Wonderful meal and wonderful environment! My husband and I were trying to eat elsewhere but no one had a seat available so we found this hidden gem up a dark long set of stares, with a closed door at the top, kind of like out of a movie. So of course we opened it to check it out and WOW! What an amazing place! Very friendly staff and wonderful food. I will recommend this place to anyone coming to Rome!

The difference between bad touristy and good touristy: la Taverna is priced like a tourist trap but it’s indubitably good. And yes, a bit touristy, just because Piazza de’ Mercanti is such a charming little square, steps away from Trastevere. The ambiance is so romantic that you need to seat down here at least once during your stay in Rome, especially when the outside terrace is open during the summer months. The menu doesn’t quite pander to the vegetarians, if meat is not your thing, look elsewhere. Everything is grilled on the majestic fireplace, on the embers, so expect exquisite bruschetta(toasted bread) and sizzling hot steaks. I love the local sausages, with plural«s»: one dish is enough for two people, with three perfectly cooked«salsicce», so I would recommend trying two different options and then share. The desserts are good, but not outstanding, I think you’re better off taking a stroll afterwards for the close-by grattachecca. The touristy connotation only comes into play when the check arrives, but while overpriced, it’s not outrageous, given the size of the portions. If that’s the price to pay to seat in this unique little corner of Rome, then I think it’s well worth it.

Very good pizza and meat. A bit pricey but the portions are good. For pizza lovers a must!

We came to Taverna dei Mercanti because I read about it in a blog and we had never eaten in Trastevere despite its good reputation. The food was not bad at all, however it didn’t blow our socks off. The prices are also a little steep for what you get.

Interesting place. Located in an old factory of some kind. We had the mixed grilled meats and a couple of bruschetta. The food was very good, atmosphere very interesting and the waiter friendly. Would recommend this place as a diversion from the typical pizza and pasta places around Rome.

A popular restaurant at the edge of the typical Trastevere district, built in to an old factory and with a small terrace and a spacious outdoor courtyard to enjoy in the Summer time. Mixed grilled meat is simply delicious! Plus, in the Summer, you can assist to the next door restaurant street show from a better position if you eat outside.
