Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House

It’s good to visit the Dock and Pump-​House to really understand just how large the Titanic was, but unless you’re really interested in pumps and how they worked in 1912, this attraction may seem a little dull. I took my Dad, he loved it, but he’s big into ‘how things work’(to the point that he was taking photos of the movie).
If you’re there in time to do one of the guided tours I think that would be a smart idea, otherwise you’re just kind of wandering aimlessly, which is still okay, but getting those little tidbits and stories might be a bit nicer too. I’d get a combo pass from the Titanic museum and give it a visit, but if it’s a hassle don’t go out of your way.

This graving dock was once the largest in the world (in 1911) and is an extraordinary engineering feat for its time. Here you can see the pumphouse, view videos and exhibits of the facility, and descend the stairs into the graving dock itself.
Guided tours available during the busy months. Video exhibits, and Android/​iPhone apps to supplement your tour also. Make sure if you are using the app to download the video components before you leave the ticketing area.

This place is awesome. Everyone goes to the museum, but you really need to visit the dry dock. The dry dock is still the same condition when Titanic launched. It’s amazing this place continued to build ships for 100 years. You really need to walk to the bottom of the dock.

This is a engineering feat! To dry dock boats like the Titanic, they created these special slips that pumped out the water surrounding such huge boats in 90 minutes. This dock was used until 2001, that’s how good it is at what it does! Very cool to see how it works and well done attraction.
Has a good café, too!

We did a few Titanic things in Belfast and this was totally awesome! I can’t stress how cool it was. It’s was cheap for the guided tour as well! They are so informative of the history and the pictures were such a nice touch since it was right were you are standing. Going down into the dry dock was amazing, it felt like we were stepping on Titanic sludge and history itself!
The only thing that could have been better were the videos inside the pump house because the 3d seemed redundant for a lot of it. But it’s still worth the small price to experience the tour.

Located in Belfast’s most famous historical hot spot this tourist attraction is one of the city’s most exciting new ventures. Over the next number of years The Titanic Quarter will be built and developed as a prime tourist spot. Admittedly, we happened across it totally by accident (we were going to another building linked with Titanic close by, we failed to see the room so decided to detour around the docks)
And so we discovered the story behind Belfast’s maritime magic at the dry dock and pump house. This area was once the very heart of Harland & Wolff during the construction of the Titanic.
The dry dock is HUGE. This is not an exaggeration. It was… gargantuan! (Imagine getting a bath in that bad boy! Ha, think of the amount of water and all those fluffy bubbles! Sorry, out of crazy Suzi B land)
Back to boat… we decided not to take one of the guided tours (you can choose to do so inside) so instead we dandered slowly around by ourselves. I’d recommend taking the left side so you can check out the life size model of the Titanic’s prow (wow!) Then continue on and look at the entrance to the lower dock. The steps lead down to the lower level. It’s interesting to see the ramp which was used to carry all the building materials, and that chain. Boy that is old! When you think how old this place is, there’s so much history and life to it, even though it’s deserted.
So once you’ve had enough here, go on to the end of the dock and see if you can spot the few leaks in the gate. Scary, isn’t it! Once you reach the end and are at the waters edge, if you’re a total tourist, which I am, you can stretch your arms Rose style in Titanic and pretend to be flying. I did, I’m sorry, its fun! The views up this end are stunning. Take a look at the machinery currently working, building the ships of today. It’s obviously machine now not man, the dockers life has gone.
I found this all incredibly interesting. You can go in to the Pump house where there’s a small café situated as well as some more informative points and videos to watch. Look for the picture showing the rudders of the Titanic. Look at the size of these compared to the dock. Mind blowing!
This would be a great place to bring visitors. Exceptionally informative and interesting. I could not believe I’d never been here never mind heard of it. I’ll def be back to check out more and Its 100% getting brilliant recommendations from me.
