Aikido, a form of Japanese Budo, is frequently translated as ‘the way of harmony.’ The Genyokan Dojo is the international headquarters dojo for the Aikido Yoshokai Association of North America. Instructors and students from across the country and around the world study here to deepen their understanding of Kushida-sensei’s Aikido. (Please visit our website for more information.)
Focusing primarily on throwing and pinning techniques, Aikido is a non-competitive art based on the philosophy and martial arts of the Japanese Samurai. Though it can be an effective form of self-defense, it is not a fighting martial art. One studies both sides of a technique in a cooperative way with a partner with the goal of creating a harmonious relationship.

History
Established in 1981.
Takashi Kushida was born in Japan in 1935. He began Aikido study under Gozo Shioda-sensei, an early student of Aikido’s founder. Within a year of training, he was chosen to become a full-time apprentice student and spent the next ten years living in the Yoshinkan Dojo in Tokyo. Following this period, Kushida was made Senior Assistant Instructor at the Yoshinkan. In 1973, Kushida-sensei traveled to the US to teach only a few months; the response to his teaching and the growing level of interest in Aikido convinced him to stay in the U.S. to teach. In 1991, Kushida-sensei established his own school, called «Aikido Yoshokai.» The Yoshokai school stresses the philosophical and scientific principles behind Aikido – in particular, Kushida-sensei’s emphasis on harmony and conflict resolution as the ultimate goal of Aikido practice.
The original Genyokan Dojo was located at 749 Airport Blvd. In the summer of 2009, the Genyokan was moved to its current location across the pond from Costco.
