I live and work in the Bay and I visit this wonderful store run by Lance & Ming and with the wonderful help of Sonia, Phoenix and of course Uncle Tom, every day. It not only has the most delicious and yummy food, sweet and savoury, but the service is always with a smile, apologies if you have to wait more than a couple of mins for anything, and just genuine hospitality. Lance and Ming you have done wonders to this little corner bakery and we appreciate all that you do and give of yourself and for providing us with such wonderful treats. I wish you every success in every possible way. Magic! Trisha x :)

This is one of a few bakeries on the same street in St.Heliers. The prices of all three are fairly similar. This morning I grabbed a coffee and a apple pastry. I thought that the pastry was of similar quality to the others but not the best coffee. A lot of their other items looked great as well. I’d shop around the other spots and see which one has the exact treat you are looking for.

I don’t know what the hell a home cookery is, something like you walk through the door and you find yourself in your mum’s dining room with meatloaf waiting on the table. But nah it’s just a normal bakery. It doesn’t have too much to offer in the way of selection, you know just your staple bakery items, cakes, slices, pastries, sandwiches etc. I must say though the pies here are fabulous. Flaky pies made the old fashioned way; that is with actual meat inside and not just gravy. Lots of meat too, the steak pies have plenty, and the gravy is thick and tasty. If you are in the area then you should try this place for yourself, even if it’s just for the pies. You won’t be disappointed.

This was one of two bakeries I frequented during a work stint in St Helier’s, and this one was less impressive. There was nothing wrong with it, maybe it just didn’t have that special touch or didn’t make my favourite slices. Or maybe I wasn’t satisfactorily overwhelmed by the options. I remember I got an egg sandwich from there on one occasion, and you can’t really go wrong with an egg sandwich. The service was fine, just unremarkable. This bakery does its job — that is, makes decent pastries, pies and snacks — but doesn’t really have an X-factor to bring me back.

They try to trick you by calling it Home Cookery even though it’s a bakery. This is a simple, no-frills kind of bakery that takes me back to my childhood — ah yes, the simplier days before fancy window displays and highfalutin marketing. When a pie was a pie and you warmed it up and stuck it in a warmer and that was good enough. That said, don’t let the humble appearance fool you — there are some mighty tasty treats to be found at Home Cookery, and the prices are as reminiscent of the past as I am. I’ll admit I haven’t sampled a wide variety from this bakery as some of the stuff looks a bit too rustic for my tastes, but it’s often busy with workmen-type people who I’m sure appreciate big chunks of sugary glutinous nosh. The savoury muffins shouldn’t be missed, they’re some of the best in town.
