This is one of my favorite sushi spots in Vancouver. The restaurant itself looks a bit outdated, but that’s part of the charm. The food is always really fresh and VERY reasonably priced. An ample meal for two will only run about $ 20.00 quick and friendly service is the icing on the cake.

The lady is super nice, but the sushi is terrible. The deep fried style roll was very chewy and soggy. We’ve been twice because of the reviews, but wouldn’t bother again. Both times the sushi was terrible. 2 starts only because they are nice.

I love this place. Sweet, quaint little restaurant with a very friendly lady. Reasonably priced sushi, with a wide selection of rolls to try

Aoki has been one of my family’s favorite sushi places among the plethora of «budget sushi places» along Broadway. The menu is huge and the prices are very reasonable. They have tons of maki combos that give you a lot of bang for your buck. They have a decent selection of hot dishes and I do like the ohitashi here. The tempura is well done. One thing I love — you can order all of one veggie if you want — like all sweet potato tempura. Give me that! This is not a very big place — it holds about 20 people max. Many people are getting take out when we’re here. Sadly, quality has slipped slightly since the ojiisan(grandpa) who was in charge of the kitchen disappeared about 3 years or so ago. He used to liven up the place and sometimes sing a little song, yell greetings to customers. Now it is very quiet. The lady who runs the front of house is very, very sweet. If you need a cheap sushi fix — this is still a safe bet. But not my first choice anymore.

Really bad sushi. Had the BC roll, almost threw up. Maybe the fish is stale. Very little seafood in the actual rolls. Won’t ever return.

This is the worst sushi I’ve ever eaten. We ordered a rainbow roll and the nigiri combo. The fish was chewy. I’ve tasted grocery store sushi that was better. Please never eat here.

First visit and prompted by an urge for good take out sushi and the feedback on this particular restaurant. I was not disappointed: The sushi was ready on time and delicious. Everything fresh; including the uni and at a price comparative to the so-so competitors. Definitely worth the drive across town!

In one word: TERRIBLE. What a joke for a Sushi restaurant. Sorry to say it by why do people of other nationalities, Vietnamese and Korean who have wonderful cuisine always think that they can make another specific nationalities food? I mean how do you burn edamame, turn gyoza into shoe leather, and cut sashimi like it was cardboard is beyond me. Dana Lynch, the Vancouver Expert should quit eating at Macdonalds and go to some countries so she has any expertise.

I saw all the good reviews and wanted to try it out for myself. It was ok. The fish tasted nice. Service was a bit slow though and the fish were not cut neatly. lots of weird shapes and sizes for sushi. And i payed a tad bit more than i would’ve liked, especially for the quality. it’s an ok place, don’t get me wrong. just not so great. definitely lots of better sushi in vancouver.

As others have noted — there’s new ownership, and it’s now crappy. Avoid.

Shiro was closed over the long weekend so we were stuck searching for sushi options in the area. Went to Aoki at my friend’s suggestion since no one had a better idea. Total fail — anything else would have been better, in my opinion. Twenty bucks down the drain… Ordered the house roll and appetizer sashimi; my buds got a chirashi, some mango dragon-type of roll, plus another maki. All I can say is that was some of the worst sushi I have ever had, akin to the all-you-can-eat variety but at a-la-carte prices. The rice was not seasoned as sushi rice should be, and NONE of the fish was fresh, with that being all the more glaring for the chirashi. That sashimi looked like it had been sitting in the refrigerator for at least a week. Tamago? There was nothing real about that egg — it was just some artificial sweetened mix with yellow food colouring with no hint of even simulated egg flavour. Pretty much lost my appetite halfway through. Forced the rest down despite being nowhere near full. Can’t stand wasting food… The place appeared to be run by a husband/wife team, with the husband as the sushi chef and the wife serving the dining room. Really hate dumping on a small operation like this but honestly, there is no way Aoki would be a tolerable repeat.

