Our Airbnb host recommended this place because it was close to the house we rented while in Dublin for the holidays. The food was delicious and lots of variety. They were great about accommodating my daughter’s food allergies with no fuss at all. The atmosphere was quite lively and loud on both of the nights we ate there, but we enjoyed the energy. Service was a bit slow the first night, I think the staff was overwhelmed. Second night was better. We highly recommend this little neighborhood gem.

WHATCAN I SAY! I have long heard about this palce being a great spot! But the food I got! WOAH! Blew my mind! Seriously good! They rock it! The vegetarian burger! Then need an award for this! The onion baji bun… YES! Then the venison braised… you guys are on it! My favourite is the root veg chips — I need to know how you do this! I will be returning time and time again when I am home! Well in!

After my initial experience at L. Mulligan last year I have had the pleasure of eating here a few more times. And while each experience was enjoyable, it has not achieved the same calibre of that first unexpected meal. We most recently ate here earlier this week and my potted crab starter was extremely bland as was the chocolate, nuts and banana dessert. The chicken kiev however was quite good as well as J’s black pudding starter. I still think this place has a great atmosphere and a unique menu but my past three times have been somewhere between a 3 and 4 star meal, rather than a knock-out. Will return though!

Mulligans is, by far, one of my favourite places to eat in Dublin. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been there now. The place managed to recapture that«old pub» feel; they have groceries behind the door, everything is wooden and looks like an «old man pub». They serve somewhat traditional pub food with a more contemporary edge(don’t roll your eyes, it’s not as douchey as it sounds). Also the menu changes regularly which I always feel is a very good thing in a restaurant. You frequently see dishes such as roasted pork belly with bubble and squeak potato cakes, homemade chicken kievs and wild board burgers. The best thing on the menu in Mulligans, though, are the skotch eggs. They usually have three kinds on the menu; standard sausage meat(always delicious), veggie(also delicious) and another skotch egg that rotates with the menu. For the… uh… «skotch egg rotation» I have seen smoked haddok and black pudding skotch eggs amongst other things. Even though they have many other delicious starters here, I have never been able to bring myself to order something other than a skotch egg. Mulligans is also a great place to drink; they have a massive selection of craft beers and whiskeys. On the menu they have recommended pairing of beer with all their meals and whiskey with their deserts. The bar staff are more than happy to recommend and talk your ear off about their drinks. Mulligans also has a partner micro brewery(the Brown Paper Bag Project) that brews some of the tastiest beers around. Mulligans is a great place to have a meal then sit around drinking for the night sampling tasty beers and whiskeys. If you feel like treating yourself to an evening of fancy eating and drinking this is your place.

I can’t believe I’m reducing my star rating to three!!! Third time unlucky for my visit to L. Mulligan Grocer. My fiancé chose here for his 40th birthday celebration with his parents and brother after we had been twice and enjoyed the food and drinks. We arrived about 15 minutes before our booking but that wasn’t an issue and we were brought to our seats but after that? Well the best I can say is that service was chaotic. The birthday boys drinks were wrong, firstly he ordered a saison beer that didn’t arrive. He asked another server who then told him they didn’t have it anymore! Then after our meal he tried to order whiskey that was on their menu. First it didn’t turn up and then we were brought the wrong drink before finally being told that they didn’t have it anymore!!! When we got the bill the wrong drink that arrived and returned was still on the bill. I got that removed pretty sharpish! I was a little disappointed with the number of jellies that arrived with the bill — also it didn’t turn up in the Oxford maths tin like on previous visits. We asked for the bill and then we had another server come over to ask for the table back. Unfortunately all of the little touches I loved on previous visits weren’t there this time. What a let down! I have to admit that we left a crappy tip and told the manager. We got a bottle of wine as an apology but with that being said the only reason I haven’t been so harsh is that I absolutely loved my food!!! To start I had the black pudding with almond crumbed sweet potato and apple croquette, goats cheese, pickled beetroot and balsamic syrup. For my main course I ordered the chicken Kiev which came with a drumstick, charred corn, beetroot slaw and twice cooked chips. Finally I did order dessert — smoked caramel brownie which came with blackcurrant purée, candied popcorn, apple chantilly cream and an apple crisp. I ordered 3fe French press which unfortunately was very weak. To sum it all up the food is still amazing but there’s an air of complacency or just a little air of carelessness about the staff this time.

