I love shawarma and Baraka has been my go-to place so I was excited to try out Sultan’s Shawarma which opened up in the former Black Sheep Diner location on Ellice Ave. The interior is much fresher than it used to be with bright green paint and a rehaul of the furniture. The place looks a lot more welcoming now. I opted for the Sultan’s Chicken plate($ 10.95), which includes rice, taboulet, hummus, pita bread with garlic sauce and chicken but you can choose whatever protein for any of the plates. Portion size is huge so you get value for your money here — makes sense being so close to U of W and all. I was a bit surprised at how much sauce was drizzled onto chicken especially since it includes hot sauce(if you want it spicy), tahini and yes, gravy. WTF. Now, I am all for weird combinations of flavours so I was expecting this to taste really good because it just sounded so odd. But no, unfortunately, the gravy didn’t do it for me. Honestly, I wish he just put the sauces to the side instead. I hate stuff that’s drowing in sauces in general because it masks the taste! And here, I couldn’t tell if the chicken was tasty on its own because of the mess of sauces here. The chicken was sitting for a while so it was not the juciest but I’ve had worst. The rice was okay but once again it was under the chicken and all that sauce so hard to tell. The toboulet was okay — a bit soggy. The hummus was average with a balanced taste. The portion is huge… my take out box weighed a few pounds and I barely got through a third of my food and I was really hungry too. Granted, the gravy kind of put me off so I didn’t eat as much as I wanted. But value was for the amount of food you get, it’s great for the students nearby. If I did come back, I would definitely not get the gravy and would ask for the sauces on the side. Place was clean and the service was friendly.
