When I lived in the area I can’t say I ever bought or rented anything here but I did spend an inordinate of time fondling the beautiful costumes in here. If high quality corsets, decadent full-on burlesque and top-to-toe fancy dress is what you’re after then it would be worth splashing some cash on their outfits. Expensive yes, but for a reason, aside from being amazing standalone pieces they’re also impeccably made. If you really want to push the boat out they also do commissions.

This shop is my ideal dressing up box — full of real wow-factor dresses, corsets and accessories with a goth/burlesque/vintage fantasy princess sort of vibe. I stumbled upon it a few months ago on my way to see a gig and had a quick chat with the owner who seemed very lovely and encouraged me to come back to try on some stuff. I’d definitely rent an outfit to wear for a gig or in a video but I imagine it’d be too expensive to do it very regularly. After visiting the website I’ve contacted them a few times to enquire about the dressmaking classes but have yet to hear back — I’d love to learn how to make some of the amazing concoctions they have in the shop. I also hear some are for sale so must make another visit soon to find out more.

If you need a truly fancy costume then I can recommend Prangsta. They did me a nice gentleman traveller getup for the White Mischief steampunk night, with a vintage suit, waistcoat, top hat etc. The staff were very helpful. It looks like the range of dresses, corsets and masks they have for the ladies is even more impressive. However, renting from them is quite expensive, so this is for very special occasions only.

Napoleon, Mr. Darcy, Pin-up, Lady of the Mannor, they have it all! This is not your avaarage costume shop, really they take a true historical aproach to what they sell, they even have design classes with the owner of the shop. It is so overwheming comming in it, they have all that you might need, and you can either rent or have a bespoke costume on what ever you might fancy.

Wow heaven — if you are looking for a fantastic costume made by a true professional Costumier then stop by Prangsta and visit Mel. This isn’t cheap and cheerful, don’t bother if you want a space man or Darth Vadar suit, this is the real thing. View the website to get a great idea of what you’re aiming for. If you fancy learning to sew then ask them about their excellent classes that Mel hosts in her workshop in Deptford — great value for money and you can learn the basics upwards. The talent from the team here is unrivalled and you will not be disappointed if you commission a piece from them and most of the materials the team use are recylced fabrics. I’m a fan and a one of her students — never picked up a sewing needle in my life but have a fully boned corset, and two dresses to show for the classes over 6 months.
