These guys are always super nice and very helpful. If they don’t have something, they will order it, even if they sometimes forget to call ya when it arrives;).
It’s a bit on the pricey side, but the quality and selection have always been nice.

Healthy Pet is a great pet store with an amazing selection of high quality dog foods. The employees are educated about the products they are selling and always very helpful. I find it much easier to navigate than the large chain pet stores.

I went to make a return today on a $ 90 package of unopened food. I NEVER make returns. Never. Why did I need to make the return this one time? Because I recently lost my beloved dog and best friend to cancer after several months of chemotherapy. And the unopened food was a daily and painful reminder that my boy was no longer here. So I brave the return today. The sales associate kindly referred me to the manager because the return policy is that they never issue cash refunds. The manager suggested that I call the owner since he didn’t have the authority to oblige my request. «Sure, no problem. I just needed to explain my situation; there shouldn’t be an issue,» is what I was naively thinking. You know where this is going.
After first establishing that I was a regular and loyal customer of the store, some unexpected emotion took over as I earnestly explained why I needed to make the return. I found myself more choked up when having to express the fact that a store credit would not necessarily be of any use to me since I no longer have a need for pet products. It was difficult stomaching my new reality since soooo much of my time and energy during my boy’s lifetime was devoted to researching and finding only the best products for him.
The owner, Darren, couldn’t at all see past the fact that this was a policy, and he can’t change the policy, because it’s always been a policy. I’m thinking reasonably, «But it’s…his policy… and he owns the store… and hence, could override his own policy… given the circumstances?
You’ve waited for it; it’s the best part. This is where he says, «Maybe in your world, it’s okay to break the rules, but as for me, I’m a rules follower…»
Yes, he did. He yammered on about how I didn’t have to agree with him; it’s just the way that it is, yada yada.
All this because I wanted a refund on unopened dog food, and not store credit, because I no longer have a dog. When I underscored this fact, he maintained that the store credit never expires in case I were to get another dog.
Had no… emotional…energy…to argue with inflexibility, and the fact that my shattered heart can’t fathom ANOTHER DOG, for heaven’s sake. Just never you mind, fella.
You must have missed the class on:
* customer service
* showing appreciation for customer loyalty
* being able to see the bigger picture
Here’s the bigger picture: You missed an easy opportunity to handle it with grace and some class, because you needed to be «right»…all over $ 90. You give small businesses a bad name.

I buy live mice for my ball python here. They cost $ 1.36 each (tax included). The best price I could find in the area. They sell pinkies to adults, all the same price. Nice staff, zippy service. One time, I walked in a minute after they closed and they opened up for me again. Very nice of them! They even didn’t ask for tax on my meat mice that same visit. I love Healthy Pet!

Only gave it one star because Unilocal requires a minimum of one star. This store is filthy, the mice and rats they sell are kept in deplorable conditions and management doesn’t care. Some time back I observed a staff member tossing mice by their tails into their cages causing the mice to hit the back of the cage with a hard thump and fall to the floor of the cage. Complaints to the on site manager and the owner, Darren, who works in the Thousand Oaks store were met with denials of what I had just seen with my own eyes. I lodged a complaint with Agoura Animal Control at that time.
I returned today to find the rats and mice in cages which were filthy and full of feces. They had been provided open water bowls (rodents should have water bottles not bowls) which were full of litter and yet more feces making the water undrinkable. The condition of the bowls made clear they had not been cleaned nor had the animals been provided fresh water in some time. A complaint to the store employee again went unneeded. His response was to claim he had just cleaned the bowls the day before, an obvious lie and irrelevant given the animals had no fresh water from which to drink today. He was clearly unconcerned and very defensive.
I made another complaint to Animal Control and placed another call to Darren which has not yet been returned. Send this business a message that animal abuse and neglect is not okay. See for yourself what is going on there and make all appropriates complaints to force Healthy Pet to stop this now!
Follow up on July 3:
I left a detailed message for owner Darren on July 2 advising I had serious concerns about the condition in which the rats and mice were being kept at his Agoura store and asking him to call me to discuss. Still no return call. It’s distressing that a pet store owner does not demonstrate appropriate concern and care for the animals under his charge and obviously is not properly supervising the staff at his Agoura store. Wouldn’t a better business practice be to investigate the complaint and correct the problem rather than to ignore customer concerns and deny the problems exist?

