I would say Wasabi serves its purpose! Ouch, a little harsh okay. It’s good sushi, and they know what they’re doing. It’s perfect for a quick lunch between meetings, and they have good offers on(6 sushi dishes + miso soup for £8.95) but a little on the pricey side. I think they’d get more people through the doors if they had cheaper lunchtime deals on, something for on the go commuters who just need to grab a bite. However, it’s clean, staff are friendly and it’s easy to park! So I wouldn’t say I was disappointed, just a little… meh! I’m sure there’s better sushi in Manchester, but it’s good for a quick meal. I wouldn’t take out-of-towners here.

I love the desert here, the sweet potato soup, mocha cheese cake, mocha latte and the chocolate banana pancake.

I entered Wasabi to find a packed room with a mono colored conveyor belt. That sublime, wonderful, divine white colored plate meant that the sushi it contained was one pound. ONEPOUND. At this price you obviously can’t expect the best sushi of your life but you know what, it was not bad. I’ve had much worse in certain branches of yo sushi, and for a lot more money. For this particular lunch deal, you won’t find anything high profile such as sashimi or hand rolls, but I had some lovely california rolls, along with spicy salmon nigiri, edamame and avocado maki. Total bill came up to 7 pounds, and I had a feast. Good to know though, they only accept credit cards for a minimum of 8 pounds, or you need to pay an extra 50 p. My belly made the maths before my head did: «I either pay 7,50 pounds, or I can get an extra plate and bring the bill to 8 pounds and problem solved…» Nom nom nom. I didn’t have time(or space left) to try their desert upstairs but I would go back just for a taste of their green tea waffles.

This place is a cute dessert spot in city centre. If you’re craving for some Asian sweetness after dinner and not planning to go bankrupt than this is a good place to go. There’s many types of dessert to choose from and if your the adventurous type with limited funds than this is the spot! I ordered the mango shaved ice and multiple types of Mochi ice cream. I wasn’t impress with the Mochi ice cream(green tea, red bean, some Japanese type) cause the Mochi was really thin(I like mine thicker) and the ice cream was hard as a rock. I’d say avoid the Mochi here and buy a box at the store. The mango shaved ice however was AMAZINg! For under £5 you get a legit mango shave ice full of flavour of mango with cut up fresh mangoes that were equally sweet! They also included this tapioca ball that burst in your mouth when you bite into it. I can’t stop thinking about their shaved ice and want to try the other types they serve!

I’ve had food from Wasabi a couple of times — the first time takeaway noodles from the Printworks branch, which were good enough that I ordered more noodles when I visited the branch near Oxford Road, which were some of the worst food I’ve ever had in a restaurant. This was my first time in the Chinatown branch and I regret not having ever come here when I worked nearby. I decided to only have sushi given the bad noodles experience. The sushi of course is not top drawer but it seemed fresh and the salmon nigiri and sashimi were both a decent quality — better than I’ve had a Yo Sushi for example. The rolls were ok, more of a filler really than anything with particular flavour. Service was a little haphazard, they forgot my friend’s chicken gyoza but when we reminded them it was obviously the next thing cooked because it came out straight away(actually I also tried some and was pretty good). The prices are what really make Wasabi worthwhile, the lunchtime deal of £1 per plate means you can get a substantial lunch sub £5 and also you wouldn’t feel uncomfortable sitting alone and can get in and out quickly, which is ideal really for an office worker. Incidentally, if you’re at the other end of town for lunch, Umezushi has an excellent lunch deal for their excellent quality sushi and sashimi.

Following a boozy day in Manchester we decided to pop to Wasabi in China Town for some quick sushi for dinner. For a Saturday evening it was rather busy, so we waited around 15 minutes for two seats at the belt. Once seated we opted for the set menus — I ordered set menu B at £8.95 giving me 3 grey plates of sushi off the belt and 1 hot noodle or rice dish cooked from the kitchen. Neil C. ordered the Wasabi set menu at £17.95 with 10 grey plates off the belt and 1 hot noodle or rice dish. He didn’t eat them all, don’t worry, we split the 13 plates between us and it was plenty for the 2 of us as well as a main meal each. The service in here is great. Anything you don’t see on the belt you can order fresh from the kitchen at no extra cost. For a quick lunch or dinner to satisfy a sushi crave, I would always recommend wasabi.

