Shiro’s Saimin Haven

We always make a trip to eat here when we are on the rock. Too many side dishes to choose from and all are delicious.

Lots of traffic in this area but the food is so good! Don’t forget to get your HART booklet with all different types of coupons for the Waipahu, waimalu and Aiea area! Used the coupon for shiros… Receive a small saimin for $ 1.95!

Shiros had so many saimin options on their menu!
I ordered the wonton saimin which came with crispy wonton as well as a ton of cabbage. We always come here after visiting out relatives in aiea. Normally the restaurant is packed with people but this visit was much less crowded — the waitress said this was due to the construction of the monorail.
The crispy wontons weren’t as good as the wontons that came in my saimin.

Most of the food that I’ve tried were pretty good. Very few of them I didn’t care for but I still like coming here for the comfort food and affordable prices

It’s been years since I’ve been to Shiro’s. In fact the last time I went was at their Kalihi location.
I’m so glad that the quality if food is the same. The #58 Dodonpa brought back awesome memories. So onolicious I couldn’t believe it. We also had the chicken cutlet with gravy. The chicken was very very very tender and perfectly cooked. You could tell that the gravy was made and didn’t come from a jar.
Everyone that greeted us that day was so pleasant.
I’m sorry it took new so long to return. It’ll never happen again.

Ahhh i am home! Straight off the plane and to shiros i go.
Old school local kindness… simple well executed food. Everyone here is soo friendly, kind and genuine. What a change from LA. That’s why you live hawaii right?
And no folks its just rumors that they are «closing».
No need for trendy music, fancy lights… Just good local moke comfort food. The menu is ginormous.
Kept it simple… Had the #1 saimin with won bok and all other yummy stuff that comes with it.
–added the chinese mustard+aloha shoyu for side dippage
Got the side beef yakitori (my 4 yr old wacked it before i could get a few more bites in)
Side of crispy pork and the shoyu vinegar special dip sauce… Helooooo. I did not share one bite of this with anyone. This was amazeballs. So simple yet it mets in your mouth… The fat just melts and the outside perfectly crispy in all the right spots! Home run.
Tourists… Venture out of waikiki and come eat some hawaiian ramen and side dishes… You will see what the real hawaii is all about… The aloha sprit! By the way debit or cash only…
The shopping center is also great old school… Ck out the baldwin sweet shop a few stores down… Great local snacks and ice shave!

Great saimin here! Largest number of combinations I’ve seen. Polite and courteous staff.
I ordered the won ton saimin and it was great! The dash (soup base) was seasoned perfectly.
A great place to grab some local eats before catching a flight. It’s only 10 mins away from HNL airport.

It’s not busy at all at this time. Even if it were to get busy, I don’t think the wait would be too long. The restaurant is huge!
Food:
MOCHIKO CHICKEN — It was good but nothing too special. It came with a side of corn, which wasn’t good to me. It could use more flavor.
LOCO MOCO — My boyfriend wanted to substitute the white rice with fried rice but they were out. Our server said the fried rice is super popular in the mornings so they tend to run out. Which is totally fine, not a big deal at all. I had a bite of it and oh my, the gravy was delicious!
FRIED NOODLES W/​CHARSIU — Super delicious! I loved how the Charsiu tasted. Nice and soft!
I wish I got to try their saimin since that’s what they specialize in, but next time :)
Service: Our server was super friendly. My cup of water never went empty.
They don’t take credit cards, checks. And if you want to pay with a debit card, there’s a fee of 79 cents. If you care about 79 cents, I suggest you bring cash. Haha.
Overall, my experience here was great! I’d be great if they had a Shiro’s in town! I’ll definitely be back if I’m in the area :)

OK… Place was empty upon our arrival… The vegetables had spots all over (looked like mold)… We had to pluck all of it out of 2 of our bowls… We ate in awkward silence as there was no music playing… Not to mention an oriental man standing by the cash register just standing there staring at what little customers had trickled in. Uncomfortable and awkward was our visit and frankly, the food wasn’t all that great. Mediocre. Would probably not return and would find another saimin joint to hit up instead. See photo that I’m posting for the spotty veggies.

