Dr. Michael J. Velsmid, DPT, MS V.

Business Owner

Dr. Velsmid graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minors in Nutrition and Chemistry. After working for a short time as a chemist he returned to the University of Massachusetts to complete a Masters Degree in Exercise Science. During that time, he trained and competed as a body builder. Dr. Velsmid went directly from the University of Massachusetts to Simmons College where he completed his Masters Degree in Physical Therapy with a full academic Veterans Affairs scholarship. He started his career as a physical therapist at the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plan, Massachusetts. Four years later he started his private practice in Boston. Since 1999, Dr. Velsmid and the staff at Boston Sports Medicine have successfully rehabilitated thousands of patients in their three offices surrounding Boston.

I met Jenny (Mohns) toward the start of my third trimester of pregnancy when all my joints started loosening and inflammation was causing me a lot of trouble walking. I was desperate and miserable and had already been driving across town shelling out $ for chiropractors and hadn’t started feeling any better. But, my trajectory changed for the better once I started working with Jenny in and out of the pool. My walking got MUCH better. She was very competent and confident that she could help me, and I have been so grateful to have her help during the final months of this pregnancy. She is a pleasure to work with, and I have already recommended her to my midwife for future referrals for women suffering from pregnancy-​related injuries or pain.

Michael and the staff at BSM have always been incredibly accommodating and more than professional throughout my multiple visits to this site. The front desk staff is attentive, polite, and thorough. The PT staff is VERY knowledgeable and extremely interested in you as a person and what you’re going through instead of just another patient.
I am an Ironman triathlete and sub-​3-​hour-​marathoner and as any endurance athlete have seen injury come and go (and go much quicker thanks to the help of BSM). Most importantly they never told me to stop running — through minor modifications and a steady dose of treatment I was able to continue my training without losing a step!
I would never trust my body to anyone else besides Boston Sports Medicine. For the best treatment in the city, look no further.

Dr. Erin Looney is a miracle worker! Actually she is extremely knowledgeable and skilled at her job. I went to BSM on the recommendation of 2 friends. Last summer I was ¾ of the way through training from my first Marathon and I suffered a serious calf strain. Erin nursed me back to health using a number of different methods. What I found most helpful, besides her physical therapy, was her emotional support. As a first time marathoner I was a headcase; her calm and confident approach was exactly what I needed. I crossed the finish line in Chicago and she was one of the first people I thought of. I didn’t have even a touch of pain in my calf over the 26.2 miles– everything else hurt but that didn’t stop the smile on my face.
I’m now at about the same time frame before the Boston Marathon. Thanks to the stretching techniques she taught me I have every intention of making it to the starting line injury free.

I visited Boston Sports Medicine for help recovering from hip surgery to repair a torn labrum. I selected this facility due to the excellent recommendation from my chiropractor and the fact that they have aquatic therapy. I was in desperate need of help. When I started, I was barely able to walk, rotate my leg left or right or stand for any prolonged period of time. To begin treatment, I was evaluated by Dr. Erin Looney. She was very thorough, kind, and understood my concerns and hesitations. Twice a week for several months, I underwent aquatic therapy and slowly but surely under Erin’s guidance, I regained more movement in my hip. What I found most comforting about being under her care was that she adjusted the treatment plan based on how my body was responding. She tailored each session to ensure I protected the joint as it was healing but also maintained steady progress to guarantee that my healing proceeded positively. Having been treated in a different therapy practice before my surgery, I can assure you that Erin is very knowledgable about the human body and body mechanics. Coupled with her pleasant personality you know you are in good hands. Don’t hesitate to see her if you are experiencing a physical limitation and in need of physical therapy. You won’t be disappointed.

This is the second time I’ve gone to Boston Sports Medicine for treatment. I recently had knee surgery to repair frequent dislocations. I am seeing Stacy for treatment and she is knowledgeable, caring and encouraging. After a complication with my recovery, I had to temporarily cancel our appointments and Stacy even checked in to make sure I was doing okay. When I returned to PT, she was very supportive and made sure my program addressed the surgery recovery but also considered my concerns due to the complication. She also has been flexible with changes to our scheduled apts because of other unexpected medical appointments. I enjoy going to my apts each week because she and the other staff are all very friendly and create a positive environment that really encourages recovery. I would definitely recommend Stacy and Boston Sports Medicine for anyone who is looking for physical therapy.

Boston Sports medicine is great. I have been to many PT offices over the years and these guys are the best. Very clean busy office, I originally saw them while pregnant with my second and having major back issues (2 flared herniated discs), saw them again during my third pregnancy and did the water therapy, they have 2 salt water pools and the treatment is great. I return from time to time with lower back or neck issues and after a few visits I am good to go.
My 2 cents: Whenever looking at reviews always scroll to the bottom and look at the filtered reviews as well. I don’t agree with Unilocal review filter– ALL reviews should be counted. In many cases if all reviews were considered 5 star companies would have a 2 star rating and vice versa. Decide for yourself Unilocalers, don’t let their «algorithm «do it for you!
