Traditional pub with a nautical theme. Was fairly quiet when I visited during the mid afternoon. Nice selection of cask ales, at typical city centre prices. Didn’t see wifi available. It’s yet another pub the Beatles drank at, but this pub doesn’t overwhelm you with Beatles as some of the other nearby pubs do. The décor is nautical, given Liverpool’s nautical and Titanic history.

Nice inventory pub with lots of old ships around the walls, celebrating Liverpool’s naval history. Lovely place although one of the beers I had(called Passion Fruit) was terrible. Had a TCP taste, which a beer expert told me indicates an infection at the brewery. That, the fact my other pint was ok and the great look to the place means I’ll let it off with 3 stars

Now this is what I call a pub. A wonderful little tavern of polished wood and brass, the White Star is the kind of pub you expect to find an Edwardian ship’s First Mate getting drunk on whiskey and ranting about his captain. Named after the shipping company that pushed the Titanic out to sea and left it to fend for itself against the big, nasty iceberg, the White Star pub was also a favourite of the omnipresent Beatles, who were apparently shunned from the nearby Grapes for being too scruffy. The back room was where they would receive post-gig wages from then-manager Allan Williams, who would later find infamy as the man who gave them away. There’s a booth with brass plaques and photographs, but thankfully that’s about it. It’s refreshing not having it crammed down your throat like every other bloody place in the surrounding area. Owing to the herds of post-war prostitutes that swarmed the city, the White Star pub didn’t get ladies toilets until 1987. Don’t worry though women(I know they hang on my every word), the place has facilities for you now. You just have to climb stairs to get to them. Blame the hookers for that one.

Mightily impressed by this city centre boozer when I visited here with a few mates as part of a beery cultural trip to Liverpool on 12 September. The real ale was on top form(a lovely Bowland bitter) and the red leather seats looked classy and were really comfortable. Plenty of memorabilia to look at, whilst you enjoy your pint. One of my favorite pubs in town.

this is a bit of an old mans pub. I’ve only been in there a couple of times, but both times it made me feel uncomfortable. that could have been the time of day i went in, and it might be different of an evening, but i get the impression that this place has its regulars during the day, and any new person is treated with suspicion. I found the drink prices to be average, pretty much the same as elsewhere, and they offered the usual range of ales and spirits. I dont feel that there is anything about this pub that makes it stand out from others, in fact, had it not been for a friend pointing it out, i would have walked past it again, as it gets lost in the myriad of pubs and clubs in close proximity to it that do more to advertise themselves and draw new clientiele in.

Now here is a pub for all. History well we’re told the Beatles drank here, but around this area every pub claims that. The only difference is this one was actually in business at the time. Beer, well it excellent even those who prefer good beer should be happy. Atmosphere, well try it on a Friday or Saturday night because it bounces. So give the White Star a try because you may get a pleasant surprise.
