Burnt Toast Inn

Went to this bed and breakfast as an impromptu New Years getaway. Sarah was a gracious and generous hostess! We stayed in the Attic Room, the bathroom with the heated floors were amazing. Breakfasts were delicious with extra loving touches. Great location within walking distance to downtown!

Stayed two nights with Sarah and found her bed and breakfast to be the best, and my fiancée heartily agreed. Sarah went way beyond the norm to ensure her inn was well stocked with anything we might need, but the cleanliness and attention to detail far surpassed anything we’ve encountered in other B&Bs. Breakfasts were very good, and the first day she cooked eggs to our individual preference.
Bottom line: If you’re planning to stay in Ann Arbor at a B&B, give this place serious consideration (it’s also close to shops and restaurants downtown).
We stayed in the master suite and were utterly delighted, and we hope to return and enjoy more of her exquisite (and sometimes quirky) taste in art.

A lovely B&B, very welcoming and Sarah was super accommodating of early morning work schedule. Comfortable eating dinner at dining room and plenty of relaxing areas. Master bedroom includes a large soaking tub and dual rain shower. Easy walk to downtown Ann Arbor. Parking provided. Would go back!

Escaping Chicago for Memorial Day weekend was the best decision we made for a sweet vacation in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Burnt Toast Inn is the perfect location with close access to Ann Arbor’s gems. Sarah was so welcoming and inviting. We stayed in the attic room and it was cozy, clean and relaxing. Breakfast was delicious and it was great to meet people visiting from all over the U.S. We highly recommend this B&B and looking forward to staying here again in the future. Thanks Sarah!

no no no! Not sure why everyone loved this place. The décor was totally mish mash (country, earthy, indian prints, stuffed animals and kitsch that don’t mesh) but the real issue was the customer service or lack thereof. Owner’s son in law greeted us, showed us around.
Issue 1) Owner’s son in law told us to help ourselves to the alcohol but then finished by saying «well-don’t take too much.»
Issue 2) Owner’s son in law asked what time we wanted breakfast. We said is 9am ok as we are on West Coast time and could not imagine eating earlier than 6am our bodies’ times. He said ok but in the next breath mentioned that there were some really good brunch recommendations he could make. (made us feel as if he did not want us to eat there. Cost of lodging was not cheap and I feel they should have gone out of their way to feed us somehow (even saying «we will leave out a plate of muffins or whatever…)
Issue 3) I arrived back after dinner and wanted a nightcap. I was trying like hell to get the liquor cabinet opened and meanwhile a man (owner’s husband?) sat there nearby not offering help. What???
Issue 4) When asked the next day if we wanted breakfast (not what time do you want breakfast but do you want it) I mentioned that we hoped to eat a bit later but it seemed as if the owner’s son in law was discouraging that practice. His wife (owner’s daughter) said «oh that is because he knew I had to get somewhere at 9am» Don’t say it is ok to serve us breakfast at 9am and then be irritated about it. Please.
Issue 5) When asked by owner what time we would be heading home I said we would probably sleep in due to time difference and could we have an extra half hour if needed. She said «well the cleaners want to get in and get out as they are going to a Piston’s game.» what???
Issue 5) Our bathroom shower drain was full of hair upon arrival.. Isn’t that part of cleaning a shower? YUK
I am not easily bothered but the sum of these things felt like these folks really did not want to feed us, nor did they want us to have a glass of wine, nor did they want to accommodate us in any way.
So I don’t recommend this place and I would never ever return.

Sarah hosted my partner’s grandparents and I was invited to the Burnt Toast Inn for breakfast with them. We had the most delicious french toast (of course) and fresh fruit.
The interior is warm and charming. The living room has adorable antiques and everything is arranged in a tasteful and eclectic way. Each room is themed in some way, all with their own enormous personalities. My favorite part of the house is the garden, which flows with the zen vibe of the entire house.
Prime location… and adorable dogs! Wifi available throughout.

What a warm, welcoming, comfortable place to stay. Sarah makes you feel completely at home, her breakfasts are delicious and her coffee rocks! Great room, comfortable bed (and I am a good mattress junkie), well equipped bath and great shower pressure with abundant hot water. Great location for visiting U Mich.