The place that rarely ever changes.
I grew up eating here. When I was a kid, I knew that whenever we were good we would come here. The atmosphere hasn’t changed, the only thing that has are how the little sayings on the walls look.
The menu is rife with old favourites and a few select specials that have migrated themselves over. I myself enjoy bringing friends here that have never tried it.
Take out here is really good and I actually prefer ordering for take out instead of dining in as the noodles come separately and don’t get mushy while you’re waiting for your soup to cool down.
Overall, I suggest taking out as opposed to eating in. Though reading the walls does have its charm, it can become awkward at times with no music playing.

Came here yesterday afternoon to pick up our take out order around noon. Very disappointing. I ordered a mochiko chicken with fried noodle plate with a side order of mochiko chicken.
The side order of mochiko looked like a half eaten mini. Only 4 pieces of chicken. Didn’t get a chance to take a picture because my kids started eating it as soon as I opened it. Then I opened my plate and there was even less chicken. The food was good but the portions suck. If they added the side order portion to the plate, then it would be a decent size. But for $ 9 a plate, $ 5 for a side order and feeling less than satisfied… it’s not worth it to me.
Don’t go there hungry and expect to leave satisfied with the take out plate portion they give you. Not sure if they’re more generous if you dine in. Maybe, we’ll try again sometime because the food was good.

My dad was making fried noodles one day and after I saw that I just had a craving for Shiro’s. So we went there for dinner Friday night.
It’s always a nice homey place to go to eat dinner. Prices are very reasonable. I think we ordered four things off the menu and it was less than $ 30.
My favorite dish at Shiro’s is the fried noodles. Everything about it is good, the toppings, the seasonings, and the noodles. My husband got #11 which is the hot and spicy saimin. We usually get the French fries. But this time we got the fries and onion rings. If you haven’t tried their onion rings, you gotta try it. It’s probably one of the best ones I’ve ever had. It has the right amount of crispness and not oily on the outside. It’s always a good meal at Shiro’s.
Also when you look around at the décor of the place, you can tell that they really care about the children in the community. Their drawings are up and it is a nice touch.
I run a media club at my school and we thought it would be a good idea to try to interview businesses. We chose Shiro’s and the owner was very receptive and willing to be interviewed by my sixth graders. Not a lot of businesses responded or followed through with our request, but Shiro’s really came through for our students. They were able to create their video with some of the footage.
Shiro’s is a great place to eat and great restaurant who supports the community. Double thumbs up to them!

Breakfast is on! (See pics). I really had no idea they served breakfast here. Apparently no one else knows either has there are only about 10 customers here right now.
My findings:
1. Service: awesome. Super attentive. Water stays filled, frequent check ups to see if I need ketchup or anything else.
2.food: great. No ordered the loco moco and extra crispy hash browns. Hash browns came out perfect. The loco moco is tasty but I’m not sure what the deal is with all the extra gravy. Almost like a loco moco soup. Still tasty though!

This is my go to ramen place. I’ve had Zippy’s, I’ve tried Agu Ramen, and I love Goma Tei. But I come to Shiro’s the most because it’s no-​mess-​around-​saimin action. From the minute you walk in, the business is saimin. The servers are quick to turnover tables, yet take the time to give their suggestions. They’re patient if you need them to be but quick if you know what you’re doing. Exactly what I love when it comes to service. They’re like tiny, Filipino saimin angel ninjas!
I’ve had so many that I can’t list them all but most meats are better IN the saimin than to eat it on the side. I don’t mind the crunchy, tough, texture because it’s my fault for not putting it in the saimin to begin with. I LOVE that you can get your noodles undercooked. I never liked my noodles really soft so I always get them half cooked and at Shiro’s I know I can do it without getting the «worried because of the raw egg in the dough» look. It’s like steak, people… don’t get it well done, it’s just a waste of good product!
My go to saimin, no matter what mood I’m in, is the chicken katsu with a side order kim chee and NO vegetables. Because once you throw the kim chee in the saimin, you’ll have more than enough bok choi in there… and with the perfect amount of heat. I also love that they keep the place cold because I’d just want to punch someone in the face if I had to eat saimin in a warm environment!
For the price, Shiro’s is number one… so please don’t raise prices. or I’d be going to Goma Tei (Goma Tei is my Hy’s Steakhouse of ramen… only when I’m able to splurge). It’s definitely better than Agu… in fact, we ate at Shiro the day AFTER eating at Agu. After admitting that and writing this about Shiro’s, I’m also obligated to confess that I’m not even a soup person. So that says mountains about giving Shiro’s the highest rating.

