Jasons, located at the basement of Hysan Place in Causeway Bay, has always been a supermarket that people don’t take very seriously — what I mean is that most just take a round there and maybe pick up a few things out of intrigue, but nobody really does any serious grocery shopping here. I’m guilty of that too, but that’s mostly because I don’t live close to Causeway Bay and hauling fruits and vegetables on an hour-and-a-half journey back to the New Territories is hardly my idea of fun! I love just walking around at Jasons though. They’ve got a decent selection of different chips, many which are direct imports from the UK or the US. When I went to the US one summer, I fell in love with something called ‘Pop Chips’ — they’re rice cake-esque chips that are supposedly healthier as they’re baked instead of fried, and they’re absolutely delicious. I probably devoured an average of five packs a week when I was there, giving all the different flavors a go. Imagine my excitement when I realized that they had them at Jasons — for a steeper price, of course, but at least they were there! Jasons has a good range of imported drinks as well, such as Arizona iced tea and Charlie’s old fashioned lemonade. But as a yogurt fanatic, I find their selection of yogurt quite lacking. Their cold cuts section — cheese and ham — is not the most impressive too. I once asked to try two or three types of cheese, hoping to buy maybe 100 grams to snack on at home, but the guy behind the counter seemed reluctant to let me try them. Jason’s has two self check out counters at the cashiers, which is pretty cool. They’re not that necessary though because this Jason’s isn’t a very popular supermarket and I’ve never actually seen a line for the checkouts. One good thing about this supermarket is that towards where Starbucks is, there’s a Baikoken, which serves the most heavenly ramen, and a sushi counter opposite. In between are a couple of tables and you can buy sushi from the counter there and eat it on the spot. The sushi is freshly made — there’s a kitchen right behind. You can also buy snacks or a drink at Jasons and bring it here to eat or drink immediately.
