Embankment is a strange name for a Vietnamese restaurant. What relation does it have to Vietnam, or to Vietnamese cuisine? I had no clue and I still don’t now. Anyway, my friend and I were near the street behind Sogo and we were a little hungry. It was around 4pm — a perfect time for afternoon tea! We didn’t know where to eat and were too lazy to walk around, so I used my Openrice application on my phone to see what restaurants were in the area. This is a really useful tool on the application if you don’t know what to eat, by the way! We scrolled down for quite a bit until we saw Embankment. It didn’t have remarkably good reviews, but it was Vietnamese food and we both happened to be craving Vietnamese food — so we decided to go for it. It was funny, because when though we were already in the vicinity, the restaurant was still a little hard to find! Eventually, we were able to locate it opposite Red Mall near World Trade Centre. The restaurant was pretty big and was maybe one quarter occupied. We ordered the tea set — we both got phở — and my friend got the iced lemon tea while I opted for lime soda. Our drinks came immediately and I wasn’t very impressed with my lime soda. They were pretty stingy with the lime, only adding two or three tiny slices into it. I poked them quite a bit but even so, it just tastes like ordinary soda. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t LIME soda. And the phở was disappointing — well, the noodles and the beef were fine, but the soup base was SO salty! I didn’t realize it in the first couple of minutes, but then the sodium hit my tongue like a brick wall and consumed every fibre in my tongue. I soldiered on till I had about a quarter of my noodles left… Then I gave up. So, no, unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend Embankment. The phở was just ridiculously salty and it was like eating mouthfuls of salt with every bite. I was actually thinking of asking for some hot water to add to my phở, but decided against it. To be fair, maybe the other dishes taste better and aren’t as salty? I don’t know, but I won’t be risking it.
