Exhausted, exhilarated and motivated. Three words to describe how I felt at the end of my first class at Torq. Unbeknownst to me, I had arrived for a race day in which Torq regulars competed against each other and a local pro. As a result it was a pretty intense and hot introduction to Hong Kong spin. The best thing about Torq is that the bikes have power meters which means you can judge your effort and compare your performance week by week. The setup is not quite as slick as I have seen at other spin classes in London but works well enough. Your live stats are also displayed on a leaderboard at the front of a class so you can see how you are doing against other people in the class. For the competitive, this provides added motivation to get ahead/sty ahead of your nearest spinning rival. It certainly works for me. Changing rooms are clean and nice with free towels etc. It would be nice to have a bit more space but this is Hong Kong! All in all, a good setup and your first ride is free so sign up online and see for yourself.

I was very excited to be able to keep spinning despite needing to be in Hong Kong for the week. I had no problems signing up online for Kelvin’s 11:00 TORQdeHK on Sunday(your first ride is free) and I arrived to find it less than half full. Torq is in an office building(Li Dong) off Li Yuen East Street near the Central MRT station.(If you use the Unilocal app, the map will get you there with zero difficulty in about five minutes.) When you enter you’ll be given a locker and after dropping off your stuff inside it you will be shown to a bike and helped on how to operate it. Kelvin’s class can be summed up in one word: insane. He pushed me way past my limitations(which made me feel every so slightly like throwing up during the class but very accomplished as soon as it was over). Torq uses a leader-board that every rider is on during the class. If competition motivates you, you will love this. Today I took Loretta’s 07:10 TORQCore class with just two others. I liked the combination of a half hour ride and then core work on a mat. This feels like a pretty magical combination — I think I’m going to have to suggest that my local spin studio offer something similar! Torq has at least a few classes each day at convenient times and from what I can tell it’s pretty easy to get into them. If you’re desensitized to Soul Cycle prices(I am not) you won’t be shocked by Torq’s(a single class is HK$ 250, or about $ 32). Because they have showers(with nice smelling amenities) you could easily spin and then head to the office. When I next find myself in Hong Kong I’m likely to bite the bullet and pay for a ride at Torq.
