I’m not the sort to write about bad experiences at fast food chains because I’m not expecting much when I go to these type of establishments but my recent experience was such that I’ll make an exception this one time. I’m not a UBC student but I was on campus for an event that was being held there. The employees here are so embittered and it comes across with every interaction they have with a customer; they completely turned me off on ever returning. If I’m in the area again, I’ll make the extra 10 minute trek to McDonald’s for my fast food fix in the future thankyouverymuch. These were my issues: 1) I asked for my burger with lettuce instead of a bun and she tried to charge me extra. How can 2 pieces of plain iceberg lettuce cost more than a bun? It isn’t something grand like butter lettuce. There shouldn’t even be a cost to take something out and replace it with another. It wasn’t like I was asking for a burger with an extra bun in which case I would’ve gladly paid the extra charge for the extra bun. 2) She told me I should’ve told her I wanted lettuce before I ordered because now she had to cancel the whole order and they had already made my burger. While I applaud A&W for their efficiency, I was STILL ordering that one combo of a burger with yam fries and root beer. It wasn’t like I had ordered my combo, paid and then come back to ask for lettuce instead of a bun. So don’t be catty and tell me I should’ve told the cashier that before. If this is such an insurmountable obstacle then give me the burger you already made and I’ll take the freaking bun off myself(which I did in the end because she made such a hoo-ha of deleting the order and redoing the burger.) 3) Upon receiving my onion rings, I found it sadly lacking in ANY seasoning salt. When I asked for some, she grabbed the package without a word, smile, nod, or ANY sort of acknowledgement to my presence, walked to the kitchen and practically threw the bag back at me. I said«Thank you very much» but it definitely wasn’t what I wanted to say. 4) I FINALLY sat down to eat my hard fought for food to find that the onion rings were also cold. By this time, I just didn’t care to come back and witness her appalling attitude AGAIN. She would probably spit in my rings if I did. I don’t think my expectations are extreme. I wanted hot food with one simple modification. Perhaps her standards are just lower and she thinks she can get away with it because they’re located on a university campus and she knows she’ll get business no matter how irritating she is when students are desperate for cheap, convenient food. But does she also realize that her behaviour affects how other A&Ws are perceived? I will boycott this restaurant forever and tell others to do the same.
