This was the closest Korean restaurant where I lived and I was ecstatic to see it open up. The place was very simple and homey. It’s run by a small family who were all kind and welcoming. The interior isn’t incredibly fancy, but has nice informational posters about the various benefits certain foods had. I thought that was pretty nice. Not a lot of places can really do that. They’re also awesome conversation starters. Onto the food~ My friend and I always order kimchi jjigae and both the bulgogi and chicken Bulgogi and they are soooo good. The beef bulgogi comes with japchae underneath and is exceptionally savoury and delicious. Whereas the chicken bulgogi had veggies and a really nice smoky BBQ taste. The kimchi jjigae is not too painfully spicy and not too bland, just right in my case. The serving sizes are very generous which means more to take home without paying for more. Another good thing to try is their spicy rice cakes or dukkbokki. The family is quick to serve and if you ever forget anything, they run after you to give it to you. Which I think is above and beyond awesome. Overall, I wish I could come here more often.

This is a really funny little place. Another hole-in-the-wall at Killarney Centre that was way different than I expected. My boyfriend and I assumed it was what used to be the«pizza» place that’s still advertised on Killarney’s sign because the inside is like a 70s Italian family restaurant. There’s brown cracked leather, mirrored walls, and wood panelling everywhere. The TV played a PSA for Korean food with subtitles on a loop and JRFM was blasting the entire time. This kind of laid back vibe usually means the food is going to be really, really good. The servers were super kind and the food was GREAT! I ordered the chicken deobap and my man ordered some kind of beef and egg hot pot. Both were delicious, filling, fresh tasting, and I couldn’t help but notice, super healthy. I didn’t get that greased-out feeling I sometimes do when eating out. I noticed they have a very affordable lunch special so I will definitely be heading back in the near future.

Good place for dinner. Would come back, but probably to check out the lunch specials. Tried to go one time on a Wednesday but it was closed.

Was never a big fan of Columbus Pizza when they were here so I was elated to see that a new business had moved in! The Korean family that runs the joint is very friendly and attentive. The food’s a bit on the greasy side but is mighty tasty for sure! I’ve a soft spot for small family owned joints, so this is probably my new go-to place for Korean food!

Hansik is an awesome restaurant. I don’t eat in-house so I cannot comment on the atmosphere, but the quality of the food is top notch and I have no complaints about the service. The entire family is happy to see me and wish me well each time I leave. I usually order a «Regular D1», which is a non-spicy version of their beef deopbap. The beef can sometimes be a little stringy, but is typically great. The lettuce and rice, though, are perfect. It’s so simple, but so delicious. Very reasonably priced, too. Less than $ 10 even with a 15% tip and you are quite filled at the end of the meal. No complaints. A recommendation is to perhaps add a little more customization options, but I wouldn’t know what to include even if they did. Simple, cheap, and tasty. A no-brainer to give Hansik at least one decent try.

I had similar experience as Stephanie W. since I ordered pretty much the same food items as her and her dining partner. My mother and I came here and shared a beef & seafood Sundubu and Japchae. Aside from«disintegrating shrimps» I couldn’t find any other seafood. I think there was enough soft tofu. However, my BIGGEST problem with the Sundubu is that the restaurant used«seafood powder» so the broth was artificially brine-y but totally lacked the truth depth of flavor you would other wise get from broth made from scratch. The«seafood-powder-MSG» taste lingered on my tongue well into dinner time despite my futile effort of trying to brush/rinse my mouth as soon as I arrived home. I was cursing uncontrollably in the back of my head, but then I saw the hard-working, friendly looking elder couple who ran the restaurant, my heart softened. As for the Japchae, the sauce was VERY sweet. Flavor was homey but again, like Stephanie W.‘s experience, the dish«noticeably lacked beef». The portion was plenty and generous. Most likely won’t come back.

