Shung Hing is located in the more quiet part of Sheung Wan. There are actually 3 restaurants with the same name next to each other. It’s a family run business, one shop belongs to the husband, the other to his wife, the third to his mistress. Many of the staff are relatives in the first and second generation. The setting of the restaurants is simple and rustic. Time definitely stood still here, has a look from the sixties or seventies. Even the thick water glasses remind you of that. It fits this place totally, makes a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. Service is extremely good! They are attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly which you may not expect from the setting of the restaurant. Drink beer or order some Chinese wine from the limited drinks list. Or bring your own wines or whiskeys, there’s no corkage. The Chiu Chow food served here is classic and simple but at it’s best! The marinated meats are tender, juicy and delicious. Go for the steamed cold crab! It may be pricey but it’s steamed to perfection and very fresh. Same goes for the giant conch which really is a delicacy. This size is extremely hard to find and here it’s done to perfection. Imho this is the best Chiu Chow restaurant in Hong Kong.

There seems to be something odd about Chiuchow restaurants the world over, a universal rule, as to what makes it a great place: see how grubby it is. My impression is that the grubbier the place the better the food is going to be. This also applies to level of service that you get at the place: if its really good and it puts a smile on your face; you are in the wrong place. Shung Hing Chiuchow Restaurant is an institution in the Chiuchow restaurant; this place has been around for god knows how long and even from its early days it has been known for serving exceptional Chiuchow food with a price to match. «Daa lang» as we know it in Cantonese, Chiuchow foodstuff places great emphasis on marinated items– such as goose meat, tofu, squid etc. There is also an array of innards that could be chosen though tourists may find that to be just a bit too exotic. The oyster pancake(hoo beng) is also something that should not be missed. The list goes on: the oyster congee is a nice thing to try on a cold evening and sure will keep you warm. The cold crab is a delicacy though it is pricey and prices are seasonal as such. There is no doubt that the food is good here and nothing will beat the pleasure of having dinner here, big group of friends, beer in hand. The place is usually quite quet during the early dinner hours as nobody has left work yet. Plus it is a traditional for«daa lang» shops to stay open late hence people do make it a habit to turn up later. The place, as I have described, is dingy and seating isn’t perfect. On crowded place it gets quite loud and the service is chaotic at times. But that’s the appeal with these places isn’t it? That’s why I said– the grubbier the better.

Growing up in Hong Kong, whenever my family needed to take guests out to dinner, or when we have relatives visiting, my father would always go to this one restaurant called Cariana. It serves Chiu Chow food, also known as, Teo Chew food. This type of cuisine is ALLOVER Hong Kong. Growing up, I didn’t understand why my father would always pick this restaurant. As a kid all you want to eat is McDonalds or pasta! However, I now understand. Hong Kong simply has AMAZING chiu chow food. My appreciation has grown for it tremendously. Today I’m not going to write about Cariana. I will write about Sheung Hing. It is my absolute favourite Chiu Chow Restaurant. If you you want to know how good it is, They have 3 stores side by side on the same street. If you want good, authentic Chiu Chow food, don’t waste your time, go to Sheung Hing. Must Order: Pan Fried Noodles– They are fired on both sides and it is super crispy. It is cut into squares and then you pour sugar and vinegar on it. This is a Chiu Chow Staple. Cold Crab– AMAZING but pricey, but AMAZING. Duck Wing– I order this EVERYTIME. I have not yet failed to not order this. It is my fav, it is good to chew and bite on and it is a staple in Chiu Chow Food. Sharks Fin: Again, Amazing but pricey. Omelette Fried Egg– Its delicious, try it. Just do me a favour and try this restaurant and order what I suggested or ask for the most popular dishes. He/She will probably tell you all the ones I mentioned above. You will not be disappointed =)
