Came here last year when it was having its Oktoberfest suggestion. I decided to indulge in just the food part of the celebration as German beer can no longer compete with something excellent brewed in the UK. In this case the beer was by the top notch Roosters brewery(from Yorkshire). Their German influenced ale ‘Der Kaiser’ was an extremely interestingly flavoured beer that was tasty with an even tastier aftertaste. The posh wurst with goats cheese was good as was the potato salad i got with it. Ordering the sauerkraut though was a triumph of hope over experience as I don’t think I have had a good sauerkraut outside of Germany, and this was once again the case. My wife said that her chicken burger was really rather good. The chips though came in so much oil that the last handful were completely submerged and gross. There was football on, with sound. This meant the rowdy people that always come with football were in attendance and being generally lairy and inconsiderate. Nice place otherwise though.

Old timey English pub with a menu that blends traditional and contemporary. They have a great curry special on certain nights, and the curry sauce they offer with fish and chips is really good. Reasonably priced – nice staff.

This became one of our favourites whilst visiting Chester, set right next to the city walls in a lovely old building with beams and a lovely real fire. Great friendly atmosphere and good selection of real ales and plenty other beers for everyone’s taste. The food is up market Pub food but not too expensive, we ordered off the burger selection, 1 Big Pig Burger which was made from minced pork and black pudding topped with bacon, sliced sausage, pulled pork and cheese all with Cajun spiced fries, it was excellent. My wife had the chicken majo burger, large breast with breadcrumbs with salad etc with chunky garlic butter coated chips. Both were excellent, a great Pub with the benefit of 2 others close by– The Cross Keys and the Brewery Tap

One of Chesters finest treasures, i like the style of the pub its very old and very unique with lots of character and a real must visit place if your in Chester. The food is of a good standard also and i would recommend the steak which i have had there many times. the beer is different from the norm too, its all okells stuff which i had never tasted before until i went there. They rotate the beers all the time but they always seem to have the okells bitter on which is my favourite pint when im there. the only minor downside to the place is that its at the bottom of a hill and i have too walk back up the hill into town which after having a few pints can be a bit of a challenge. i still give it 5 stars through because if i ever win the lottery i will move to Chester and be a barfly in this place.

Good cask beer, not much choice. but great pub to relax in. An upstairs bar suggests it gets noisy pm.

Right by the city walls, we came here for lunch the other day. They had a good range of ales on tap, and the barman recommended a Manx brew that glided gently down the throat as we decided what to have. I had the steak pie with chips and veg(carrots and peas), brother had the chili con carne(with chips) and mother had the bacon and brie baguette. The food arrived fairly promptly and all our dishes were consumed with abandon until we were all stuffed and couldn’t finish. Mum frequently can’t finish her meals, but bruv and I rarely struggle from that affliction, so you know the portions were generous, as well as being tasty. As a bonus, you can start to walk it all off again by doing a lap of the walls afterward.

This is a traditional pub with a good range of different beers. it is very Oldy Worldy. I have never had food here and I don’t think it serves food. As a pub it’s great — nothing fancy a real pubby pub! The nearest car parking is the multi storey on Pepper Street.

Located just off the city walls and within spitting distance of the river The Bear and Billet is great place to eat and drink. The building in which the pub is set is an old black and white affair in tudor style seen throughout Chester. The selection of beer is pretty expansive and the quality is excellent. The food served at the pub is good value and exceptionally tasty.

This is a typical olde style pub in the middle of Chester. The building itself is actually quite striking — great original tudor features. Inside the main ground floor is laid out like a typical pub — one thing I didn’t like was the metal tables which I found to be quite cold and uncomfortable. I think the big draw of this place is the range of real ales that it serves up. I’m not a hige fan of real ale, but for those who are this place will probably tick a number of boxes. The upstairs area is smaller but quite comfortable — with extra seating which is great on busy nights. This is probably not a bad place to stop in if you’re walking into the city via the Handbridge area.
