This place is very unique and authentic northern Chinese cuisine. Courteous and prompt staff accentuates the tasty and hot food. Beware of the single looping song though…

A hidden gem in plain view! Conveniently located next to the Park cinema, this Northern Chinese noodle house features a chef serious about flavour and freshness, who’s thankfully easy on the oil. Three meals in and each has been satisfying in different ways; noodle fanciers will appreciate the spicy and brothful dandan noodles. If pea tips are available, get them! They’re pricey and mouth-wateringly good. Large menu, so lots to discover each time.

Horrible experience. Service was terrible and very slow. When the food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. The spring rolls and potato rolls were very very greasy. The hot & sour soup was pretty good but the sweet corn soup very bland & tasteless. Mapo tofu and Kung pow chicken were just ok. The worst part was the service. I had bought a groupon. After the horrible experience, the lady actually had the nerve to tell me and made a fuss saying that I should tip 20% on the original menu price and that it is the norm in Vancouver. Demanding loudly for 20% tip for horrible experience is norm? I don’t think so. AVOID!!! I would give no star if it’s possible.

Stumbled across this place by accident. It’s in the same block as NewTown Bakery. Small place with great good. The beef roll is great(very similar to Peaceful’s version, for those familiar). If you like spicy, the Dan Dan Noodles are really delicious. I wasn’t blown away by the Dim Sum(but only tried one kind). Will definitely return to sample more of the menu.

Friendly staff, quick and prompt service with the freshest best Chinese food I have experienced. Fresh handmade noodles are top notch. Been there over 5 times in a short period of time and have been with groups of up to 15 people. Every dish was delicious and enjoyed by everyone. Give this place a try, you won’t regret it!

Enjoyed sampling a variety of dishes, all of which tasted great. The cilantro salad really stood out. Will definitely be returning!

I recently had a very poor experience with this restaurant. I went to their website and was excited to see that I could order online so that my boyfriend could pick up the food on his way home. I ordered two dishes online(a rice dish and a sauce noodle) and a confirmation page came up that my order was successful and that the restaurant would call me in 15 – 30 mins to confirm my order. Please note that there was no option to pay online; I assumed this would be done when the order was picked up. Anyway, I waited 15 mins and still no call from the restaurant. I decided to call them on their phone number listed on their webpage, and the phone number went straight to voicemail — although, there wasn’t even a «beep» so you couldn’t even leave a message. I waited another 15 minutes and tried calling again — same thing, went straight to voicemail without the beep. By this point, it was after 30 minutes and my boyfriend had already arrived at the restaurant to pick up our food to which the server indicated that they did not receive any order. He showed them the confirmation page I received and they had no record of such an order on their system. You would think that with a faulty website and a non-working phone number, Meishan Dong Po would’ve apologized and done everything they could to prepare the order as soon as possible. However, this was not the case — they took no fault in having a broken communication system nor did they offer any sort of customer service to resolve the issue. My boyfriend left the restaurant without the food nor any consolation. I remained at home with an empty belly and a face full of frustration! You would think for 2016, a restaurant would at the very least, have either a properly working website that allows you to order food(especially if there’s a confirmation page at the end of the order) or even a working telephone number. Meishan Dong Po had neither of the most basic methods of technology nor even a taste of customer service. And for that reason, I am out.

I don’t know where to start. We ordered soup dumplings, don po fried rice, and green onion beef. All of the orders came extremely late. The kitchen probably messed up our order as our food arrived 40mins after. The first thing that arrived was the soup dumplings. This is probably the worst soup dumplings I had in Vancouver. The skin of the dumplings was so thick. The pork inside the dumplings was overlooked so there was no «soup» at all. The second dish, green onion beef, came after. It was ok but the dish was quite greasy. The final dish, don po fried rice, came after 20mins when the first two dishes arrived. I think the kitchen forgot that we ordered the fried rice. We knew that the chief rushed the fried rice as it was oily and wet. Overall, this place is a disappointment and for sure I will never come again. The price and food quality are just not worth it in that area as there are many better choices.