OK I finally I found a place that I can give in good conscious two stars. I go here for time to time for lunch take out. The Restaurant has trouble filing my order about half the time I go there. The business was taken over by a new management team over the last year. Although I never gotten sick from the food at Aoki Sushi I just don’t find it very good at times. OK here the real question way I go back from time to time? It allows me the opportunity to take a short walk at lunch time and I still remember when the place was better. So although I don’t really recommend the place I don’t think it should be avoided at all costs either

Medium-size Resto just off Burrard/Broadway, close to Kinko’s. Décor won’t wow you but food’s good. Ordered the Pink Godzilla roll, though depends on season of strawberry. A weird mix at initial thought, but yummy. And just the right amt of spicy tuna. Tuna & sockeye salmon don wasn’t cheap at close to $ 12 but still worth 2 meals. Since I just ate at Ikura, still prefer Ikura… They deliver themselves.

Definitely under new management. Used to be decent sushi. Now it’s umm not so decent. Well I would be ok with it if I got it at a 7 – 11 but yeah nopes. Not good. It sucks to have to say negative things about new management but hopefully they are just learning the ropes and things will get better.

WARNING! New management, big fail. Now, the fish isn’t fresh, the food has lost its delicate authentic nature, service is ridiculously slow, and I’m starting to feel nauseous after the meal. Unfortunately I pre-bought 2 meal coupons deals, might just toss the second one though because I really don’t want to return. The old family owned place used to be my favourite Japanese restaurant in the city… it’s a MAJOR loss that they’ve changed so drastically.

I wanted to go to Ajisai but because it was Canadian Thanksgiving the nex day, they were closed. I tried to call a few other places but they were also closed. Apparently all Japanese owned restaurants close the day before Thanksgiving. Aoki(which is Chinese owned) was one of the only ones open. When we got there, I vaguely remembered going there 4 years ago with my friends and it seemed okay back then. I didn’t feel like eating a lot so I ordered nigiri: toro, salmn, hotate and ikura. The toro was okay, not as buttery as I remembered it, salmon was fresh but hotate was still a bit frozen. The major dissapointment was the ikura. It had a fishy taste and gummy texture; after the first bite I put the nigiri down and couldn’t eat any more. I had to eat a piece of gum afterwards to get the fishy taste out of my mouth. We also ordered chirashi and it had large basic cuts of hamachi, salmon, maguro, tamago, aji, ebi, etc but it also came with shitakke mushrooms with teriyaki sauce and avocado. Avocado? Is this some sort of California chirashi that I wasn’t aware of?! I really wanted to like Aoki. Service was good but I think it’s good for those who want big cuts of mediocre quality fish and odd combinations. I was really disappointed that I wasn’t able to get decent sashimi in Vancouver but I guess that’s for the next trip.

Last Friday my bf and I wanted to go somewhere walking distance for dinner. I had once ordered take-out from here but had never sat down to eat. We walked in(no reso) and were immediately seated. I did notice that there were a few tables reserved. Everyone greeted us which was nice! A hostess quickly brought us tea while we looked at the menu. They have a really great selection! A ton of standards with a bunch of original creative selections as well. We had some rolls, miso soup, gomae, and chicken karagae(sp?). The food was sooo fresh and yummy! The service was also fantastic. Everyone was very friendly and the food was prepared so quickly!

This place went from our usual easy sushi haunt to a fond memory over the course of a week this past Summer. The last I saw of Aoki-san was on a Saturday night when he looked oddly out of place and when I was back the following Wednesday — I was told by the server that he had retired. I’ve been back 3 times since and the new owners have made too many little changes that made Aoki what it was — including the quality of the food. Good luck to Aoki-san with his Pikachu mask and his charming wife Hideko if they open up a new place. Otherwise, I hope they enjoy their retirement — Jim-san

My bf showed up at work one day with a huge platter to surprise everyone… so much tasty fish. Next time my boss wanted sushi for us he went out of his way to pick up an assortment from Aoki, and again it was right on the money. He added to the mix a spicy scallop roll that has become a new fav of mine. I like that there’s always something new on the menu(pumpkin rolls for Hallowe’en were yummy) and always great deals. Super fresh sashimi too.
