Hosted a function here and I would expect a lot better for HKJC. Food was good. We had a banquet, had a pretty big serving of suckling pig — about 5 pieces and was delicious. The conch soup was tasty and full of ingredients. Other dishes included duck web, braised abalone, fried rice and a few other standard banquet dishes. The dessert was special — steamed milk with a very generous spoonful of birds nest on top. The disappointing part was the service. The staff were not proactive, didn’t start the event briefing until well after our cocktails had begun, we had to ask for everything. During our panel … Wait staff walked past the speakers with cluttering plates and exclaimed«oops!» when they realized what they were doing … And the staff spoke loudly on the side during the panel. The audio system was weak … There was static off the mics and half our guests struggled to hear the discussion. Moon Koon needs to train the wait staff properly and improve the service. They are supposed to be serving members!

This is fancy dim sum at its best. Perched above the race track, you get to grub in an elegant dining room with a fantastic backdrop on high quality Chinese cuisine. From the service to the ambience to the food, it’s very obvious that there’s no skimping; attention to detail is key. I never saw the bill(compliment of family of friends), but I’m sure it wasn’t cheap. About the food: good, solid dim sum and other Chinese delicacies. They even made«gerng-cho» stewed ginger vinegar with pork feet — and it was excellent. The standout dish was their ROASTEDPORK. Omg… it blew my mind. They’re ubiquitous enough hanging on the windows in every Chinatowns, but being able to make it well is another story. Moon Koon takes the cake here… they get my #1VOTEFORBESTROASTEDPORK I’VEEVERHAD. Fat cooked so slowly, it’s soft and almost melted onto the meat. On each bite you get a nice crunch(not too hard and not too soft) from the perfectly roasted pork skin. Nice subtle seasoning. Dip it with the accompanying plum sauce. HEAVEN.

A dinner favourite of mine– a lot of people will think that coming here on racing days is the most important thing but I beg to disagree. yes, it is exciting to come here on racing days when the evening race light up the racecourse and horses seem to race right past your dining table. But given that I do come here on a semi-regular basis I am just coming here for family dinners so I can really do without the ups and downs; especially when you have a 7 months old toddler with you. The views here are magnificent, apart from the racecourse– you can actually see the HK Football club and the centre fields where you can see training of all kinds. Looking a bit further you can have an unobstructed view of Tai Hang and Happy Valley. It is rare for any city to have such a large expanse of open ground in arguably the most expensive bit of it. Back to the restaurant. As mentioned by other reviewers, their Peking Duck is very, very well done and this is something I look forward to. Other siu mei dishes are also very delicious. Not being a fish lover myself, I have been told that the fish there is good so I can only leave that for you to be the judge. Getting there is easy– if you drive, non members can park their car in the in-field section and on foot you could walk over from Causeway Bay. Given the location, the view and the food — this place is difficult not to like.

I’ve been to Moon Koon for lunch, at the invitation of a member of Jockey Club and I did enjoy the food and the company. We got there by 12.30 and they quickly led us to a table, a little far away from the window, even though it wasn’t busy at all. However as the place is covered up by large glass windows, it was really bright inside(it helped that the weather was good). They first served some jasmine tea placing the tea pot at a small table by my side and gave us a couple of menus. However I didn’t have a look at it as one of us ordered for the rest and we trusted his judgment. As a starter we had a chicken soup, just how I like it — small chicken pieces with bones and skin on and clear broth, no noodles, nothing else. It had a light ginger taste but the taste was very mild, maybe to prepare us for stronger flavors later… dim sum(prawns), lobster frites, sautée mushrooms, spring rolls. The names may not be accurate, as I didn’t order anything and didn’t read them on the menu. I enjoyed the veggies and the prawns in the dim sum were huge and really tasty. I wasn’t that keen on the lobster frites, they had a bit of a sand-ish texture because of the flour I guess. I skipped the dessert and went on to have a coffee — I had ordered a espresso, single, and got a triple one! Taste wise was really good in fact and I had the whole cup, while the rest of them had a mango pudding. Overall, a really nice dining experience, but what I liked the most about it was probably the service and the location, facing the racecourse. I would love to come back on a horse race day and feel the atmosphere there too!