When I was headed out the door, Sarah asked me to let her know if I thought of anything she could do to make the Inn better, but honestly, I couldn’t think of anything! The locations is wonderful… only 3 blocks from Main Street and close to everything. The rooms are comfortable, well decorated, perfectly clean, and really make you feel at home. The bed in the Master room was very comfortable and I had a much better night sleep than typical when I’m not at home. There is a Keureg machine in the hallway just outside of the rooms with a selection of coffee, in addition to granola bars and a few other items. I stayed in the Master room, which has it’s own bathroom with two sinks, a huge tub, and a shower with two shower heads, a large (and high) bed, a pretty big walk in closet, and plenty of room.
Sarah (the owner) is wonderful to deal with, accommodating, and couldn’t be more friendly. Breakfast in the morning definitely exceeded expectations and for just my girlfriend and me, included fresh baked breads with real peanut butter, blackberry and strawberry preserves, some of the best mozzarella and tomato I’ve had, grilled salmon, grapefruit, fresh made real oatmeal, tons of fruit, eggs, bacon, fresh squeezed orange juice, and her own branded coffee… all of it was delicious. You really feel at home when you stay here, far from the feeling of being at a hotel.
If you’re allergic to dogs, however, this is not the place for you. Sarah does have two dogs, Bo and Buddy (one of which is large, the other is more of a pony than a dog), who are well behaved and spend most of their time in the Inn, either lying on the couch or the floor (if you want the couch). Both dogs are very friendly and love attention and for us, added to the stay.
When I go back to Ann Arbor, I’ll definitely be checking back in for a place to stay!

Sarah is a very nice host. I stayed in the Green room which was very comfortable. It probably has the best location of all the B&Bs currently in Ann Arbor with respect to downtown, and it’s also an easy walk to campus (about 10 – 15 minutes to the Diag).

Did you ever wish you could live away from home for a week and feel completely at home? Sarah, the proprietor at the Burnt Toast Inn, can make you feel at home in her fabulously decorated establishment.
This is a lovely home, from the soft leather sofas in the living room, to the huge «cook’s dream» kitchen, to the comfortable bedrooms. Breakfast features homemade granola, an assortment of fresh fruit cut for easy serving, dark tasty fresh ground coffee, an imaginative assortment of breads, and hot and delicious fresh-​cooked meals.
Miss your dogs when you travel? The Burnt Toast has two dogs ready to give you a «dog fix» away from home. Bojangles, the Mastiff, is sweet and quiet. Buddy, the St. Bernard may be the biggest canine you’ve ever set eyes on. He’s 210 pounds of tail wagging friendliness. A dry-​mouthed St. Bernard, who will give you a doggy kiss you won’t forget.
The location of the inn is perfect. Downtown Ann Arbor is a short walk away and so is the University of Michigan main campus. We enjoyed our week at the Burnt Toast so much that we’ll definitely be back.

This is our home away from home in Ann Arbor. We would not consider staying any where else. The casual delicious breakfast promotes great conversation. Inn keeper is very helpful. We visit every year at art fair time and always enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the inn.

The Burnt Toast Inn is a lovely place to stay, especially if you’re visiting University of Michigan. It’s close to downtown Ann Arbor’s shops and restaurants and walking distance to the University, but it’s at the quiet end of town. No noise issues at all, even with the room fronting the street.
Sarah, the host, was warm and welcoming without being solicitous. The inn was spotlessly clean and charming in its décor. My room, though small (with an associated smaller cost) was comfortable and despite my concerns about the shared bathroom (with one other room), there was never an inconvenience. The large bathroom was spotlessly clean and aesthetically pleasing. Clean even to my very picky standards.
Sarah was extremely accommodating when I mentioned I had to depart early in the morning before breakfast was served. She made sure there was delicious granola, fresh fruit, soy milk (for the lactose intolerant amongst us), and coffee available for me to help myself. I wish I’d had the opportunity to stay for the breakfast — from the other reviews, it sounds like I missed out on some extra deliciousness.
Buddy the sweet St. Bernard is *huge*. Two hundred lbs of slow-​moving mellow :)
I’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

Ditto what everyone else has said. Sarah: Gracious, accommodating, informed, funny. The house: Eclectic, filled with wonderful art and fine craft and pure whimsy. As an artist, I found her style and the décor wonderful, colorful, inspirational and intriguing. The room (we stay in the Master suite) is roomy, private, well-​appointed and comfortable. In fact, I’d say «comfort» is the key theme here. You feel right at home the minute you walk in the door. The very big dogs, Beau and Buddy, are sweet dogs, and very well-​behaved. The breakfast offerings are substantial and good. You can be as private, or as outgoing as you choose. I would rather stay at the Burnt Toast Inn than in any high-​end, luxury hotel you can name.

