This wharf should be better considering tourists are always crossing the harbour to wander around Devonport. There’s work underway for cafés and outdoor seating that’ll be an improvement, but there’ll still be the same underwhelming collection of shops. I prefer to skip walking through and just take the outside walkway. It was pretty good to see that for $ 25 there’s a bus service right outside which shuttles you to some of the more scenic places, ie up Mt Victoria, over to Cheltenham Beach etc.

While I wouldn’t disagree that the inside of this ferry terminal building needs a serious overhaul (someone call that Ty guy off Extreme Makeover Wharf edition!) hah. I. e The faults which other reviewers have listed already; the façade of the building actually has a quaint charm that gels with the rest of Devonport itself.
A rustic sort of understated calm that may hear the taunts you throw at it but won’t react at all. It fits in this setting is what I’m trying to say.
Just like the Central city Ferry Terminal fits the sort of lifestyle encapsulated by ‘big city life’, this building has a vibe all it’s own.
And who could give a place such a bad review when just outside it has a patch of perfect golden sand where you can catch the most amazing views of Auckland City. Take some fish n chips along with you, you won’t find a better spot.

Devonport Wharf serves its purpose as a ferry wharf just fine. It would be great if they just left it as a ferry wharf. Unfortunately the genius that developed it decided it should also include a big building with shops in it. As everyone else has already noted, the shops are perpetually closed which is just leaves the place feeling dead, cold and sterile. The only saving grace is the coffee place nearest Pier 1 that serves up a decent mocha. Also the chick that runs the little art gallery selling portraits and paintings of Auckland is pretty good at what she does. Otherwise this building is just a massive waste of space in dire need of a makeover. But as a previous reviewer said, it’s not actually that bad looking from the outside. Just needs more happening inside to justify its existence.

Why is everything always closed here? When I lived in Devonport and was catching the ferry 5 or 6 times a week (at pretty normal times) I would wander through the ferry terminal and wonder to myself; «why?» Maybe they only like to open on weekends for the tourist crowds because, let’s be honest, the shops are pretty touristy. I just think it’s a shame because it’s such a cool location for a shop but with most things closed there’s a really weird ghost-​town vibe that you get from the place. The only shop I frequented there was the café (watch this space for a specific review) and they do pretty decent coffees and hot chocolate and it is a nice place to wait for the ferry. At «rush hour» in the ferry terminal, such as 7.30 — 9am, it’s pretty busy and you might not get a seat while you wait for the ferry, but all in all this place is ok. Not great just sufficient.

Devonport Wharf is one place that can do with a big fat overhaul. Why should this prime piece of real estate be limited to boring little shops that are always closed when you do want to visit them? Why can’t they change the layout to feature small market type stores, add a lively coffee shop and bar, and give the place a good overhaul?
I use the ferry on a regular basis, and this part of the wharf is very user friendly, but the rest should be used to better effect. I would assume that licensing issues and permits must be the reason why this place is so boring.
I don’t know the statistics of people passing through there on a daily basis versus the cost of rental space, but I’m sure that with the right stores you could make a killing.

I practically lived here when I worked at the ticket office and god, I hated it. Not the job or my office but just that entire building. As many have said already, it is filled with shops — little boutiquey ones, a hairdresser, a bunch of food places and a little dairy. More often than not these are closed.
The place gets a lot of traffic during the peak ferry times but during the day, it’s dead. The building itself is also really really ugly, and is in sore need of an upgrade. It’s just such a dull, depressing place to be.
The one redeeming factor of this place is the excellent Kintamani Bali Café that opened there last year. I can’t stand the coffees from the coffee place, the food from the fish’n’chip takeaway store was always incredibly salty and overpriced, and the dairy was okay, I guess. I don’t know why anyone would walk through here when they can walk down to the ferry on the bridge outside, really.

Devonport Wharf frustrates me. It’s right on the water (obviously), in one of the most beautiful places in Auckland and it is so meh it’s almost unbelievable. Firstly everything is pretty much always closed. Like even in normal business hours, it is dead. Secondly, even if it was open, they have the weirdest selection of stores. I can’t even pinpoint what most of the stores are because they’re so mediocre, and they change all the time.
It’s just like no one really cares about it, but they should. It could be awesome. They could have a cool restaurant, cafes, bars. Or just knock it down, lay down some astroturf and have a mini-​golf.
Hey, but walk out of the wharf and you’re in beautiful Devonport. My advice? Skip the inside and walk down the side.

If you’re coming to Devonport via ferry then the Devonport Wharf is the first thing you’ll see. As such, its rather disappointing. The shops are mediocre and tend to have a quick turn around, and the building itself could be much more exciting. I hear its in the running for a major refurbishment and as a major tourism gateway I really hope this is the case. That being said its a beautiful location looking directly across to Auckland city and the ferry service is really good (if not a tad pricey). Also good for fishing off.