What happened? Been here so many times I decided it would be a nice relaxing spot for my 40th family meal. How wrong was I. The service was beyond bad. My waiter and waitress clearly had issues grasping my drinks order, seaweed saison that I enjoyed at the craft beer festival never arrived and my cask Galway Hooker arrived on draft. When the waiter came back he looked at me as if I had 2 heads, checked and told sorry not on tap. My pork belly hadn’t been cooked slow enough to render down and my scotch egg was nothing like I had here before l. Special occasion means special single malt which was confused with a cocktail and after explanation and pointing they still screwed it up and then charged to the bill. It’s ardbeg uigeadail not some bloody magic potion. The so called 3fe coffee was weak as 3rd running from an espresso machine. I asked for the bill as I knew it was time to give the table back. 10 min later no bill but a very belligerent waitress came up and demanded the table. We normally leave a great tip but this time I was hard pressed to leave 2%. The whole thing was well below par and really not what these guys are know for. Come on guys. I cannot articulate in a review my disappointment so I mentioned it to the host at front of house and while he was apologetic and offered money from the bill, this is not what I wanted but I did want to express how disappointed and saddened I was at one of my favorite spots is now down there in the dumps. BTW I did not accept money from the bill nor did I want it and I think in 17 years of paying my own bills I have complained perhaps 4 times, I normally adopt the quiet Irish mentality and moan later but I did want to let them know and hope they might get a grip. I won’t be back because I’m afraid complacency breeds contempt.

They served me the best steak I have literally ever eaten. Not figuratively, literally. It melted in my mouth, the texture was just perfect and the taste… out of this world. I have no idea what kind of voodoo they’re doing back in the kitchen, but I ate there two days in a row and it was just as good the second time. They have the best food I had during my entire stay in Ireland, the only pity was I didn’t go there until my second to last day. Everything is of the highest quality and responsibly sourced locally. The menu changes by the day to make the best use of what ingredients are currently in season. Just… phenomenal. If you are in Dublin you owe it to yourself to get here if at all possible. The bread is also very good.

One of the more authentic Irish pub/restaurants to eat at but was slightly overpriced for the quality and taste of food in my opinion. For service, the waiter was just unfamiliar with the menu which only had around 8 entrees. My friend asked to make sure if the type of meat for a dish was fish and the waiter first said that he had no idea and then responded that it «should be.» Clearly, didn’t know the menu. For appetizers, ordered their well known Scotch Egg which was DELICIOUSANDDESERVES5STARS on its own. It was a seasoned yolk egg with fried and salted outer shell that came with two sauces — one like a salsa and the other a seasoned relish mayo. Delicious, warm, and hit the spot. I ordered the the chicken kiev, which to my innocent surprise, was fried! Regardless, I felt that the outer seasoning for the frying could have used more seasoning but the meat inside was perfectly cooked. Also came with two herb buttered pieces of corn and a red cabbage slaw and a whole cup of «chips» or fries. Really good veggie sides that helped to bring the meal together and created a good introduction to Irish traditional cuisine. When you pay, they also give you a small bag of gummies I very much appreciated.

I was really happy with my visit. I booked well In advance as I was only visiting Dublin for the weekend. The staff are more than happy to give advice on which drinks are best and I loved the selection on craft beer on offer. The food was amazing in particular The Dark Chocolate cake with honey comb ice cream and pastachio praline

Omg yes. This spot was right around the corner from the flat we’d rented for our week in Ireland and it was a big win for us! We dropped our bags and went right to dinner here the first night we landed. It was excellent! The overall atmosphere is just too cool – beautiful and well-stocked bar, exceedingly friendly staff, fun pictures on the wall, and a general air of Irish coziness that started our trip off perfectly. The menu was extensive and approachable, which was really well appreciated. Their vegetarian offerings were noteworthy(the veg scotch egg!) but the farm-raised chicken was immediately enticing. Definitely one of the best meals I’ve had in a while thanks to their sincere attention to detail and the artistry with which they cook. Drinks and pudding(the crumble) were also exceptional. I cannot recommend them enough if you’re in Dublin – a wonderful place to get exceptional food with all the inviting warmth of a home-cooked meal!

This is one of those places I wish I lived closer to as I think it’s the perfect Sunday spot! From the outside this just looks like a normal Irish pub but it’s far from it! Not only do they have an extensive alcohol menu with some really good beers and whiskeys, the food is also top notch! It’s really well cooked and(again, back to the alcohol) they have beer and whiskey recommendations to accompany each dish on the menu. I’ve had both the steak and chicken kiev here and while the kiev was amazing, the steak was nothing special. The desserts are really good, but a bit on the expensive side given the size. It’s the little touches though that make this place special. The reserved signs on the table are made from scrabble pieces, the menus come in old books and the bills come in old geometry sets with a paper bag of penny jellies to perfectly complete the experience.

