Fauna is located in a bustling area that is becoming the craft beer hot spot for Tijuana, Plaza Fiesta. Beer wise they have a fantastic IPA that tastes as good as most San Diego IPAs and a great coffee stout. They have other beers as well depending on the season. Beers are reasonably priced and food is as well. Most of the food is more tapas style, not meant as a meal but prices are great. The first time I visited I just ordered a small mini tostada and it wasn’t very big but was very tasty and the ceviche was good quality. One thing to keep in mind is that they only accept cash, but don’t worry if you happen to show up with US dollars they can give you change in Mexican pesos.

San Diegans are a spoiled bunch. We enjoy delicious, local craft beer on tap nearly everywhere, we have the highest density of taco shops of any US city and we play outside year round. That’s partly why many of us can’t be hassled to venture south to seemingly intimidating Tijuana, often settling for touristy places like Rosarito or Ensenada when we do decide to soak up some Baja. But there’s a huge resurgence happening in Tijuana worth checking out. Case in point: Cerveza Fauna Tasting Room. Located on the upper level of a clustering of bars and restaurants that make up Plaza Fiesta — only a $ 5 taxi ride from the border — this gastropub combines quality micro brews and authentic Baja eats in a warm, beer garden-like atmosphere. Think Tiger! Tiger!, but Mexican. We were greeted quickly and confidently by an English speaking gentleman who provided a thorough rundown of Mexicali-based Cerveza Fauana Brewery’s offerings, describing the characteristics of each type of beer quite knowledgeably. The stout was absolutely outstanding! We ordered plenty of dishes to share — fish, queso and guacamole inspired tapas. The menu rotates based on what’s currently in season. I seem to remember a bowl of nachos that disintegrated into the group nearly immediately and had to be reordered. The place was bustling when we visited on a Friday night with what appeared to be a mostly local crowd mixed with hipsters, beer drinkers, young couples on dates and older folks enjoying an evening out. Great vibe. There’s something special happening in Tijuana. Go down there and taste for yourself!
