Don’t let the location put you off, yes it is in a university food court type more or less but the sushi here is incredibly fresh, you get to choose your own and there is a great variety to choose from. I came here often while at uni, I dislike the sushi places in malls generally because they are all about quantity, 8 pieces of mostly rice for $ 6, I don’t want 8 pieces of sushi and here at Uni sushi I can have only 5 or 6 pieces and only pay $ 1-$ 1.20 for each one and the sushi isn’t really dense with medium grain white rice either. Also uni sushi is very busy, as you can imagine, turn over is very high which means sushi is being made fresh all day. This also means that the lines can get really long around lunch time, longer than any other food place around here which just goes to show how good the sushi is. I only ever bought the vegetable sushi from here because I am vegan but often they would have a seaweed filled sushi too, very yum. While I cannot speak for the other sushi varieties, I was always pleased with uni sushi.

If you don’t think about it you could almost be convinced that Uni was a Japanese word. It’s not, it just means that this sushi place is on university grounds, and is therefore not poisonous but not great. As far as sushi goes, or sushi in the central city, this place is pretty mediocre. As far as on-campus food goes, it’s pretty good. Is this because Auckland’s sushi is of a particularly high standard? No, it’s because university food is terrible. The standard is low enough that because this sushi isn’t entirely made of grease-soaked gristle and $ 16 a portion, somehow it comes out on top. Objectively speaking this place isn’t bad. It’s pretty unsurprising sushi — think St. Pierre’s or the like. Nothing too outrageous, but they do the standards well enough. Like most places in that food area though, it gets pretty hectic around the middle of the day. Don’t expect to just nip in quickly between lectures.
