Love this place for breakfast. It’s away from the main square, noise and tourists. Eggs and bacon as well as pancakes to suit the discerning Aussie tourist! Great service, a cosy atmosphere, easy blues playing in the background and friendly staff.

I’ve been to numerous places for breakfast in Amsterdam over the years. The majority have fallen very short of my expectations. Especially after you’ve had a real Dutchy cook you breakfast. On a whim with two hungry stomachs, my friend and I decided to try this spot. We were both pleasantly surprised. He is Dutch, so watching him smile when our food came out was a little unusual for him. He had a variation of my Uitsmitter. I was in Heaven. Lots of Bacon and 3 eggs over Kaas and Brood(Cheese and Bread). I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my day. The restaurant is part of a small Hotel. It is very clean and modern. The servers were friendly and fast. I tried to get back for another meal but didn’t get the chance. I will be back in 2 years.

Never experienced worse attention in my life. AVOIDATALLCOSTS! Absolutely unbelievable. No one brought the menu for more than 20 minutes and very rude waitresses.

Cozy café/restaurant with nice staff! Serves breakfast until 11am and then lunch. I had a croissant and yoghurt bowl, both was good! A nice start of a Saturday.

I got to toon almost daily for an espresso at the bar. its quick, friendly and super cheap which i so much appreciate. today i had lunch there for the first time and was really sad. our meal tool 40 minutes to arrive, the waitress was talking to her friend and not bringing us bread which we asked for 3 times, and my shukshaka was pretty bad. the egg white was till clear(so totally not cooked) and the spices were really overwhelming. I’ll just stick to the coffee.

Toon was a wonderful discovery on our weekend jaunt up to Amsterdam. We stayed in the hotel, ate the INCLUDED breakfast and enjoyed the place so much we came back for lunch before hitting the road! This review will be for the food only, and really, this place is worth stopping into for breakfast or lunch if you’re in the area. For breakfast, three of the four of us got the shankshuka. This is poached eggs in a tomato sauce with add-ins available. I got the feta and mushrooms, which was amazing, especially with the thick bread they gave you to sop up every last bit of the tomato sauce. The other breakfast entrée was eggs with salmon on toast, which was tasty if unexpected. Get the shankshuka… you won’t be unhappy. Their orange juice is fresh squeezed, and although I didn’t try it, my friend can’t stop thinking about it over a month later. And I can’t stop thinking about their cappuccino. Literally the BEST cappuccino I have had, in Europe, in America… anywhere. I was obsessed and must have had five of them. For lunch, my three compatriots got the club sandwich and were all very pleased with their selection. I got the bagel with salmon, which is basically the perfect lox bagel, which I had been missing since moving to Europe. Capers, onions, cream cheese and salmon on a tasty, tasty bagel. If you, like me, have been missing this flavor profile, do yourself a favor and stop in to Toon.

Coffee-Kitchen-Sleeping…

Toon is actually Hotel Toon. You would not expect it if you just walk in for a coffee, lunch or dinner, but this place also has 5 hotel rooms. They are nice, says the Parool newspaper, I personally have no idea, only went to the restaurant for lunch :) Toon opened a few weeks ago already. I strangely did not notice this, even though I cycle past this place at least 5 times a week. After reading about it I decided this place needed to be tested. So we did that today. It is pretty small and the tables are quite close to each other. The place looks nice and there are fun details, like the record player for the music. You also have to look up to the ceiling, it’s beautiful. We went here for a late lunch, but you can also come for breakfast and dinner(the pizzas are cheap!). We lunch I ordered a salad with lentils, sundried tomatoes, beetroot and gorgonzola. It was good and only 5,50 euros though it was a lot. Nice! Salads are usually much more expensive than sandwiches. Good for me it was the other way around here, since I prefer a salad. The sandwiches weren’t cheap, they varied in prices but a few of them were 8,50 while not being particularly generous in size so that’s quite expensive. The thing that got quite annoying when the place started to fill up with more people, was that everyone bumped into you and your table. There was almost no space to move, very, very annoying. If not for this I would have rated this place 4 stars. The food was good, cute place but very small and to much tables for the size of the room. It’s a good spot when it is not to busy though, or if you a sitting with your back against a wall.

Hey, where has the Hotel de Stern gone to? Relax, it’s still in the same place. The place has been refurbished though, and looks much better. They even have a nice café as the entry point to the hotel — Toon. This is a nice café, right close to Rembrandtplein, but not the typical turistic souless/cheesy cafés we find, this one has more style to it. Nice music on the background, good staff and not too expensive. Tip: they say Pizza is on from 11:00 to 18:00 — it’s a lie! Just kidding, but they didn’t have those ready when me or 3 other different sets of customers asked for it. We want our cholesterol, damn it! Nice to drop by though :)
