History

Established in 2001.

Having travelled around the world by bicycle, foot, sail boat and bus for 13 years I was lucky to start a backpacker business in Auckland city. As the airport grew we decided to jump at the opportunity to be next to it so in 2006 moved to Skyway Lodge. Just brilliant.

It is like a countryside town around the airport but with the convenience for travellers of camper van and car rentals. Hundreds of them.

We see the desire of young people to meet other people rather than being stuck in a room. We have expanded lounge, kitchen and pool areas where you can chat and swap your experiences. A real community that changes everyday.

Having grown up with older brothers and sisters who travelled to Australia, Europe, North and South America, and even the Solomon Islands in the Pacific in the late 1960’s and 1970’s I was champing at the bit to see the world outside island NZ myself.

The opportunity came for a summer in California while at University in 1983 then later to sail to South America (escaping my first job) in 1986. What adventure and excitement. So many people and so many new ideas and languages.

While in Florida I met a man who said he had ridden a bicycle through Cina in the 1930’s. Wow. I decided to do the same but fell in love with Japan on the way.

From the rush of Tokyo I decided to settle back in quiet peaceful Auckland.(compared with bustling Tokyo).

No one would hire a wanderer like me so I got a leg up from my parents and bought the small back packing biz. Met wife. Had 3 kids. Stumbled onto Yelp.