Very disappointed with this place. Was in the stoneybatter area looking for a quick bite and I had spotted this establishment on Unilocal on various occasions. Both myself and my date ordered the bacon cheese burgers with triple fried chips. We found that the meat was undercooked which making us feel ill later. It did taste quite nice which is why it got the 3 stars. However in consideration that you are paying 16 euro for this and coupled with a strong smell of damp from the pub neither of us particularly enjoyed the meal and were eager to leave

Ah!

They make great Scotch Eggs(there’s also a vegetarian version of this) and have a pretty extensive collection of beers. My personal favourite is the Lagunitas IPA which hard to find in Ireland. I ordered the vegetarian burger and it was quirky with root vegetable fries and roast potatoes instead of a bun.

This is a great looking pub/restaurant. I would have been happy enough whiling away some time here enjoying the excellent selection of beers that they have, from both keg and cask. Luckily for me a wise decision was made to also eat here. The veggie burger here was likely the most interesting and unusual veggie burger I have ever enjoyed. And I truly did enjoy it. So much going on in my mouth I couldn’t keep track! Here is how the menu describes it, so you have some idea — House-made spiced chickpea and aubergine burger, Ardsallagh Goats cheese, beetroot coleslaw, Paris Bakery rosemary & tomato bun, Mulligaloe relish, The beer was delicious. I had a Sligoe Red IPA and Mrs F had a MetalMan Pale Ale. I couldn’t decide which was better. If ever faced with such a conundrum again I will have both!

This is a fantastic spot a bit removed from all the action in the center of Dublin. The term ‘gastropub’ doesn’t quite do it justice, as it seems to maintain it’s Irish authenticity and charm while simply enhancing the beer offerings and creative food selections. The place has a feel of an upscale pub. Everything is beautifully kept up and a bit rustic/nostalgic, and the bar is beautiful! The menus are repurposed books. A bit cumbersome and clunky to go through, but the concept is grand. We showed up without a reservation, and the LMG staff was kind enough to find a seat for the three of us anyway. It happened to be the darkest table in the restaurant(a point that they wanted us to understand before we agreed to be seated), but we were happy to sit there. About 10 minutes later, they asked if we wanted to be reseated as a reservation canceled, but our original table wasn’t quite as dark as they had made it out to be. But kudos for checking in and asking us! I feel like we had 3 – 4 different servers coming by to take our drink orders, bring drinks, take our food orders, bring food, check in on us, etc. A strange way to do things, but nothing was lost in the shuffle, and it seemed pretty seamless. Everyone was extremely helpful, friendly and patient with us Americans despite how busy the establishment was on a Sunday night. We ordered a round of drinks, and I was happy at their diversity of beers on draft. I can’t remember exactly what I ordered, but it was a kind of stout with hints of chocolate and cherries. VERY good. The food was also very, very good. I had the chicken kiev, and it was prepared perfectly. My dad and brother also really enjoyed their meals. We ended it by splitting two desserts. I wish I could remember what they were, but suffice to say we did not make a bad choice. I don’t know if that’s really possible here. The only knock on the place is that they were out of two or three entrees when we placed our order — and it was only about 8pm! Chicken kiev was my second choice… although after I ate it I forgot all about that. Ditto with my drinks. Option number two was also great. To sum up: Try it, but be prepared with a second(or third) food/beer option.

Back sooner than expected but with a bit of forethought this time. We booked a table, which was done by email via their website(it was all very easy). It was much more enjoyable this time with a proper table booked. It was brighter and there was more space. The conversation was much better too, now that we weren’t looking at a wall. I opted for the Chicken Kiev, which was excellent. I accompanied that with a Vlad The Baker pale ale which quenched the thirst of a long weeks abstinence. You’ve won me over LMG. I’m a fan and hope to be back very soon. BTW is it mandatory for the male staff here to have a beard? Joking ;)

