My husband and I had a wedding reception in The Slaughtered Lamb, the Cross Keys’ lovely upstairs function room. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I couldn’t have asked for better service from Jane the owner and the staff working the event(very accomodating). They let us put up all of our decorations in advance and really made us feel like the room was our own(they also put up with our very boisterous dancing!). We ordered the buffet for our guests and were very impressed by the food– particularly the steak and ale pie and lasagna. Both terrific. Lots of compliments from guests. House wine was also nice. Highly recommend their function room service! Also, beautiful downstairs interior.

After, maybe, 20 years, I recently revisited this pub. My memory of it is that was really drab and boring. But not now. This was a good experience. Yes, it was an afternoon with sunshine through the windows, but I’ll go back. Only downside is tied to one brewery.

good décor, plenty of space between tables Poor food, value for money and service is simply terrible I met a friend for lunch this week. I struggled to find anything on the very short menu to order. I decided on the salad(can’t go wrong with that — so I thought!). It was £6.95 and very very small, limp handful of lettuce, one quarter slice of cucumber, one small piece of sun dried tomato, lots of green beans, olives and cold sliced potato. The worst was the tuna which was warm and raw in the middle(like it had been grilled and left on the side waiting for someone to order it) and the one boiled egg that was undercooked and cold. Coffee took more than 20 minutes so we cancelled that and asked for the bill. Really really unexciting menu, over priced, unattentive staff and a great dissappointment espeially as the décor is beautiful.

This pub is a bit of a hidden gem for great pub food at lunchtime! I can’t comment on evening time as I haven’t been in the evening, but I suspect that it is just as good. On Bridge Street, it’s slightly off the main shopping drag, which makes it perfect for a quieter lunch. They have a good range of sandwiches and baguettes and they all come with chips and salad for around £5-£6. This great value for money and you come away full and happy. We sometimes come here for a drink after Chester races and staff are always welcoming. I believe you can reserve tables if needed/wanted. A little hidden gem in the centre of Chester!
