Several of my friends on Qype are vegetarians. Nothing wrong with that. But if you, re a veggie, look away now! Jesse Smith is a family butcher which prides itself on traditional values. They have grown to have 5 outlets based on the Cotswolds: Tetbury, Cirencester, Burford, Northleach and this one in Marlborough. Every town ought to have a butchers like this one. They say their aim is to excel in traditionally reared meat, supporting an environmental and friendly way of farming that prioritises animal welfare. They buy meat from farmers who won’t use growth hormones and avoid chemicals. For example, they buy their pork from Plantation Pigs of Shackleford, Surrey, who say: our pigs live outside in fields. bathe in mud, and in winter they have plenty of dry straw to keep warm and healthy: superior meat from pigs with superior lifestyles. They also produce their own pies and sausages, both of which are consistent award-winning products. The young butchers behind the counter at Smith’s are courteous and very knowledgeable. They will pass the time of day chatting to you about their meat. They know its provenance, and how long it’s been hung. They can suggest how you cook it. I’ve never had a bad buy from Smith’s and always drop in when driving through Marlborough. I strongly recommend it. It is just like stepping back in time.