My friend recommending this place for me to try their saimin… honestly i don’t know what saimin really is, but the waitress is very helpful and recommend their most popular — «the ultimate bowl» to let us try, and we also ordered crispy pork also… we loved it… it come with a giant bowl and with all the delicious meat, and fish cake… Saimin is not as salty as ramen… and is more chewy then udon… it’s delicious… and we finished everything — including the broth…
They located closed to the airport in a small strip mall… so if you just land or try to find something to enjoy as your last meal in Hawaii… you should try them… :)

Every time I’m back in Hawaii I do my best to make a stop at Shiro’s. Parking can be tough if you visit at the wrong time (the shopping center is nearly all eating places) but there are plenty of tables. Once you get inside the saimin is delicious, the price is great, and there are plenty of options for sides.
You can’t really go wrong with the sides — everything I’ve tried has been great. Note that many of the sides are deep-​fried, which is mentioned in the Sides section, but not in the list of saimin combinations. So don’t order the «Mahi Mahi Saimin» thinking you’re getting a really health dish (you will, however, get a delicious dish). In any case, some of my favorites are the beef stew, («one good-​sized») lau lau, and the previously mentioned mahi mahi.

Grew up eating Shiro’s Saimin and even still till this day I crave for a nice hot bowl of Shiro’s Saimin from time to time. If you’re not feeling saimin, you could always get something else like a burger, oxtail soup, or mochiko chicken. Other than saimin (there’s so many combos to choose from), another favorite of mine was the fried shrimp and teri beef combo. Not too sure when they’ve changed the type of shrimp they used, but the shrimp they used before was much better in my opinion. In addition to saimin, I also like to get a side order of fries covered with teri sauce.
I get a nostalgic feeling whenever I eat here. I appreciate how they kept the same décor over these many years. I still, in fact, enjoy reading those ‘life lessons’ all along their walls.

DEKA BOKO LOCO MOCO.
Say that 5 times fast. My boyfriend did. I had the super tasty fried rice omelet which was more rice than omelet, the way I like it. We dream of the deka boko loco moco, and not just cause it’s fun to say. It was huge and tasty to the last bite. This was one of our favorite places, but make good choices cause their menu is extensive. The lady serving us was super sweet too. Seemed like there were a lot of regulars here.

Probably one of the better local Saimin places in Hawaii. They use local and fresh ingredients for all of their dishes. I was so overwhelmed with the menu because they had such a variety of food choices, over half of them being Saimin combos! I ordered the ‘Salute to Salud’ Saimin. It came with three different types of fish cake, wun tun, and a variety of vegetables. I ordered the regular portion but I probably would have been able to eat all of it with the smaller portion.
This place had more seating than i had expected. Friendly staff and yummy local food you don’t wanna miss.

Saimin = good old local comfort food at its finest. Shiro’s has SO many types to choose from, you’ll be in saimin heaven!
Super reasonable pricing and the food comes out quick. The broth is tasty and you can choose how you want your noodles cooked. I prefer mine harder and hate when they are fat and soggy.
They have some other items on the menu like burgers, simple sandwiches, and some plate lunches. Pass on the tuna melt, you can make a better one yourself at home. But they have crinkle fries that are crispy and go good with the saimin.
I really liked the wun tons that came in my soup. I got the Vienna saimin, and it was super simple yet totally hit the spot on a windy night.
Highly recommend for low key dining when you are in the Aiea/​Pearl City area.