This was my first experience with a bed and breakfast and I feel confident in saying that I would gladly stay here again. The owner, Sarah, was uncommonly nice and respected our privacy throughout our 2 day stay. Breakfast was delicious (granola, various breads, eggs, fruit salad, etc.) and the atmosphere was cozy. We stayed in the Master’s Suite which had its own private bathroom, which was great. As I said before, I would gladly stay here again without hesitation.

We have stayed at Burnt Toast on a number of occasions and we couldn’t be more pleased with the location, quaint rooms, and laid back feel to the place.
I must reluctantly add, however, that on this summer trip the temps outside were in the upper 80’s and we rented the attic room. If it is 88 degrees outside, you can imagine how hot it was in the closed up attic. 100 degrees? 110? 120?! In my perfect world, Sarah would have at least turned on the window air conditioner for a few minutes before we arrived, since she did know exactly when we were getting there. She also came in the next day and shut it off, so we faced the same suffocating room the next day, too.

Burnt Toast Inn is the ultimate in simple, gracious accomodation. You can’t beat the location– on a beautiful neighborhood street easy walking distance from campus and Zingerman’s. Sarah, the innkeeper, is open and friendly, and has done a beautiful job restoring the old victorian house and filling it with an eclectic assortment of art, artifacts, pottery, and furniture. Sarah’s two dogs, Bo and Buddy, are both loves– and Buddy is seriously one of the biggest dogs I’ve ever seen. I stayed in the gold room, which is small but comfortable and appointed generously with magazines and fluffy robes and slippers.
Not a fancy place, but very comfortable, beautiful, and convenient. I will definitely be back.

I stayed at the Burnt Toast Inn over Thanksgiving weekend. My room had a private bath. It was all lovely.
The four-​post bed was high enough off the ground that a step stool was needed to get to it. It was very comfortable and added warmth was supplied by a fluffy down comforter.
The room is full of charming antiques and filled with amenities from a sewing kit to a bathrobe. There is no TV but you don’t miss it because the room offers so much stimulation yet is totally relaxing.
The private bathroom: 2 pedestal sinks, the deepest bath tub I have ever seen and a separate good sized shower. Plenty of towels are supplied along with soaps and body lotions.
If you forgot something, the room probably already had it to help you out.
There is free wi-​fi. You had better like dogs because the owner has two and one is very large, but I think if you don’t want to engage them, they will leave you alone. Sarah who owns and operates the inn is great for a chat
My room was just so clean and wonderful, I wish I had been able to spend more time in it. I can’t rate the breakfast because I always slept past it.

My wife and I paused in Ann Arbor for her 30^th birthday celebratory breather between stops in E. Lansing and Detroit on our annual holiday treck through Michigan.
We were surprised with the lack of centrally located accommodations in AA and looked beyond hoteliers and into B&Bs. We were certainly delighted that we did.
Burnt Toast Inn is a very well-​kept and charmingly-​managed 4-​bedroom house just on the periphery of downtown that is within walking distance of Main Street and its arteries, which was very important for us, since we were without a vehicle and walking would be our main mode of transit.
From here, we were able to loop the snowy roads towards a very cozy dinner at The Earle, pints at Arbor Brewing, cocktails at Goodnite Gracie, and have back again with a boozy walk through this remarkable neighborhood west of downtown.
Apart from the excellent location, the rate was very reasonable. In this regard, we certainly felt like we got more than what we paid for, even though we were up the next day to eat breakfast at The Fleetwood Diner (again, walking) rather than at the Inn.
We stayed in the purple room, and though a bit smallish, very accommodating, particularly if you can time the visit just right to avoid the chore of sharing the neighboring bathroom with the yellow room. It really IS a nice bathroom. Free Wi-​Fi is also a bonus.
Overall, a first-​rate experience that I would certainly look into again.

We stayed at the Burnt Toast Inn while visiting our daughter and her boyfriend at the University of Michigan. The inn was beautifully decorated, very clean, and comfortable. We made very good use of the WIFI and enjoyed breakfast every morning. It’s very close to Main Street Ann Arbor and about a half mile from the campus.
For us, the best part of our stay was Sarah, the owner, and her two dogs, Bo and Buddy. It seemed like we had known Sarah forever, and we had great fun playing with the dogs. Buddy, the Saint Bernard, had his first birthday while we were there. Bo is older, so he wasn’t as playful, but he was every bit as sweet. Good fun!

Burnt Toast Inn is a great little B&B in the downtown Ann Arbor area. I was at Zingerman’s for a workshop and decided to stay at the Inn – great choice! The price was right and it felt like being at home.
The Inn is perfect for business travelers (wireless internet!!!), romantic weekend getaway, girl’s weekend in Ann Arbor, or even just as a stopover in Ann Arbor.
