This is an institution in Hong Kong and where one comes for Shanghainese grocery. One can find some unique ingredients which are difficult to find elsewhere. During Chinese New Year and other major Chinese festivals, this place is full of people. It is quite a sight.

Old San Yang is a super old-school Shanghainese grocery shop located a bit of a jaunt away from the MTR station. The boy and I made the trek out for one item, and one item alone: their chili crab fat XO sauce. XOCHILISAUCE w/CRAB FAT. At $ 40USD a jar, this stuff does not come cheaply, but oh my GAWD is it worth it. We picked up two jars and were able to bring some back to the U.S.(no easy feat). It’s absolutely delicious, and I already know how crushed I will be the day we run out(rationing is my friend right now). The big player ingredients are Jinhua ham, dried scallops & shrimp, and Shanghainese hairy crab fat. I was a little confused why people were saying this was a hairy crab rose sauce, as it isn’t(at least according to the shop owner). Regardless, fantastic stuff!

This is my go-to place for Shanghai Hairy Crab(大閘蟹)every season, they’ve been around forever so you can depend on them for quality crabs. Beats buying from some random fly by night popup stall. Tip: go to Groupbuyer and buy coupons for this store to save 10−20% on the retail price of the crabs, they are kind of low tech so you will have to bring a printed copy of the coupon before they’ll let you collect the crabs. Don’t forget to pick up the special vinegar and leaves(紫蘇葉)to cook them with, they are usually included for free if you buy enough crabs.