I may have gone in with higher expectations than I should have. My impression/assumption is that things have gone downhill since they opened last year… Onto the food! I ordered a seafood Sundubu(tofu) soup and my friend had the japchae. I found it fairly off-putting that the seafood in my Sundubu was actually just four or five very small disintegrating shrimp. They were so small that it was nearly impossible to get the shells off(mostly because they were disintegrating and the shell was coming off in bits and pieces), and when you did, you realize that the shrimp was so shrivelled that the size resembled the dry shrimp that you buy as a cooking ingredient. By the third one, I was contemplating giving up on the shrimp altogether. Top it off, the soup didn’t have enough flavour and had less tofu than I was used to. It was very disappointing. I had a taste of my friend’s japchae and the flavour tasted good! But it was noticeably lacking in beef. Overall a disappointing experience…

Tried take out at this small restaurant in the Killarney Plaza, while at Starbucks. I was craving Korean food and it is the closest place(not many options in the area). Ordered the Jap Chae, pancake, and beef /rice dish. They give 3 side dishes with the take out as well. The pancake was a little bit soggy but still quite good. The Jap Chae is very good but limited meat, and the beef /rice dish was ok. It is not as cheap as Chinese restaurants, each dish is about $ 15. I was impressed The 2nd time we did take out, we only ordered 2 dishes. I noticed the side dishes were less, in 2 containers instead of 3, and there was barely any beef in the Jap Chae. I was less impressed. Hmmm, I will have to go back to see which of these 2 experiences is more common. I hope it is the 1st. Lots of parking. It is very hot inside the restaurant, so we waited outside for our take out. Doesn’t seem to get very busy at all.

The food here at Hansik seems to be legit Korean and are quite family friendly. Definitely a hidden gem in the Killarney area.

Good little neighbourhood Korean place buried in the corner of the Killarney Plaza(i think it’s a plaza) beside Killarney market. Prices are good, the food is delicious, and service is surprisingly quick for a little place like this. Good korean food all around, the tofu soup and the BBQ beef and other authentic korean dishes are pretty good. Not opened Wednesdays however, and if you are into burning your own meat, they don’t have that as they burn it on your behalf. Definitely will go back as it is pretty close to my place and the prices are pretty darn good

I have little experience with Korean food, so it’s hard to speak to whether the food here is good relative to other Korean restaurants, but the soup hit the spot and I enjoyed it, and the restaurant is full so that says something. There were however a couple of problems with the meal. 1) For some reason there were no napkins available apart from on the one I was administered, would have been nice to be able to reach for another to wipe my fingers which were messy from trying to eat the 2) whole shrimp that were in my soup even though I asked for beef(not beef and seafood which was the other option). 3) by the end of the meal I was really craving that tea refill I asked for at the start of the meal but didn’t receive. Not really an enjoyable enough experience to bother coming back.

I’m new to the neighbourhood and just moved to the area a few weeks ago and I’ve been to Hansik 3x already. I love Korean food especially pork bone soup. Great flavour and the meat is tender and falls off the bone! Perfect meal for a rainy Vancouver day. The only drawback is that for the price($ 10.95) there’s only 2 – 3 pieces of pork bone in the soup. Usually when I’m done eating pork bone soup, the bones are piled high… this one not so much… otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. My bf had the marinated beef in rice with lettuce… so good! At $ 6.99 for the big bowl that we ended up sharing, this one is a good bargain… I think I’ll get this one next time. The little appetizers that come before the meal are awesome. Service is very fast and the people are friendly. Lots of tasty looking things on the menu that I have yet to try. I’m sure I’ll get through all of them eventually!

Came here last Friday night with a friend since we were craving Korean food. How did we find this place, considering it’s in a relatively hidden location, you ask? Simply looked up «Korean» + my postal code and BAM we found Hansik with a 4.5 rating based off 3 reviews. With relatively high hopes for this hidden gem, I was eager to give this place a shot. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a restaurant that was as good as empty(surprising considering a Friday night). From the looks of it, Hansik should be a family owned restaurant and I’m always up for supporting local family operated businesses. The restaurant was well lit and had a very homie feel to it. We ended up ordering a dish of spicy rice cakes(the rice cakes could have been softer and less sauce would have been nice) and a plate of BBQ Pork(which was really good). Combined, we paid just under $ 25(after taxes and tips). A few parties came in after 8pm so the restaurant wasn’t completely deserted(yay!). I’d say Hansik is more 3.5 stars than 4 stars, but because they are a smaller business and word of mouth is absolutely critical to them, I think they deserve that extra half a star so people would give them a try.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant before and the first feeling you experience is the cozy nature that is a family business? Hansik definitely gave me that feeling. From the Special menu written with colored sharpie, to the simple décor, and the father/mother couple in the kitchen, this is definitely a family business. I visited this slightly hidden restaurant with a friend later last night after reading the reviews before me. We were greeted by a young man, which I presume to be their son. After settling down, we ordered a BBQ platter and a platter of noodles. The food was decent as it wasn’t as over spiced or salted compared to other Korean BBQ places I’ve been to. The bill was just over $ 20 for 2 people, which is definitely good. To add to our experience, as we were eating there were a constant stream of people coming into the restaurant even at around 8:30pm. Overall the experience was good and we would remember this place if we’re ever craving Korean dishes around that area.

