Located in the centre of Auckland Zoo. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seatings. Family friendly as expected, lots of kids around, and has a few high chairs around. Serves pre-made fast foods i.e. burgers, pizza, chips. You can tell that its been sitting in the warmer for a while, and not the most exciting flavours. Good selection of cold drinks, mostly Charles and Phoenix drinks. There is also a coffee bar, actually makes ok coffee. Essentially its self service here. This is a place that makes you look forward to your next meal. 10% off if you have an annual pass.

Although I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat at Darwin’s, it is certainly a good stopping point for lunch to get some sustenance and a spot of rest after walking at length about the grounds of the Auckland Zoo. I was famished when we arrived at the zoo, so it wasn’t gazing at several hides of animals that prompted my hunger, and it wasn’t long before we diverted to this culinary oasis in the midst of a perfusion of greenery, reddened earth, moats, waterways, aviaries, birds, and animals. And, while the food was not great, it was filling and passable. Here I had individual slices of Ham & Pineapple that were thin and snappy on the edges but fair overall. And, a Bajilo Chilli Beef Burger with Pickled Onion, Roasted Red Peppers, Cole Slaw & Cheese on a Paninied bun was freshly prepared with pre-packaged beef patties that were thick enough to easily be a quarter pound in weight. Although cooked well done, the burger was interesting and satisfying. And, Hot Chips(thick French Fries) and Potato Wedges were both pretty good. Once refortified with food, my wife and I pushed on to further explore the intriguing environs that envelope this restaurant.