Tried three things on my first visit: dan dan noodles, beef rolls, and xiao long bao(soup dumplings). The noodles were decent. Noodles were al dente. Not as peanut-y or sesame-y as I’m used to for dan dan but the flavor was good. Salty but not overly salty. Had a nice sichuan pepper heat to it but not too spicy. Good amount of meat and spinach. Could’ve had more soup(in my opinion) because the noodles sucked it all up when you mix everything together. I would go back for the noodles. I saw another table order the cumin lamb noodles and they looked and smelled good. Will try that next time. Beef rolls were good. The pancake had a nice crispiness to it. Beef could’ve used a bit more spice. It was there in texture but not in taste. But still pretty decent. Would order it again. Xiao long bao were kind of a disaster. Don’t order them here. They did not seem freshly made. Some of the skins were already punctured when they came so the soup had leaked. The ones that were still intact still did not have much soup in them. The meat was a tight ball and did not melt apart. Flavor was okay. Go to Long’s for xlb. Décor is clean and more upscale(i.e. table cloths and nice paintings on the wall) than the other northern/shanghai noodle places on broadway(peaceful and shaolin). It’s a smaller place than the others but there are bigger round tables that can seat up to probably 6 – 8 people. There were two waiters when I went: one who spoke english and took the orders and another who did not speak english very well. Service was okay though. Was not a problem getting their attention when I needed something. Overall, I would say it’s a better version of Peaceful/Shaolin. A similar menu with about the same prices but more upscale in terms of décor and bigger portions. Food is less salty than Peaceful and less oily than Shoalin.

Went to this restaurant with a Groupon. Restaurant was really clean, including the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Table clothes, cups, dishes, chopsticks, all exceptionally crisp & clean which I don’t normally experience in a Chinese Restaurant. Waitress was friendly and refilled my cup with tea. I actually enjoyed the tea because it actually tasted like tea! Some restaurants just use the same tea leaves or tea bags, that it only tastes like boiled water! Food: Spicy food was so-ooo spicy! The waitress explained that it could be toned down but still too spicy for me. However, some people like theirs super spicy; so can’t please them all, right? Wood ear appetizer — Delish! Spicy Cucumber — refreshing but you have to like spicy. Soups: hot & sour soup, good. Sweet corn soup — very Delish! Spring rolls — crispy & yummy. Potato roll — too carby and too sweet for me. Cumin Beef — good but felt the portion seemed small. I looked at other people’s table and their dishes seemed bigger. I don’t think they had Groupon Spicy pork chop — a bit bony but was good and just enough spice for me. Rice $ 1.50 fair price 5 stars for a very clean crisp restaurant. I felt good and relaxed while at the restaurant. Service attentive for an Asian restaurant. Food was delicious Lost stars because I felt the main dishes seemed smaller than other peoples, due to Groupon? or maybe it was all in my mind and I didn’t seem to see value. I might try the restaurant again for their noodles and dumplings.

I’ve been to this restaurant 3 times this week alone. Needless to say, I had good experience but my last visit was totally disappointing. In my first 2 visits, I ordered mainly dim sum and noodle soup. My 3rd time I decided to order one of the the main course item Chive Chicken Leg. The menu did not say it was extremely spicy. Well, I could hardly take a third bite. Also, it was not chicken leg but chicken back with not much meat. I complained to the waitress why the dish does not match the menu. She apologized and gave me a 10% discount when the bill came. That did not make me feel better because I felt being cheated. They should have given me a full refund on that dish, or take the chicken back to the kitchen. Throughout the meal, I complained 3 times but she said that there might be translation error on the menu. The item does not have a hot chilly symbol beside it. Is that a translation error??? The English stated clearly that it should be a chicken leg. But there is no thigh or drumstick.

