«Are you guys still open?» I asked the cashier and the waiter near the kitchen window. The cashier looked the other way, the waiter looked at me like what seemed like a long time before grudgingly saying«ya». To their credit, they let me sit, it was on the dot at 3pm and just when they were about to close. I was very appreciative as I was quite hungry but come ooooon, maybe say«yes» a little less grudgingly? Thank you. Food here is really good value, good portions. I like the ambience too, cozy place. The food is okay. Nothing to shout about but again, good value. It’s always like something is too heavily done. Sometimes the vegetables are too salted, sometimes the kimchi is too sour, sometimes the chicken is too sweet. Funny thing is that I like my food heavily done at times so I won’t complain here. But this does mean that the food is unrefined, it means that it doesn’t have the flavour balance of some of the better Korean restaurants. Would I come again? Oh yeah, when I’m in Amcorp mall I could definitely see myself dropping in. Would I purposely come from miles away? Probably not.

4 stars — average food with attractive prices! Located in Amcorp Mall, this mall is definitely not one of the popular ones that’s always crowded, but you’d see people actually coming here just for this Korean restaurant. The restaurant itself is not the fancy kind of restaurant, but rather it’s quite uniquely decorated and you can see that they made sure that they fit in as much seats as possible, without making people feel cramped up while they’re there. In fact, the Korean decoration aside, the place somehow made me feel like I’m in a Thai restaurant too. One thing that they are well known for would be their wide range of value set meals. They are mostly under RM20 and their portion is pretty fair too. Taste wise, I would say that most choices offered in the set meals are pretty decent, and their banchans are not bad either. However, we have also ordered the fried squid, which in my opinion was just alright. I have to compliment about the plating for the fried squid though — they have the side of delicately plated fruit salad to go with the fried squid, not too bad! Again, even for the appetizers and snacks orders, they are mostly under RM10 too. So, I guess that’s why this place is usually crowded! If you’re driving here, you might want to park at the basement or elevated parking instead of the open space parking right in front of the mall — the open space parking costs a lot more compared.

If you would like to come for lunch or dinner, you may want to make a reservation in advance so that wouldn’t have to wait for the queue in case all the tables in the restaurant are taken. Reach earlier for lunch, before 12:30 in the afternoon would be nice. Try the Korean BBQ Chicken and Dol Sot Pi-Pim-Pam here. If you have four to five people, try the Japanese Pizza.

If you go up to the third floor of Amcorp Mall, you’ll find a couple of restaurants. But none stands out as much as Haeun Khon does. Littered with Asian paraphernalia, this cozy little restaurant offers affordable Koreans staples. Obviously a big hit with the lunch crowd, you’ll even find groups of people dining outside the restaurant, besides McDonald. I think that says alot about the food in this restaurant. If it interests you, they also serve basic Japanese food, like teriyaki chicken etc. I’ve been here a couple of times and I can’t seem to stop ordering the Beef Kimchi Jigae. Eventhough I come out of it worse of wear; sweating profusely and runny nose, I cannot get enough of the soup’s explosion of spicy and sour flavours. This came in generous portion of enoki mushrooms, tofu, glass noodle, chicken and napa cabbage. Some might not be able to take the spiciness of this dish, but if you can handle the heat, by all means try this. Another aspect to their korean meals is their side dishes. It changes day to day but this ensures freshness, which you can tell. The Kimchi Jigae is priced at RM15.90. So do not be deterred by the waiter’s seemingly grumpy face and step right in. Although, there are some days where you might have to wait awhile. I personally prefer to wait until the lunch crowd leaves which is after 2pm.
