They are under new management and going through some upgrades and construction but every piece has made the gym a lot better and the construction is does not interfere with workout. The locker room is nice and access to an okay sauna and steam room but the place is very clean and updated. I get great workouts with little pockets of space to do circuit work with a wide variety of workout equipment. I enjoy the staff and overall really like the gym. I have never taken any classes but they do offer them. Check it out and get a great workout in!

Under new management. Name of club is now Uptown Athletic Club. Change is coming… apparently…again…

They dont pick up the phone … I’ve been calling every other day for a good two weeks. I paid for a month to try it out and they charged my card again.

For the traveling professional, A Groupon is a sweet way to not spend a bunch and be able to go to a gym without a year membership. This gym has all the weights you need and a lot of space to get your workout done. The bathroom/​shower area is top notch and the staff seem super nice. Great gym to try out!

This gym is weak.
Dirty towels, a joke for a locker room — don’t plan on anything working, poor poor customer service, broken equipment, overall sad experience. I feel like I am slumming by going here.

Great gym! I haven’t worked out in years and getting back is really hard.
But this gym is perfect it’s got a great location. Lots of parking.
I always go late 2 hrs before closing. so I’m not sure about other timings but it’s never busy. No meatheads just regular people.
Staff is friendly and the gym is always clean.
I love the view if the mountains while running. Tons of screens to keep me entertained. And so many treadmills and cardio machines that I cant imagine them being all occupied.
5 stars glad I joined.

$ 4,000 for 3 months at this gym wasted!
This is my second review of this gym, and this review is 100% opposite of what I wrote in the first week of my membership. This review is in no way to reflect upon the trainer I used, who was incredible.
I have been a member of the Captain Cook Athletic Club for a few years now and been very happy with the service and atmosphere. My favorite trainer wanted to switch to Powerhouse Gym because of the expansive amount of equipment available to train on. Sounded like a great idea… EXCEPT
The training went from $ 45 per session (at the Cook) to $ 95 for the exact same trainer as I had at the Captain Cook… That is more than double my normal bill for monthly fitness. A total of 900 per month (including «free» monthly membership)
You would think that for what basically amounts to a monthly mortgage, I would have received at least a standard Walmart level of customer service. No…
The training was fantastic, but do keep in mind I had fantastic training with the exact same trainer for half the cost at The Captain Cook.
My complaints are with the uninformed lazy counter girls, the accounting Department (that’s a joke) and the lying owner Keith.
These girls may be cute, but are nowhere even close to being qualified for more than just sitting there and being pretty. I can just imagine the job description:
Job Offered: Powerhouse gym is looking for cute counter girls to ignore customers and spend all their time on their phone or flirting with as many cute guys as they can. Don’t worry, we will pay you a fare wage and expect nothing in return except your cute looks and blank expression when asked simple questions. Truly a golden opportunity for the entitled youth of Alaska!
How hard is it to run a credit card? When I hand you a card, swipe it like a normal business, don’t just write it down incorrectly to run it at a later date. That should have been my first clue to the shady, piss-​poor operation.
The Billing was a nightmare from the very first month. I spent just under $ 4,000 in 3 months with this gym. Yes, I know… The math does not add up. That is because they decided to keep running my card after I canceled my training and membership… More on that shady slick shit in a moment.
Nothing says thank you for your huge monthly investment like being asked in snotty tone for an ID to receive a towel. God forbid you ask for a water! Hey I get it, I’m spending almost a grand a month here… I might just steal that joke of a towel.
Finally– the reason I went out of my way to write this review. Keith the owner.
After expressing my irritation with the inconsistent billing dates and my hand written credit card numbers floating around for anyone to lose or steal, he claimed to want to keep my business and said they would do better. After continued issues with billing and service, I was calling it quits. No longer was I going to take part in the fleecing of my wallet. Keith regrettably canceled the account. Regrettable because, my account was basically equal to 26.6 average memberships. But wait… There’s More!!!
Now that I am back at the Captain Cook, Imagine my surprise when my credit card was hit with a $ 931 charge to guess who… Powerhouse Gym.
I called many times to get in touch with an accounting department or the owner/​manager Keith. After days of numerous calls, Keith finally answered the phone and promised a prompt return of the credit card charge to my account and apologized for his and his staffs actions. After a few days (still no refund) I started calling again.
Keith lied to me and said he would send a screen shot of the refund. Here it is 7 days later… No screen shot and no refund! A total of 11 days…
Will I get my refund? Will Powerhouse gym finally get their shit together? Tune in next week… Same WHACKED time, Same WHACKED channel.
UPDATE– After I made a 3 way call between my bank and Keith the owner, My refund was deposited the next business day.
Had things had been handles better from the start– they would not have lost my business which totaled $ 10,800 per year for personal training