Wasabi is one of the few places I feel comfortable when I’m eating alone, and it’s also really good value. I usually get the meal deal of a selected rice or noodle dish and three plates of sushi from the belt, for £8.95 it’s hard to beat. The sushi might not be the best in Manchester, but they have mackerel and eel on the belt so they’re already one up on Yo Sushi. The hand rolls here are very good, with a nice selection of fillings — I love the grilled eel. My yaki soba was delicious, lots of big king prawns and dark meat chicken, the super fine carrot strands added a nice texture and lightened the rich noodle sauce. I had green tea to drink, and the staff are good at coming round to top up your tea too. Another little thing about Wasabi that I really like are the chopsticks, they’re not the horrible disposable bamboo kind, but the tapered plastic kind. Much more comfortable and easier to use in my opinion. I also like the little ceramic soy dish that doubles as a chopstick rest. Wasabi does great takeout too if you’re in a rush, though I would recommend ordering in advance via their website or by phone as some dishes take a while to prepare.

I’ve been here twice lately and that’s saying a lot because I hardy ever visit the same place twice in such a short space of time. First I went for an evening meal and enjoyed Set Menu B, which includes three plates of sushi and a main meal, all for less than £9! Secondly I went for weekend lunch at the bargain price of £5.50 for a bowl of miso soup and three plates of sushi. The setup is very similar to Yo Sushi with the sushi coming around on the conveyor belt and there being different coloured plates at different prices. There’s a list of the dishes so you know what you’re picking and the dishes tend to come round in the order they’re listed to make life even easier. Cheaper and way better than Yo Sushi!

The food is bland and sometimes stale. It is quite cheap– but there are other places reasonably priced that taste better.

All I can say is… best katsu curry ever. Hands down. They have a good selection of sushi at very reasonable prices. I have yet to try their ramen and other rice dishes, but so far the katsu curry is still my favorite. This place is worth visiting in Manchester.

No, this is not an authentic japanese restaurant but yes it is damn cool place: not huge, but there is a great choice. There is a conveyer belt that brings you all the sushis /makis that you can dream of when you are hungry and that you want to eat quickly! It is in the centre of china Town. You can pick 6 plates for something like 8 pounds: it is quite a good value: p

Not the greatest sushi but cheap, cheerful and convenient. I would recommend a set menu — we opted for £8.95 for 6 plates from the belt and a miso soup. This was a satisfying amount of food and all the plates I had were pretty good, with the exception of the mackerel which I didn’t really rate. I would have preferred it if there were a few more vegetable dishes on the belt, and the portions of edamame were quite small. Overall this place was great for a cheap eat and a good option for when I’m too skint to go somewhere nicer.

My introduction to sushi was in Vancouver where i’d eat it daily for lunch at work because over there it is not only cheap, but also very good. So on returning to Manchester it was a shock to find the only sushi accessible seemed to be at around £8 per roll or more and an evening restaurant style. Quite steeply priced. With the arrival of Yo and Wasabi in Manchester, this made sushi more accessible to rookies and provided a more affordable option to those of us that wanted to make it a more regular dining occurrence. One of the great things about Wasabi are the meal deals where you can buy just off the belt sushi or combine it with another hot Japanese cuisine. My usual is meal B which is 3 dishes off the belt combined with a hot dish(pork teppenyaki with soba noodles for me) for a reasonable £8 ish. The katsu curry is also a winner. Everytime I visit I leave satisfied, happy to have got my hit in pleasant surroundings with friendly staff, but i also leave with a few small complaints. 1. the rolls are a bit loose 2. why can i see tuna mayo in a roll 3. why is there never any avocado maki on the belt. but if that’s all I’ve got to complain about, then it really does pass a lot of tests. I highly recommend going to wasabi as if you like sushi you will become a regular. wasabi is not the finest sushi, or the best sushi and often presents some strange combination of roll fillings, but I probably eat there more than any other sushi restaurant in Manchester simply because it gives me my hit of sushi for a reasonable price. keep up the good work Wasabi

I go to Wasabi when I need a sushi fix and cannot afford to go to Yo Sushi and often mix going to the China Town one or the Printworks. I normally go for the special deals and they more than fill me up. Staff at both places are oriental and I normally have to ask twice or ask them to repeat what they’ve just said. It is normally busy in the China Town one and the staff can be chatty and friendly if you are a regular as I am not, the reception is average to below average. What also draws me to this place is the dessert room upstairs but the staff here are average to shockingly bad(lack of smile or common sense) :(

