History

Established in 2001.

Vera’s Burger Shack began as a beach concession at Dundarave Pier in West Vancouver in 1977 under the watchful eye of Vera and her husband Frank. Vera prided herself on serving fresh, delicious, homemade food. She had a passion for looking after the people who would come down to the beach, sometimes daily, to get one of her tasty burgers.

As Vera and Frank got older, they decided to temporarily hand over day-​to-​day operations to their granddaughters while Vera searched for the perfect candidate to carry on the Vera’s Burger Shack legacy into the new millennium. Enter Gerald Tritt, a family friend, and no stranger to a great hamburger.

Gerald took over concession operations in 2000 with a promise to continue to build on the legend that began with Vera and Frank. Noah Cantor, another professed burger aficionado, partnered with him a year later to craft a burger experience all about fresh, delicious, homemade food in a friendly, comfortable environment. So this was my first experience at Vera’s.
First off, I ordered the taco bowl with chicken, which was pretty tasty. Although I didn’t know it was going to come with tortilla chips on the side, as opposed to a tortilla bowl. It was kind of a bummer lol.
My friend ordered burger and fries which she really enjoyed. The fries were so good. I couldn’t stop picking at her food!
The bummer was that the refillable pop was so flat.
I like the casual ambiance of thier booths. It was a nice place to hang out on my lunch break. I’m definitely going back… just not getting any pop.

Great location around the corner from Kitsalano beach. Food was prepared to order. I got the burrito bowl. Flavorful and good portion. Hubs got tacos and he was pleased. Prices good. Friendly staff.

Great food. We went the taco and burrito route and we’re not disappointed. I had two kit’s beach tacos. They were huge and tasted amazing! I’m a big guy and thought I’d needed to order a third but two was plenty. Great flavors too. My wife had a burrito bowl and it beat anything else we’ve had. I’d have given it five stars but the place could use a little sprucing up. It was a slow night and some tables still needed cleaning and prettying all of them needed wiped down.

This is the best Vera’s location of them all, you won’t see me devouring a Vera burger any where else.

This is a combo value/​taste review.
Prices are creeping up. $ 7 for a burger plus $ 5 for sides and a drink. YIKES!
So instead I went for the burrito offering. Probably better for me anyways.
My gold standard for burritos is Budgies Burritos. So I’m comparing Vera’s burrito to Budgies.
Veras size is pretty decent, comparable to Budgies for the same price, and this is out in Kits, so I consider the value to be really really good.
The taste isn’t quite there though. It’s a little thin in comparison. The wrapping is good, but it seems like they’re missing a bit on some sort of flavour with spices, or butter, or oil or cheese.
However, for $ 7 in Kits, great. I’d rather have two of these than a Vera Burger with fries and a drink.

Vera’s has always been a go-​to for a good burger, but I haven’t really gone for a burger in a while. On my last visit I noticed that they changed their menu. The organic burger has been replaced by the ‘natural’ burger (I hate greenwashing like that. Cows are pretty natural.) and they don’t have their ‘usual suspects’ or ‘works’ or ‘cool works’ listed anymore. They’ve shortened their menu it seems and the ice cream challenge appears to be gone as well. They used to have photos on the walls of people eating massive burgers — that’s gone too. Maybe I just cant handle change.

No doubt the original location is cool, but the trendiest, what else, in Kits.
By the beach in the summer, great place for their milkshakes too.
though limited parking, I chance it in the alley right beside it.
cool seating, an L shape table at the front, and some bar table seating too.
Chocolate milkshake’s a winner, but pass on the banana.

ok maybe it’s my vegetarian perspective on it. but still. the veg burger is just ok and nothing special. adding feta cheese made it super expensive too. so wouldn’t do that next time.
my biggest disappointment was in milkshakes. the blackberry milkshake tasted nothing like blackberries but just like a vanilla with pieces of blackberry seeds. booooaring. not satisfactory. also no patio.

They have a nice veggie burger. I was pleased, and the atmosphere and service are good. Although, they forget our order of poutine. Overall, I had a nice lunch for a reasonable price. They also have a helper who assists with bringing all the food to the tables, and he was very friendly to us.

A new classic in Kits. Burgers and hot dogs are exactly the way they should be made. You can customize the toppings but nothing too fancy. The interior is not perfect but there is one screen to watch TSN highlights while you wait for your order. I prefer to call in my order and take away, to the beach, etc. During the peak Kits Beach season this place is packed!

Have you ever been eating something with a group of people and you had to attempt to discreetly spit it out in a napkin since it was so gross and STALE?
Well, I got to experience this yesterday with Vera’s «catered» meal! Gross. I don’t even know if we got it from the Kits’ location but it was awful. So I had to guess on this one as that’s the one which was the closest to the event.
I am talking about the old awful croutons that ruined the Caesar Salad and made me want to vomit. And I had to spit it out into a napkin in front of my boss, which probably made me lose a point.
The burger was okay, but the cheese I put on mine looked really old, too. Just as I had finished loading mine, they took out some «fresh» cheese.
We had bottled water (provided by them) that was Safeway brand. It tasted off.
The buns are always way too big for the burger. And the Caesar sauce? Is that what I’ve been eating on their burgers as their «special» sauce all of this time?
Unfortunately, we did not get onion rings or fries, and the onion rings have always been my favourite thing about this place.
A quick glance at the website shows me that my meal was around $ 12.00. Funny, that I just had IN-​N-​OUT for two, animal style (extra cheese and onions on both the fries and burgers) and a homemade shake for around $ 10.00. (plus airfare).
And it was all fresh!
I honestly don’t understand how Vera’s became so «big» except that the meat itself usually tastes fresh. That salad really turned me off, however, which is odd, since I just reviewed a burger place!
I still think that White Spot is better, overall, here, which isn’t saying a whole lot, really.
ps-​As I write this, I can’t forget about the time I ordered food from here after watching the long-​haired cooks WITHOUT hairnets who touched their sweaty faces, money and then food. Blech. Maybe it’s changed since then? Since it was on the beach, we sucked it up.
But that was the Cornwall location, fyi.

I love a good burger and had my first Vera burger at the 2009 Pride festival. The burger was *amazing*, juicy and flavorful. So, I decided to visit this Vera’s location while out running errands.
Hmmm, not that great.
The service was mediocre — the guy had a very hard time understanding that we wanted one burger combo (with fries and drink) and one other burger (no fries or drink), «so, you want 2 combos?». No. «Oh, you want just two burgers and no fries?» No. «Oh, so you want just one combo and nothing else?» No.
Seriously, it took about five minutes to place the order. I kid you not. I kept thinking to myself, ‘is this really happening?’.
Then, we waited. I was ok with the wait since it was being made fresh. You can see them making it, so I watched. I noticed that the person on bun duty was adding the ketchup/​mayo to the buns while the burger cooked.
When the order arrived, it was hot but lackluster. The burger wasn’t juicy but instead a bit dry. And, since the bun guy was one step ahead of everyone else, the ketchup had fully absorbed into the bun … so, a mushy tomato-​infushed bun. Not ideal.
It seriously tainted my desire to visit Vera’s again. Next time, I’ll try a different location and see how it matches up with this experience.
