My first time here. Very impressed! Walked in, table’s were full so thats a good sign, found a lovely sunny spot by the window at the back after ordering a Hash Stack. A previous review below got me hankering for it. Was not dissapointed. Even though they were busy the staff were very friendly and attentive and the food made it out in lighting quick time! Hash browns looked hand made with great texture, thickness and flavor. Egg was runny and was absorbed well into the 2 fluffy ciabatta pieces of bread. Bacon was crispy but not overcooked and there was enought to have a good chunk with every delicious fork full. If I had any gripe it was only a small one & was with the avocado. Was borderline raw but they can be hard to gauge especially when cooking en volume and under the gun so no points lost there. Will be back here for sure. The list on the menu deserves a good trial & if my first experiance is emulated I am sure this will be good eats!

Enjoyed a date and almond smoothie and gluten free orange and almond cake. They had so much yummy food to choose from on the menu and in their cabinet. Definitely will be going back

Been meaning to check this one out for a while now and got to today for a late lunch! Always wondered about this one– having driven past it on multiple occasions. Was surprised by the roomy interior and enjoyed the slightly elevated level at the back near the wide window with a decent view. Got the Thai chicken sandwich which was a delight. They plated it very well with vinegar/sauce around the edge of the plate and was toasted so it was a warming temperature. Chicken was well done and the bread was lovely. Friend got the fruit cheesecake which she said was a good one. Must come back to try their menu– not just the great cabinet sandwich!

Good food, excellent coffee and friendly service — easily the best café in Birkenhead

Despite only being about half full the service was slow — the staff weren’t exactly busy as one of them had time to read a paper. The order was eventually taken and to be fair came fairly quickly. Food was ok but it would have been nice to have been told the hash browns were being replaced by a potato rosti(which was greasy and soggy). Underwhelming.

Came here on Easter Monday, there was a 10% ser charge, which was acceptable, however the service I could not forgive. No greeting when we arrived, so we asked one of the other customers what to do and they said they’d gone in an ordered. The board menu had no prices or descriptions, it was only when I went to the counter to make a blind order that I saw the pile of menu’s next to the useless, angry looking woman. Anyway, I ordered the vegetarian omelette… it took like 45 minutes to arrive(no apologies for the astounding wait either) and to be honest wasn’t that great, totally under seasoned and the salad it came with was pretty average. I liked the mushrooms in it… but you know, that’s just mushrooms tasting good. I don’t know. Maybe today was just a bad day… the food other people were eating looked quite good, and other reviews seem to think it’s pretty decent, but this just proves inconsistency. A gamble you’ll have to judge for yourself.

I work near Tongue and Groove so it’s my regular morning coffee joint. The café was sold in 2012 so I was a bit nervous that the quality might suffer as a result. Thankfully the new owners have kept things top notch. They did mix up the menu a little bit, but just offered a new range of great food. They have a regular $ 10 special salad for lunch, which is great value. In winter they offer a delicious kumara and bacon soup — perfect for a drizzly, cold winter’s day. They use Allpress coffee and most of the baristas do a good job. I also try to keep my diet«paleo» so the paleo breakfast for $ 17 is a great way of having brunch but keeping healthy. Not quite as delicious as an Eggs Benedict, but much better for the waistline.

I was sitting in this café enjoying a coffee with some Facebook time wasting, and the next table over had an enormous burger brought over to them. I couldn’t help but stare, I was jealous, that burger looked amazing. I assure you, it was not long before I had one of my own sitting in front of me, the very next day in fact. I was right to assume that it was good, they are very liberal with there ingredients, and while it can amount to a fairly expensive lunch, there is no way you are leaving that place still hungry. Aside from the huge burger they also serve up a generous portion of chips. Reasonably good coffee, but definitely a worthwhile stop for the burger.

Popped into the very popular café eatery in the middle of Birkenhead shops, mainly because I wanted to sample there food, but had previously seen the menu and noticed lots of mouthwatering choices. Accompanied by two toddlers and four adults, and being the token neighbourhood local I decided on Tongue and Groove. I found fantastic seating for our large group, on a large leather lounge suite next to the front door overlooking the bustling street and sidewalk, and a massive box of toys for the toddlers to enjoy, perfect! The menu has a fantastic choice of breakfast and brunch meals, infused with fresh local produce, I tried the Eggs Benedict with a side of salmon and avocado plus a few slices of hearty whole grain bread, and a mocha. Food arrived within twenty minutes and coffee five minutes. Great meal enjoyed and washed down with a great cup of warming caffeine. Very efficient and friendly service. Über cool vintage National Geographic’s are stacked on a book shelf, now thats my kind of read. A definite must for coffee, and a slice of cake too.