This new Northern Chinese Restaurant has a nice ambience to it — the tablecloths and artistic touches are quite nice. There is a window to see into the sparkling kitchen where they make noodles! Quite a large menu(though not a lot of Vegetarian options to clarify) I ordered the Hot and Sour soup which was spot on and their house special Stir fried noodles with Seafood and Pork — very good flavors though it could be served a little hotter. It is exciting to have more places in this style and I will be back to see how things come along.

whoops– thought nobody had reviewed this place yet so wrote my review here: VVV Came here with high expectations. This neighbourhood would really benefit from a Northern Chinese restaurant. But it seems like this place isn’t up to snuff, or at least you could walk down 10 blocks to Peaceful for much better food at a better price point. Ordered 3 things– classics to try for Northern food: 1) Dan Dan noodles– came in a soup instead of a sauce. The soup had a good spice but the noodles were overdone, soggy and the dish itself was reminiscent of just an average taiwanese noodle place 2) Beef roll– this was actually fairly good. no complaints. I like Peaceful’s beef roll equally though 3) Xiao Long Bao– XLB– This was really bad. No soup in the dumplings and tasted like I could have done equally as well from the frozen section at the grocery. The worst part about this restaurant is the service. it was REALLY off. We were the only ones there, at a newly opened restaurant, you’d think they would be attentive. 1) They didn’t provide bowls or spoons– we had to ask for them and when we asked they seemed VERY confused. Look, spoons are standard for a soup noodle dish and XLB. And how are you going to eat soup noodles on a plate??? Made no sense. 2) They didn’t refill tea and the server had asked us, «What? What do you want?» 3 times after we said«Tea» repeatedly. There was no language barrier– she just wasn’t thinking about service. They also use tea bags– not tea leaves 3) For a Northern Chinese place that pegs itself as a little fancier(table cloths and English tea-wear) I’m surprised their service isn’t better. Chinese Northern restaurants of this type… the service is typically very on point because Northerners tend to have very high expectations of service. Overall a confusing and disappointing experience. Go to Peaceful instead: …

The noodles are fantastic! It’s great having a restaurant in the neighbourhood that’s not afraid to put a little extra chili in your food too. While some of the dishes we had were a bit on the salty side(vegetable hotpot), the noodles have consistently impressed. Service needs some work, but since they just opened a couple weeks ago they’ve still got some kinks to work through. When it’s a full house, food may come later than you wish, so come early! I’ll be back here in a few weeks to see how things develop.

Not for vegetarians, though it might be fine for meat eaters. We were excited to have a new noodle restaurant open closer to our house. Ordered food for pick up, making sure they understood that we were vegetarian, and clarifying the order again before hanging up. In the end, we didn’t get the dishes we ordered, and everything was swimming in chicken broth. Very disappointing.

Recently opened, it’s a bit of mix of Northern Chinese/Shanghai/Sichuan style cuisine. Throw in some Shanxi style as well. It’s basically like a better version of Peaceful Restaurant. Hand pulled noodles in variety of styles with soups and sauces. The classic northern chinese dishes are all here. I found it a bit too oily for my taste. The stir-fried cumin lamb noodles was excellent. Others liked the jajang noodles and the mapo tofu. The pork hock is only available at dinner time. They also have lunch specials on weekdays for about $ 8. Portions can be very large for the price. My party of 5 paid $ 80 including tax and tip for a very full meal. Service was friendly but slightly less competent than I expected. I assume because they just opened and are still finding their bearings. For example, they forgot a dish. And they were a bit slow to fill water or remove dishes. They had a tendency to seat tables of customers right next to each other rather than evenly distribute the space. I think they mean well, but aren’t quite working like a well-oiled machine yet. The kitchen looked super clean and orderly, which was impressive. My table was disappointed by the xiao long bao though. They put too many in one bamboo basket so the skins touched. Even worse, the skin was too fragile and broke easily, so that we lost the soup for every single one. It looks like they still need to finetune the dough for the appropriate level of strength.
