Awesome 5 spiced chicken and can’t seem to get enough of it. The long lines does not discourage me to stop eating here but encourages me to eat more of this. There are two items that seems to get my attention and everyone around here, I usually get the large flattened chicken breast and the drumstick, these chicken parts are marinated and twice fried in a potato starch batter sprinkled with 5 spice. Every bite you get a hint of white and black pepper, sugar, chili and others spices I have not figured out yet. Tip: Go during rush-hour, you get the chicken faster.

Have you ever had popcorn chicken at a Taiwanese restaurant? The large fried chicken at Hot-Star is exactly like Taiwanese popcorn chicken, except it’s one piece in the shape of a large, flat schnitzel. Pretty delicious if you ask me. We bumped into this fried-stuff stand by fluke after walking around the Ladies Market area and was instantly interested as there was a long queue. You know what they say, if lots of people are waiting it should be good! Not always the case, but it was here. We ordered the hot fried chicken to share as it’s their most famous item and it was really tasty. Super crispy exterior with only a little bit of spice from their red chili spice they sprinkle on. Comes in a paper pouch for the convenience of eating on the go. Hot-Star, I’ll be hoping to see you soon in Taiwan!

I’m definitely spoiled because I’m Taiwanese, and the original Hot Star in Taiwan is definitely better! However, the HK branch is also pretty impressive, and definitely hits the spot whenever I’m craving large fried chicken(very frequently). I loved this joint as a kid because the chicken was bigger than my head, and this is exactly the same reason why I still love it today. Service is not the best(HK style), but worth stopping by for a quick(and large) snack!

Hell yes. You ever go out wanting some quick food, some street meat, but aren’t sure what you want, but when you find it, it hits the spot so perfectly that it’s like kismet? That was Hot Star. I tried the large fried chicken and the sweet potatoes side. The chicken was a huge slab of piping-hot breast meat bigger than my head. Just a thin, juicy slab of breaded chicken that was somehow magically not greasy. Amazingly delicious. Am now mad I can’t get this back home, it was that good. The sweet potatoes were home-fry-sized potato chunks that looked to be sprinkled with a cinnamon sugar. Also served in a bag, but with skewers. I’d seriously eat this every week if I lived in HK. Two thumbs up.

My GOODNESS! That fried cholesterol-riddden, artery-clogging fried taiwanese chicken(steak? patty?) is just SO delicious. The whole thing comes out pretty much as big as my face, and is piping hot. Even on a hot summer day this thing is delicious to me. A must get when I am in MK!

I don’t know why but every time I’ve eaten here, I go home and see an article online about a disease outbreak connected to chicken in Asia. Luckily nothing has ever happened following those scares… Whenever I’m in Mongkok I always swing through a bunch of food stands, and this is usually one of them. This is a Taiwanese chain and this is just one of their few locations in HK, but probably the most convenient location since it’s in a heavy commercial area. The menu is a bunch of fried items, and the signature is a giant slab of fried chicken(大雞排). I’d say about 90% of the line gets this too and it’s ready pretty much immediately. I will say that I’ve tried this chain in Taiwan as well, and thought it was more mindblowing there than it was in HK. But the locations in HK won’t disappoint you if you’re hopping between a bunch of street food vendors to try a bunch of different things and hoping to find some good fried chicken.