I could sum up Wasabi with ‘Cheap and cheerful Japanese cuisine’. The small restaurant in Chinatown is a good place to grab a quick bite of serviceable and frugal Japanese food — you’re not getting serious sushi here, the rolls on offer aren’t the most technically accomplished(my wife can do better), but they taste nice enough and the selection on the conveyor is usually pretty good — the menu is extensive though so check that before committing to the belt. As well as sushi, you can get hot noodle and rice dishes and wasabi do a number of set meals which are great value. You can even get it delivered in the city centre, which makes it good for a spot of work lunch. in the Chinatown branch the upstairs is taken up with a bubble tea & dessert bar, which is a great idea. These are really popular in Vancouver, but I’ve only seen a couple in Manchester — it’s great use of the space and seems popular with the kids but I’ve not had a bubble tea there yet — if it’s anything like their food it’ll be good but not life changing, which is just what you want sometimes.

Well not the best sushi that you will every have, wasabi is one off the cheapist. Great when I’m broke and in need of a sushi fix — I can grab some plats and a main for under a tenner. I do find that this place is a great stepping stone into bigger and better sushi places, know I need to grab me a plane ticket.

This has to be the cheapest sushi places! My boyfriend originally hated fish and refused to go into a sushi bar… but wasabi caters for the beginners who are afraid of trying sushi.. You can get a cooked meal and three plates of the conveyer belt for less than a tenner to help break you in. Now my other half has ten plates of sushi and the staff are always so friendly and order you anything that’s not on the belt… There is less choice than yo sushi but its cheaper and tastier… my only quibble is that tuna is not always available :(

I feel the star rating should come with a disclaimer, this is my first foray into Sushi, which seems rather odd considering I’m literally into the last few days of my 20’s(sniff good bye youth you were… drunken and filled with unhealthy food) I’ve had ‘Sushi’ before though I’ve been told to utterly disregard it as it came from tescos which apparently makes it a little like your first love in your teens which you’re later told you were young you didn’t know what you were doing it was never love, sushi… wait my analogies are going down a garden path. SO! Wasabi, conveyor belt food I was dubious, but came away thinking actually this isn’t too bad. it’s basically a buffet where you don’t have to leave your seat, you eat as much as you want to eat and pay at the end. This could be lethal in my mind if you turn up with a hunger. So upon recommendation I went with the set menu so got a large main(prawns and udon noodles, very tasty) and then you get some plates from the conveyor, I didn’t really have any idea where to start and literally said to my mates ‘point at what shouldl go in my face and if you screw me I’ll get my revenge… one day’ and so off we went picking up random plates. It can get a little frustrating that when you’re deciding do I want to eat that, it’s then out of your reach and you have to wait for it to come round again, which feels like an age. Be aware that not everything on the menu comes on the conveyor, I’d say the conveyor has maybe 10(max 15) different types of dish coming round so if you’re there for any length of time you’ll suddenly find yourself looking at dishes going ‘I keep seeing you, I don’t want you and clearly no one else does because I keep seeing you’ Once I’d gone through my 3 plates from my set menu, I decided to go adventorous I picked up an additional purple plate(they cost a smidgen more) to which I got nods of approval my two comrades. There’s utterly no problems taking extra plates if you’ve chosen the set menu you just pay for them as additionals, I like that, I like that alot it just means you can eat just as much as you want to eat especially with the sizes of the plates, basically that moment where you’re just like ‘I’m still a little hungry, but only a little’ will be a thing of the past in Wasabi. As a first experience of none supermarket sushi, it definitely made me feel like I want to go again, though it also makes me want to try other Sushi places to see if this is a good standard and whether my 4 stars are well given

I am not the biggest fan of conveyor belts or for that matter super crowded restaurants but the delicious food in Wasabi makes up for everything! When I think of sushi i cant really think beyond Wasabi because you can never go wrong with their deals. My favorite deal is the 8.50 one, where you get 3 plates of Sushi along with any main dish(Fills me up every time). They have a wide range of Sushi, prawns, salmon, eel, chicken, vegetarian and many more. Definitely try their miso soup and Laksa curry, because they are absolutely delicious! I would say its best to avoid peak times like evening 5 – 7 or weekend lunch times because then you wont have a good experience and might just get pissed off. I would recommend going there for a late night dinner when its quiet and you don’t have to wait for an hour to be seated and then compete with the others to snatch your favorite plate from the belt. Verdict: Great food, value for money but not the best place to sit and dine! If you are a foodie like me you might become a regular here!
