St. John Inn

My girlfriend and I were pretty happy with this place. Nice quaint hotel within walking distance of the Cruz Bay downtown (shops and restaurants), Dolphin Market, and the trailhead (National park area). Good price, nice clean (and colorful) rooms, and incredibly friendly staff. We would definitely stay here again.

Great little inn in an expensive island. The inn has maximized the space and building with lively caribbean colors, well kept deck space, open air complimentary continental breakfast with tables, chairs, umbrellas on the deck, small pool on back deck with loungers, hammock, pillows, single adjacent poolside restroom, verdant plants, hummingbirds. Complimentary use of beach towels, beach chairs, insulated lunch bags, fins, snorkels, masks. Complimentary rum punch each afternoon. Honor bar with soft drinks and single serving wine bottles. Ice machine in open air kitchen. Our room had nice AC unit, comfortable queen bed with mattress topper, TV, mini fridge, microwave, mugs, sofa, bath amenities, colorful towels. Short walk to/​from passenger ferry, restaurants, and shops, short drive to/​from car ferry.

Our recent trip to St John was incredible and this inn was definitely a big part of that success. A group of 4 of us decided to stay here for the price — it looked like a great deal set right in the middle of everything in Cruz Bay. St John Inn exceeded our expectations. For the price, the fact that they put out such a varied cold breakfast is incredible. They also served complimentary rum punch at sunset every evening. We could easily walk to the local shops, grocery, restaurants, and bars. Saloman beach was a walkable distance — with some hiking (wear your sneakers!!)
I agree with Karen — if you are looking for a cookie-​cutter resort experience, go stay at the Westin. But if you want a less commercialized, more personal feel, I recommend it here. Paige and Vicki provided all kinds of local knowledge — any time we had a questions about food, groceries, beaches, etc. they gave us a honest and very useful suggestion. When we told them about the wedding we were attending, they warned us about the bugs and gave us a bottle of bug spray to bring with us! Saved our skin (literally)… They had sunscreen, bug spray, snorkel gear, beach chairs, beach towels, coolers, coozies, etc. available for free — mostly left behind from other guests. My only complaint was that the pool is really small, but we spent most of our time at the beach anyway (it’s St John after all!) We loved the brightly colored décor — perfect for a beach vacation.
All in all, I very strongly recommend this inn if you’re interested in a cheap stay that’s different from the resort style.

This hotel is horrible! It cheats customer! I booked this hotel with total rate of $ 243. The reservation was confirmed, but the second day, I received email from St John Inn to state the price would be increased to $ 607.5, because when I booked the hotel, their website showed the wrong price, this is ridiculous, my reservation was confirmed, and they don’t want to honor their price. I can not accept the $ 607.5 price, so I canceled it, and the staff told me they will fully refund my deposit of $ 121.5. However, I waited for more than one month, and didn’t receive the refund, I contacted them, and they refunded only $ 96.5 to me, they said they charged me $ 25 processing fee, that is ridiculous, I argue with them, they agreed it is their fault, which caused me to cancel the reservation, but they refused to refund me the $ 25, and the lady was very very rude, she disconnected the call rudely. So be careful, your rate maybe increased even you have your confirmation! Don’t book this hotel, you will regret!

Awesome resort!!! All the pampering and all the extras you need for a great vacation!!! The food at the bar and grill by the pool is excellent!!! Their morning breakfast foods (hot stuff) sucks large stick with fruit cereal and oats breads they have a fancy schmancy restaurant there stay away !!! Stick with the bar and grill

If you want luxury when you’re visiting St. John, you’re better off staying at the Westin or Caneel Bay Resorts. But if you just need a friendly, comfortable place to sleep and clean up in, then the St. John Inn is one of the best bargains on the island.
Set on a hillside, the St. John Inn (formerly the Cruz Inn) is an old, rambling, bright blue guesthouse that is constantly being renovated by the owner, Dave Wolf. The layout of the rooms and the whole inn is rather irregular, but quaint. Everything is painted in soft pastel colors.
We were expecting one tiny room for the relatively low price we were paying, but instead we had a sort of suite with a hallway, bathroom, sitting room and bedroom. Granted, the lighting may be a little dim; the paint on the walls may be a little chipped; the windows have screens covered by hurricane shutters instead of glass; the water pressure in the showers is rather low; and the pool out in back is modest, not Olympic standard, in size. However, if you’re not going to spend a lot of time at your hotel or in your room (and on St. John, who would?), it’s perfectly adequate.
Every room has a private bathroom, air conditioning, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, cable TV, and free WiFi access. Best of all, they provide a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and a free Rum Punch Sunset Happy Hour every evening on the main deck, as well as free beach towels, chairs, coolers, and umbrellas for beach trips. The staff, although small, is very friendly and accommodating, and provides the same services, such as restaurant and tour reservations, as the fancier, more expensive hotels. The manager, April, is especially helpful.
The inn is located within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and ferry docks of downtown Cruz Bay. There are also two jeep rental companies and a Spanish restaurant called The Spot Light located down the hill from the inn that draw a lot of the local people, but don’t let it put you off. Everyone is very friendly, especially if you’re friendly to them first, and they love it when visitors drop in.
Warning: There’s a rooster somewhere down the hillside who will wake you up at 3:30 AM every morning with his crowing. Since all of the Virgin Islands are infested with roosters, however, there’s really no getting away from this. Bring ear plugs and you’ll be fine. To make up for the rooster, there’s also a resident dog named Killer (who’s named that because he’s obviously not, although he might lick you to death) who will come keep you company on the deck every morning.
All in all, an inexpensive, quaint little place with a lot of character, and a friendly, at-​home atmosphere that matches perfectly with the casual, laid-​back style of island life.