Of all the places we visited to eat while on vacation in Ireland-this was the most interesting and exciting. It’s a pub, but a total local’s joint and a secret foodie paradise. My hotel desk clerk had no idea what I was talking about. They have this amazing menu that is more like an American Gastropub would have then your average bar menu. It was an actually grocery back in the day-and I’m please to report it’s back in a fashion: They set up a grocery section, open each Friday & Saturday from 12.30pm selling craft beer to take away in refillable growler flasks, beer hampers, retro sweets, Arun Bakery Stoneybatter sourdough & Vlaa baps, Irish farmhouse cheeses, Wall & Keogh tea by the gram, 3FE Coffee beans, Dublin Kombucha, cupcake mixes & jars of bacon jam. YESPLEASE on all of that if I lived in town! We made an early reservation at 5pm and had no problem, but anything later than that is tough to get in if you don’t plan in advance. It’s one of Dublin’s hottest craft beer bars-a scene that’s just been heating up in the area for about two years. Being from San Diego I was thrilled to see this industry taking off-the range of options is getting bigger and bigger-and this place pours cask beers, has limited edition brews and a range of options you won’t find anywhere else. It all compliments the vibe there-and the food of course! The menu for food is bound within old books, so page through, I almost missed a whole section. I had my heart set on the Scotch Egg to begin, but as we were so early they were still in prep-so I went for the Black pudding, my first ever. «Sir» Jack McCarthy’s Black Pudding, Beetroot Purée, Apple & Red Onion Boxty, Lovely Plums with Fivemiletown Goats Cheese. The server said it’d be the best I’d ever have-and I did enjoy it immensely. Maybe I’m ruined for all other puddings now, and they swear it’s the best in Dublin. I had the Free Range Chicken Kiev made with Inishowen Whiskey Butter and Hazelnut Crumb served with Twice Cooked Chips, Red Cabbage & Warm Smoked Bacon Slaw with Corn Purée as my main course, and ate it completely. I also stole the pot of smokey au jus from my BF’s 9 oz Kettyle Extra Mature Rib Eye Steak and poured it all over my chips(thick cut fries from you ‘Mericans!) We passed on dessert-but I had a whiskey and apple juice drink that was to die for. It’s a must when you’re in Dublin, off the tourists path.

Sometimes you just have a feeling about a place. I already knew I was going to love Mulligan’s Grocer before I ever even stepped foot inside. The food and beer menus online looked amazing and, as an added indicator of «these guys really know their stuff», they do food and beer pairings. Oh, and they«just happen» to be located in our new neighbourhood. We walked in on a Friday night without a reservation, and it was busy, but it wasn’t too much drama for us to grab a table for two. The vibe was laid-back bustle — no elbowing at the bar to get a drink served to you. We ended up ordering the black pudding starter(served with a boxty, pickled pear, whipped goat’s cheese and port balsamic reduction) and the burger with zucchini fries. As it was our first time, we also went with the two beers they recommended to complement each dish. Everything was excellent! The zucchini fries were delicious, but special mention has to go to the black pudding starter. The composition and flavours were amazing… right up there with some fine-dining meals I’ve had, but for pub food prices! The beer recommended with the dish was the Rodenbach Grand Cru, a Belgian beer with a slight sourness — it went with the richness of the black pudding and creamy goat’s cheese perfectly. An A+ for this genius pairing. I already can’t wait to go back!

Publicans everywhere, take a good long look at Mulligans, because this is how you do it. Everything’s so good here… The happy and diverse clientele — families, groups of friends, couples -, the extremely helpful and friendly staff, the extensive choice of drinks, especially if you’re into craft beers, and last but certainly not least, the delicious food. So, in more detail: — The ambiance: unassuming, cozy and not too loud, even though it gets a bit busy. — The service: the waiters and bartenders are all very amicable and polite, and some of them get somewhat chatty. Also, I love the fact that they actually have a hostess greeting people and managing the tables, it makes everything go a lot smoother. — Drinks: oh boy, this is like pub paradise. They have whiskey and beer in quantity and quality, and they go the extra mile by presenting an excellent menu with drink pairings. — Food: it gives a whole new meaning to the expression pub grub! If you’re here on a Sunday you’ll be able to order the Sunday roast, which is very much worth it. There’s only one thing that I don’t fully appreciate, the vegetarian course is a bit too greasy, but it is so tasty and goes nicely with all the beer. This would easily be enough to make it a five-star pub, but there’s more: they put up some occasional events, usually for dinner with a specific theme — for instance, a special dinner to taste some whiskeys. They announce these kind of things on their blog, if you want to know when the next one’s coming up. It’s just the kind of place where you want to keep coming back for a truly pleasurable evening. As the Vulcans would say on Star Trek, may you live long and prosper!
