History

Established in 1870.

Founded by David Charles Byrne in the second half of the 19th century, the Byrne famile music business has seen Dublin change and grow through Empire, Revolution and Republic. An integral landmark in what is now known as Dublin’s Creative Quarter, the shop has seen four generations of Byrne’s. The Original business specialised in Harps and Pianos, with Violins taking a larger role in the 1920s and 30s while in the 50s and 60s the focus shifted to specialising in stringed instruments with both classical and folk /traditional instruments. The 80s and 90s saw a resurgence in Irish Traditional Music /Folk music coupled with new instruments like the Ukulele and world percussion instruments.
