is what a salon experience should be like!
Recently I was overcome with the desire to chop off half my (very long and unruly) head of hair. Unfortunately, my favourite hairdresser wasn’t taking appointments until March! My compulsion to cut consumed me so much that I called John Steinberg & Associates (which is located conveniently close to my home) and asked for the next available appointment. The girl on the phone was so friendly and helpful, and I was booked in for later that same afternoon.
As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted warmly, my coat was taken and I was offered a drink. I settled in with a magazine and a cup of hot coffee while I waited for my stylist Alicia to finish up with another client. The atmosphere inside is really warm and inviting, with wooden floors and cute accent pieces.
Alicia made a real effort to ask the right questions to determine what kind of look I was going for. She gave me a lovely scalp massage while washing my hair, and I was in and out of there in under an hour with a great-​looking head of hair. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a change of pace from their regular salon, or those looking for a new go-​to!

Quick review for my hair dresser Alicia! I love John Steinberg salon and not just because of it’s convenient location. They are so friendly in there and it’s always cozy and comfortable whether you’re waiting or getting your hair did.
Alicia does a great job with both cut and colour and I have complete trust in her which is always nice.

This is by far the best salon experience I’ve had.
I went in for full highlights, taking my once almost-​black hair to a dark blonde-​ish.
I had 3 sets of highlights elsewhere, and moved salons because of location. But I am so happy with what I found… Kristopher was super honest about what was possible and what I could expect. And the result far exceeded my expectations — the brassiness I had experienced from my previous sessions of highlights were completely gone — very difficult to pull off when going from nearly black to blonde. In one meeting, we accomplished what I’d spent the last three trying to do. Not only that, it was less expensive than I was expecting to pay. For the results, a bargain.
He taught me about hair products without being remotely pushy — I believe that he really cares about what I’m using on my hair — he is knowledgeable and sincere.
The staff in the salon were awesome — super friendly, kind and normal. Believe it or not, I’ve concluded from TOO many various salon visits that «normal» and cool can be hard to come by!
Finding your go-​to salon is so exciting after jumping around a ton.
Just GO.

I go for Anelise– she’s so friendly and funny. So really, this review is for her, not the hair salon. I think she charges less than most of the stylists in there.
Last time I was there, Geddy Lee was next to me! Wow!

SO if you go… get Anelise. And bring her a sandwich from Reggie’s! Or Craft Burger. Yeah, go to Craft Burger. Reggie’s is worse than Rush.
And the coffee is pretty good.