HEALTHY PET IS AMAZING
I have read all these negative reviews today and its all down right wrong. I have 4 snakes I have been feeding them mice from this store for years, I also have 2 dogs I have feed all different cans dried and frozen raw food from here and never once had a problem, the workers are great smart and very helpful. there isnt a store I rather shop at for my pets.
the store is always clean my snakes and dogs have never been sick.
I love healthy pet darren is a hard worker who owns 3 stores and cares for every animal he helps. they stores are NEVER DIRTY they staff is ALWAYS NICE.
UPDATE: Jeff N is my younger brother and he has worked there for a total of 2 months i have been a customer for 4 years. i was not asked to post, my brother just told me about a rough day he had and some comments made it to Unilocal.so after reading such HARSH and UNTRUE posts about the store on this site i took it apon MYSELF and had to back a company who i have been shopping for many year before my brother started working there.
all my animals have been well taken care of by healthy pet from snakes to dogs they get the right food at the right price. they have never been sick or needed to go to a vet, and i thank this all to healthy pet.
i was not asked to post about healthy pet by my brother. just a happy customer who knows the truth about this store. and just so happens my brother works there. i never thought to write on Unilocal i have never used it before but i had to make one after reading this comments.
if you want a healthy and happy pet, then go to healthy pet where they always take care of you.

I bought food from these guys and they had such an attitude. They are overpriced and dont ever try to cut you a break. I will never shop here again. I dont need to be talked down too.

I had just enjoyed a nice lunch at Agoura Deli with my friend and since I was in the area I went into Healthy Pet to pick-​up a small antler for my small dog. The associate told me that they were out of small ones so they pointed me to a basket of large antlers merchandised with bones, and rawhide chews. I selected the smallest of the bunch and took it to the register. They took my credit card and rung me up. When I got out side of the shop, my friend asked about my purchase and I shared I had purchased an antler for $ 29.99. She (being a dog owner for many years) was shocked and told me I had been «ripped off». I headed back into the shop to share my concern. I was told there were no returns! I asked if the sale from 5 minutes earlier could be voided. She picked up the phone and called the owner (in-​front of me) and had the dialogue over the phone about me and my unhappiness almost as if I were invisible. The sales associate hung up the phone and said no, sorry. I was so disappointed, especially after expressing my concern about the price, my reason for walking back into the shop, not understanding why they couldn’t void the transaction…
As I started to leave, the sales associate shouted out to me, as if to salvage the situation, that there were small antlers tucked behind brochures on the countertop. Are you kidding me, why wasn’t I shown those when I asked for small ones? She said, «you were so confident in your purchase I didn’t think I needed to show you those». Huh? Really?
I warn others about aloof sales staff and an owner that can’t see the forrest through the trees.

I’ve been going to Healthy Pet for over 3 years and Darren, the owner, is very knowledgeable with all products. I have 2 dogs that shed a lot so Daren suggested I buy ther Furminator and Salmon Oil to put in their food! WOW!!! What a difference that has made. Not only are my dogs not shedding as they did, their coats are nice and shiny. They have never looked better! THANK YOU HEALTHY PET!

I have been doing business with Healthy Pet for about 3 years and I just couldn’t be happier. They have helped me with every step in securing the right food for my diabetic dog, which is not an easy task. They have been patient and caring throughout the entire process. The owner of the store has taken an active interest in my dog’s life and I know if there are any future problems, they will be there for us. Thank you for being there!