This is a really good gym if you are a real lifter. I travel a lot and good gyms are hard to find but this one really measured up. They have a huge selection of machines and free weights. Most importantly they have space to do deadlifts, two bench presses, and above all the every important power rack. Parking is great and the entrance was very nice. I especially liked the fireplace. Locker rooms are clean and comfy and the scale worked unlike a lot of other gyms I visit. Most importantly the fitness area is excellent. the people working out are all very friendly and this gym had some serious lifters.
Once criticism I have is they only have one power rack. I was going to the gym around 2−4pm which is always the slow times so thankfully I never had to wait for for anything but with only one power rack if one person is using it you’re screwed. They should have at least two!
I still give this one five stars it enabled me to not skip a beat despite my travels.

I have been going to the gym for an easy 20 years, most of my adult life. I think I’ve seen it all. I like PowerHouse gym for a bunch of reason’s. Parking is good, well lit in the wintertime, you feel welcome when you walk into the spacious foyer and are greeted by the staff at the counter. Some gyms well… smell like sweat; Powerhouse is clean and tidy. There are many different things you can do from rowing, yoga, Crossfit and other classes, to elliptical training or treadmill exercise. Really, something for everyone and great people as well.

This is the cleanest gym I have ever been in. They keep it clean and neat (no weights all over the floor). The staff is very friendly. One person went outside and shut off the lights on my car while i was on the treadmill. It’s a great gym. TVs are well maintained. Channels for everyone. If you are traveling to Anchorage check it out

As an avid gym frequenter, I can honestly give Powerhouse the 5*
There are a few things that are really important to me and Powerhouse knocks them all out of the park.
Options — Classes of all sorts are offered throughout the day. Two in particular stand out for me.
~Zumba — Great class for all skill levels. Add a little cha-​cha to your workout.
~Crossfit — Extremely difficult class, not for the faint of heart! Although the instructor (Kevin Creeden) is harsh and hard on his clients, it’s for a reason. I like to get my money’s worth and Kevin has me push my limits constantly.
Crowd Control — Even during peak hours there are plenty of treadmills and ellipticals to go around.
Well managed — The gym is kept clean and all types of people frequent.
Powerhouse has earned my membership.

I’m in love with Powerhouse in the it isn’t a huge open sweat room. Cardio is upstairs with machines and free weights downstairs. Though I don’t go at «peak hours» I never have a problem with cleanliness or over crowding. In fact, often when I am there first thing in the morning, the floors and counters are still drying off from a pretty thorough scrub down. The front desk staff greets everyone that walks in the door and usually gets a «have a great day» in as I am leaving. Cheaper than the Alaska Club and not as scary as some of the others. Price wise? Exactly what I am willing to pay for what I get. Equipment is well taken care of, and should anything not be working (a tv, etc) on any given visit, it is always fixed by the time I come back (usually the next day).
I don’t like crowds and I don’t like places where people prance around looking at themselves in the mirror making noises when they work out… so Powerhouse rocks for me. My husband and I are huge fans.

My husband and I WERE members of Powerhouse Gym for years. He had been a member for over a decade, at least. We finally left a few months ago, Spring 2010. The gym sold to new owners maybe early 2009? And it really has gone down hill since. They started selling cheaper day time memberships. But with no one to police when the day time people would stay past their hours. They started «renting’ lockers to make extra money. Well my husband barely found a locker some days because we weren’t going to rent one. And the cleanliness of the place. Especially the ladies bathroom, went downhill. They hired a «cleaning lady» that I would see in there during prime hours, wiping down the lockers. But no one was really taking care of it on the regular, like the previous owner. It just got more and more disgusting. We’ve changed gyms and my husband couldn’t be happier. No equipment hogs at the new place, less crowded. Oh and the membership is cheaper. And the whole social scene vibe Powerhouse got a reputation for. I never really saw it. That is until we left. We should have left sooner.

I trained at Powerhouse for about a month before my wedding and it did wonders. I met with a personal trainer every weekday and went down almost 2 sizes in that month period (and yes, I still went out and splurged on beer, pizza, burgers, etc. much to his chagrin). The place is well laid out, there are plenty of machines without it feeling like a warehouse and the male to female ratio was not bad at all. And even though there were the huge body builders, they didn’t overpower the place so «normal» people like me felt weird. If you’re looking for a great gym that isn’t an excuse to find a date (ahem, Alaska Club), this is the place for you.