This place is a hidden gem that is tucked away at the corner of Killarney mall. It is run by a Korean family. They start with Korean side dishes– often kimchi, sweet potatoes and pickles radishes– very yummy additions to any meal. My fave is the Japchae with potato noodles. It is served on a hot plate that is big enough to feed two. Another favourite is the chicken deopnoodle. It is served hot and ready to go– as a quick but full meal or just something nice and warm at the end of a cold night. On the walls are recommendations to a chicken congee or Dakjuk. I have yet to try it and I am thinking it won’t be long before I do as I just love congee. This place is a hole in the wall but so worth it when you try it. I am a quick regular now as it is close to home and closes quite late– 9pm, as I recall. Price is very reasonable too! But back to the food… Yummy!!!

While there are a plethora of Korean places located further east in Burnaby, this little gem in East Van is well worth a visit. I came here with the girlfriend for a weekday dinner and we had the japchae on rice and the barbecue platter, a new addition to the menu. Before our orders came out, we were served several Korean side dishes, all of which were very well executed. The kimchi was definitely home made and the typical sweet potato dish had a nice garnish of sesame seeds. On to the main dishes: Japchae(Potato Noodles) Served Over Rice — 4/5, Very well done with just the right flavour and texture in the noodles. Could have been a larger portion but they also have it in a platter size. Barbecue platter — 3/5, Well seasoned and tender but a bit too greasy for my tastes. Service was good and the family that runs the place is very polite in typical Korean fashion. Pricing was very affordable as well, a dinner for two under $ 30 is more than possible. Overall, it’s a great addition to the Killarney neighbourhood.

Don’t let its location fool you, this place is a real treat! Hidden away in the corner of the Kilarney Market strip-mall on 49th and Elliot, this place has wonderful food. The décor is simple but the server was lovely and very polite. The food is well portioned, balanced and seasoned just right. I tried the Beef Deopbap(«traditionally marinated beef slices and fresh vegetables over steamed rice») and my boyfriend had the Bulgogi(«beef that is sliced, seasoned, and barbequed in a Korean style»). Both were wonderful. The Beef Deobap was thinly sliced beef with a soft, almost smokey flavour mixed with thinly sliced red peppers and carrots on a bed of lettuce and rice. The texture of the beef with the lettuce and rice was a pleasant surprise and perfectly filling. The Bulgogi was a slightly richer flavour, almost like a sweet gravy, but not quite, difficult for me to describe. It was on a bed of potato noodles, something I’d never heard of, which held the flavour of the Bulgogi nicely and had a similar texture to rice noodles. Part way through our meal, one of the chefs came out with a desert for us to try, on the house. It was a scoop of red bean paste on the bottom and vanilla ice-cream on top with what tasted like some tapioca candies on top. The combination was great together, very light in flavour, the ice-cream added just the right amount of sweetness to the red bean paste and the red bean paste added a more interesting texture to the ice-cream. A great treat to enjoy at the end of your meal without feeling like you’re over-indulging in something too rich. The price point is excellent, my dish was $ 7 and my boyfriend’s was $ 14(because his was a platter). Normally when we go out it’s $ 30-$ 40 for the two of us, so having this place right down the street from us and only paying $ 22 for dinner for two will definitely have us coming back for more, and often! All in all, healthy, delicious food at a great price! I have never left a place so completely content from the food I just ate but I left this place feeling really happy for the rest of the evening. :)
